Campgrounds near Montara, California
Montara sits on the San Mateo County coast along Highway 1, roughly 25 minutes south of San Francisco and 10 minutes north of Half Moon Bay. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Pacific Coast: bluff trails, tide pools, and working harbors line the corridor, and the highway makes north-south travel straightforward.
RV options cluster south toward Half Moon Bay and north toward Pacifica. Pillar Point RV Park sits beside Pillar Point Harbor, with surf breaks and a working marina at the doorstep. Francis Beach and Campground at Half Moon Bay State Beach hosts tent and RV camping with sites offering electric hookup or dry camping, with no water or sewer hookups but a dump station and water filling station on-site. San Francisco RV Resort and Half Moon Bay RV Park provide full-hookup coastal stays, while Treasure Island MH and RV Park offers a long-term-friendly alternative inside San Francisco Bay. Most sites stay open year-round.
Things to do near Montara
The coastline drives the trip plan. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach has accessible tide pools at low tide, and Montara State Beach offers a wide, walkable shore. The paved Coastside Trail runs for miles between Pillar Point Harbor and the beaches south of town, which makes it useful for bikes, strollers, and easy after-dinner walks. Whale watching, fishing, and surfing are popular activities, but swimming is not recommended due to dangerous rip currents and extremely cold water.
Families often pair beach time with the Half Moon Bay harbor area for boat watching and seafood, the Point Montara Lighthouse for a short photo stop, and day trips north to Pacifica Pier or south to Pescadero. Surf lessons and kayak rentals operate out of Pillar Point Harbor in calmer months.

57° / 46°F 115 mmWettest season; storms and coastal wind common
Summers are short, comfortable, dry, and mostly clear, while winters are long, cool, wet, windy, and partly cloudy. Coastal fog is most persistent in June and July, which keeps daytime highs modest even at the height of summer. Clear, warm weather is most reliable in September and October, when offshore winds push the marine layer back and the ocean is at its warmest point of the year.
Late fall through early spring brings the bulk of the rain, and storms can stack up between November and March. Campsites along Highway 1 stay open through winter, but expect wind, damp nights, and the occasional road closure after heavy rain or slides. Spring is changeable: wildflowers on the bluffs, green hillsides, and rapid swings between sun and squalls. During the peak season from May through October there is a 7-day camping limit at Francis Beach, while from November through April campers may stay up to 15 days.

The RV we rented was a great base camp for the weekend. We would definitely rent it again.
Jonathan S. - Aug 2026
The RV was just as described. It worked out great for us and was nice and clean. The instructional video that came out before we picked it up was great and made using everything on board very easy. A great rental and we will be using it again in the future. The owner was very responsive to any questions we had and was very accommodating with our special requests.

How to book a campsite near Montara
State park sites and private RV parks use different systems, so plan both tracks. Reservations at Half Moon Bay State Beach are highly recommended and can be made as far as 6 months out in advance, online at ReserveCalifornia.com or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. Advance reservations are practically mandatory and popular dates can fill within minutes after becoming available online.
Private parks such as Pillar Point RV Park, San Francisco RV Resort, Half Moon Bay RV Park, and Treasure Island MH and RV Park take direct bookings through their own websites or phone lines, often with shorter lead times but tight summer-weekend availability. All stays at Half Moon Bay State Beach campground require a reservation, and the availability of same-day reservations is extremely limited. Book holiday weekends and Dream Machines or Pumpkin Festival dates as early as the window opens.
What to expect on the coast
Plan for cool, damp air even in summer. Layers, windbreakers, and closed shoes for tide pools are more useful than swimsuits, and overnight lows often drop into the 40s. Daytime winds can be strong, and exposed oceanfront sites get the brunt of it. The majority of campsites at Francis Beach can accommodate recreational vehicles and trailers at a maximum length of 40 feet, but many state-beach loops are tight, so confirm your rig length when booking.
More than half the campground offers electrical hookups, with no water or sewer hookups at the sites, but there is a dump and potable water station, with a dump fee that is card only and not included in the reservation. Dogs are allowed on leash in the campground but are not allowed on the beach.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Montara, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Montara, CA?
Good news: an RV rental in Montara is more affordable than you might expect for the Bay Area coast. On RVezy, most travel trailers start around $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes typically run $175 to $300 per night, and roomy Class A coaches can reach $350 or more. Hosts set their own pricing, so you can filter by budget and even sort for a cheap RV rental in Montara that still has great reviews. For the best deals, book midweek, travel in the shoulder months of April, May, or September, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: paying for delivery to a nearby campground like Half Moon Bay State Beach often costs less than the fuel and mileage you would burn driving a Class A down narrow Highway 1 yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montara%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Montara, California?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Montara, even for a 30-foot Class C motorhome. California does not require a special RV license or commercial driver's license for non-commercial recreational vehicles under 40 feet. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified inside the platform during booking so there is no paperwork to chase down. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home country's auto association before you fly into SFO, just 20 minutes from Montara, and you are ready to roll up Highway 1.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs the RV protected if something goes wrong on my Montara trip?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Montara includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 1 with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose your level of coverage rather than the host choosing for you, and the plan covers most damage to the RV up to the plan limits. Combined with roadside help just a phone call away, the protection plan removes the biggest worry about your first Montara RV trip, whether that is a rock chip near the Devil's Slide tunnels or a minor bump backing into your campsite. You can review what each tier includes on the RVezy renter protection page before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Montara RV rental?
Booking an RV rental in Montara is lower-risk than you might think. RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and there is a short grace period right after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. After that window, the refund depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. Because the policy is platform-wide, you will not see a separate cancellation policy on each listing. If your host has to cancel, RVezy refunds you in full or helps you rebook. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Montara coast rigs, knowing the policy is consistent and transparent.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Montara RV rental?
Absolutely, Montara is one of the most dog-loving stretches of the California coast, and pet-friendly RV rentals in Montara are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see rigs whose hosts welcome dogs, sometimes with a small cleaning fee. Once you arrive, your pup is welcome on-leash (6-foot maximum) at Montara State Beach, and just south at Surfer's Beach in El Granada and Poplar Beach in Half Moon Bay, dogs can run off-leash on the sand. Pillar Point Bluff trails are also leashed-dog friendly. Pro tip: bring a towel for sandy paws and a freshwater jug, since Montara State Beach has no drinking water on-site.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=531Can the RV be delivered to my campground or rental home in Montara?
Yes, and RV delivery in Montara is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters who don't want to drive a big rig down twisty Highway 1. Many RVezy hosts offer delivery and full setup, meaning they'll bring the motorhome or trailer to Francis Beach at Half Moon Bay State Beach, Pillar Point RV Park, or even a private driveway in Moss Beach or Montara, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Just use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host to confirm your campsite. Pro tip: delivery is especially handy if you're flying into SFO, only about 13 miles away, and don't want to drive a rental car at all.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=531How many miles can I drive on a Montara RV rental?
You have plenty of room to roam. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and on the Montara coast it's common to see 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some hosts offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold if you're planning a longer road trip from Montara. For reference, San Francisco is about 22 miles north, Santa Cruz is 55 miles south, Monterey is 90 miles, Yosemite is roughly 200 miles east, and Big Sur is around 140 miles down Highway 1. Pro tip: filter for unlimited mileage listings if you're chasing the full Pacific Coast Highway experience, then message the host with your route so they can recommend the right rig.
dot.ca.gov/travelWhere can I park or camp my RV near Montara?
You're spoiled for choice on where to park an RV in Montara. The closest full-service options are Pillar Point RV Park in Half Moon Bay (about 6 miles south, with ocean-view sites), Francis Beach Campground at Half Moon Bay State Beach (tent and RV sites with direct beach access), San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica (oceanfront bluff sites just 10 miles north), and Costanoa KOA in Pescadero (about 30 minutes south with full hookups and a lodge). Note that Montara State Beach itself is day-use only, no overnight RV parking. Pro tip: reserve Francis Beach 6 months in advance through ReserveCalifornia for summer weekends, they book out fast.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=531When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Montara?
Surprise: the best time for RV camping in Montara is actually September and October, not summer. Coastal Montara has a famous marine layer that blankets the coast in fog from June through August, with daytime highs hovering in the upper 50s to mid 60s Fahrenheit. Once September arrives, the fog burns off, skies turn brilliant blue, and temperatures climb into the 65 to 72 degree sweet spot. April and May bring wildflowers across McNee Ranch and the bluffs, while November through April is prime gray whale watching from Montara State Beach. Pro tip: pack layers year-round, evenings on the coast often drop into the 40s even in July.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never driven an RV before. Is Montara a good place for first-timers?
Montara is actually a great launchpad for first time renting an RV, as long as you pick the right vehicle. Skip the 35-foot Class A and start with a campervan rental in Montara (Class B) or a 21 to 25 foot Class C motorhome, both easy to handle on Highway 1's curves. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and dumping, so you'll never feel left alone. If even that feels like a lot, book a host who offers delivery and they'll set everything up at your campsite. Pro tip: avoid driving through downtown San Francisco, take I-280 around the city to reach Highway 1 at Pacifica.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What if I break down or have an emergency during my Montara trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Just call the roadside number in your RVezy confirmation from anywhere along your route, whether you are parked at Montara State Beach, climbing Highway 92 toward Half Moon Bay, or down at Pigeon Point Lighthouse. Your host is also reachable through in-app messaging and knows their RV's quirks better than anyone. Pro tip: cell coverage can drop along stretches of Highway 1 between Montara and Pescadero, so screenshot your reservation details and the roadside number before heading out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Montara?
An RV road trip from Montara puts some of California's most iconic scenery within easy reach. Head south down Highway 1 for the classic Pacific Coast Highway run: Half Moon Bay (10 minutes), Pescadero and Pigeon Point Lighthouse (45 minutes), Santa Cruz (about 1.5 hours), Monterey and Carmel (2 hours), and Big Sur (3 hours). North leads to San Francisco (35 minutes), Muir Woods (1 hour), and Point Reyes National Seashore (1.5 hours). Inland, Yosemite National Park is about 4 hours east. Cross-border trips into Mexico are not allowed on RVezy rentals, but you can drive your Montara RV anywhere in the US and Canada if your host agrees, just message them first.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/road-informationHow much will I spend on fuel for my Montara RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but it's manageable with a little planning. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A coaches run 7 to 10 MPG. California gas prices are typically the highest in the country, hovering around $4.75 to $5.25 per gallon along the San Mateo coast. Cheapest fuel near Montara is usually in Pacifica or at the Costco in South San Francisco, about 15 minutes north. For a 3-night trip with 200 miles of driving in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up before leaving Pacifica, prices on Highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay climb noticeably.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/gasoline-pricesHow far in advance should I book a campground near Montara?
Book early, the best campgrounds near Montara fill faster than the RVs themselves. California State Parks like Half Moon Bay State Beach (Francis, Venice, Dunes, and Sweetwood loops) open reservations exactly 6 months in advance through ReserveCalifornia, and summer weekends sell out within minutes of release. Private parks like Pillar Point RV Park and San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica typically book 2 to 3 months out for peak season. Costanoa KOA in Pescadero is more flexible but still wise to grab early. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the 8 a.m. Pacific release time on ReserveCalifornia exactly 6 months before your target Saturday night, and have your account logged in and ready.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Montara?
Highway 1 around Montara is gorgeous and totally drivable in an RV, with a couple of things to know. The Tom Lantos Tunnels at Devil's Slide just north of Montara are well-lit, two-lane, and clear 15-foot, 6-inch height limits, so any standard RV fits easily. South of Montara, Highway 1 has gentle curves and ocean views all the way to Half Moon Bay. Watch for afternoon coastal winds gusting 20 to 30 mph, summer fog that can drop visibility quickly, and slow pullouts for sightseers. Avoid downtown San Francisco entirely if your rig is over 20 feet, hills and trolley wires make it stressful. Pro tip: drive Highway 1 during morning hours when fog is lighter and traffic thinner.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Montara?
You'll find a great range of campground amenities along the Montara coast. Pillar Point RV Park offers full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and ocean views. Francis Beach at Half Moon Bay State Beach has cold-water taps, restrooms with hot showers, and a dump station, but no individual hookups, so plan to use your RV's onboard tanks. San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica has full hookups, a pool, and clubhouse. For fresh water and dumping between stops, Costanoa KOA in Pescadero allows non-guests to dump for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before you arrive at any state park campground, the spigots can be a long hose-stretch from your site.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=531What's included inside a typical RV rental in Montara?
A motorhome rental in Montara on RVezy comes ready for a comfortable coastal trip. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower (in Class B, C, and larger); sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on layout; heating, air conditioning, and propane; and DOT-compliant seatbelts for travel. Many hosts also include a generator, outdoor awning, leveling blocks, sewer hose, and a stocked kitchen kit. Wi-Fi and TV vary by listing, so check the amenities section, cellular hotspots work well in Montara itself but get patchy south toward Pescadero. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm bedding and linens, some include them free and others offer them as an add-on.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Most Montara hosts offer helpful add-ons that make your trip smoother. Common options include delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile from the host's home base), generator use (sometimes a flat daily fee), bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor tables, bike racks, paddleboards, and pet cleaning fees for furry guests. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Montara, Moss Beach, Half Moon Bay, or Pacifica, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough included. Mileage is set per-listing, with common ranges of 100 to 150 free miles per night and unlimited options available. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a kitchen kit if you're flying in, you can land at SFO and be relaxing oceanside in Montara within 90 minutes.
flysfo.com/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you rent an RV in Montara through RVezy, you pay your booking online by credit card through the platform, never directly to the host, so the transaction is protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment shortly before your trip starts; amounts are set per listing and commonly range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value. As long as you return the rig in the agreed condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the deposit is released back to your card after the trip ends. Pro tip: take a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, it is the easiest way to avoid any back-and-forth on the deposit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAny local insider tips for a family RV trip in Montara?
Here is the local secret: skip the crowds at Half Moon Bay and base your family RV trip in Montara near the Point Montara Lighthouse, one of the few working lighthouses on the West Coast that doubles as a Hostelling International site. From there, you are a short walk to Montara State Beach for tide pooling at low tide, a 5-minute drive to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach for tide pools and harbor seals, and about 15 minutes to the Mavericks viewpoint at Pillar Point Harbor where huge winter waves draw world-class surfers. Grab fresh Dungeness crab at Pillar Point Harbor on the way back. Pro tip: visit Fitzgerald Marine Reserve within 1.5 hours of low tide for the best viewing, and check NOAA tide charts before you go.
