RV camping near Moss Beach
Moss Beach sits on the San Mateo County coast between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, with the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve as its centerpiece. Moss Beach is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of San Francisco and 50 miles (80 km) north of Santa Cruz. RV travelers use the town as a quiet base for exploring the coast while staying within reach of San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The closest hookup options cluster a few miles south around Pillar Point Harbor and the city of Half Moon Bay.
Pillar Point RV Park sits directly across from the Pacific and offers full hookups including electric, water and sewer, with ocean-view and partial-view sites. Half Moon Bay RV Park and Pelican Point RV Park provide additional full-hookup options near the harbor and golf links. For travelers who want a beachfront state park experience, Francis Beach and Campground at Half Moon Bay State Beach offers ocean-view sites with some electric hookups but no water or sewer. Farther north toward the city, San Francisco RV Resort gives full-hookup access for trips that combine coast and urban sightseeing.
Things to do near Moss Beach
Tidepooling is the signature activity. Established in 1969 to protect the area's rich marine habitat, the reserve is the most visited of all San Mateo County parks, with bluff-top trails through a century-old Cypress grove and tide pools as the main attraction. The reserve is home to a colorful variety of marine life including sea urchins, anemones, sponges, hermit crabs and sea stars, best viewed at minus low tides.
Beyond tidepools, the paved Coastside Trail runs along the bluffs for biking and walking. Pillar Point Harbor draws surfers to the Mavericks break, and fishing charters head out year-round. Half Moon Bay State Beach has several sandy beaches for picnicking and beachcombing. Whale watching peaks in winter and spring, and the historic Moss Beach Distillery sits a short walk from the reserve.

The coast operates on two distinct seasons. Summer and early fall bring the driest, sunniest weather, but the coast is famous for cool marine fog that can hold all day, especially in June and July. Temperatures are highest on average in September, around 16.7°C, and demand for campsites peaks then alongside the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival in mid-October.
Winter is the wet season. December averages 144 mm of precipitation over 14 rainy days, with February close behind. Storms can bring strong onshore winds, and exposed beachfront sites get gusty even on calm days. Winter is also prime time for gray whale migration and for the largest king tides, which expose deeper reaches of the tidepools.
Spring shoulder months balance lower rainfall with cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Stay limits at Francis Beach are 7 consecutive nights May 1 through October 31, and 15 nights November 1 through April 30, so trip planners should match length of stay to the calendar.

The RV we rented was a great base camp for the weekend. We would definitely rent it again.

The RV was just as described. It worked out great for us and was nice and clean. The instructional video that came out before we picked it up was great and made using everything on board very easy. A great rental and we will be using it again in the future. The owner was very responsive to any questions we had and was very accommodating with our special requests.

How to book a campsite
Francis Beach campsite reservations must be made through ReserveCalifornia by calling 1-800-444-PARK (7275) or through reservecalifornia.com. Reservations must be made 48 hours in advance and can be made as far out as six months in advance. The campground is extremely popular and oceanfront sites can fill within minutes of release, so set up a ReserveCalifornia account before the booking window opens and search under Half Moon Bay SB.
The private RV parks operate differently. Pillar Point RV Park has historically been first-come, first-served, though policies can change, so contact the park directly through its website at pillarpointrvpark.com to confirm availability. Half Moon Bay RV Park, Pelican Point RV Park and San Francisco RV Resort accept advance bookings directly through their websites or by phone, and weekends fill quickly in summer.
What to expect on arrival
Expect cool, breezy conditions even in summer. Coastal fog frequently rolls in by afternoon, and temperatures drop noticeably after sunset. Layered clothing and a wind shell are practical year-round. Swimming is not recommended due to dangerous rip currents and very cold water, so plan beach time around walking, tidepooling and beachcombing.
Hookup expectations vary by campground. At Francis Beach, sites offer electric hookup or dry camping, with no water or sewer hookups, but there is a dump station and a water filling station. The majority of the campsites can accommodate recreational vehicles and trailers at a maximum length of 40 feet. Cell service is generally solid along Highway 1. On-leash dogs are allowed on the lower Dardenelle Trail along the eastern edge of the Cypress grove, but are not allowed on the beach or on the upper bluff trail, so check pet rules before heading out.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Moss Beach, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Moss Beach, CA?
An RV rental in Moss Beach typically runs about $125 to $225 per night for travel trailers and campervans, while larger Class A and Class C motorhomes range from roughly $250 to $400 per night in peak summer. Midweek bookings from Tuesday to Thursday often shave 15-25% off weekend rates, and shoulder months like late September through early November tend to offer the best value. For a cheap RV rental in Moss Beach, filter for Instant Book listings and consider hosts in nearby Pacifica, Montara, El Granada, or Half Moon Bay to maximize coastal value.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Moss%20Beach%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Moss Beach, California?
Good news: a regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Moss Beach, even for big Class A motorhomes up to 40 feet. California does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement for personal recreational vehicles under 40 feet and under 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. You must be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and ID verification happens right inside the platform when you book. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-timers are surprised how quickly they go from booking to cruising Highway 1.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/driver-license-and-identification-id-card-information-ffdl-05/Is insurance and roadside assistance included with my Moss Beach RV rental?
Yes. Every RV rental in Moss Beach booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 1 with real peace of mind. At checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and the plan covers a range of accidental damage to the vehicle while it is in your care. Roadside assistance helps with flat tires, lockouts, jumpstarts, battery issues, and towing, which is reassuring along the foggy Devil's Slide stretch between Pacifica and Montara. Book, pack, and go.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Moss Beach RV trip?
You can book your RV rental in Moss Beach with confidence because RVezy sets a standard cancellation policy across the platform rather than leaving it to individual hosts. Depending on how far in advance you cancel, you may be eligible for a full or partial refund, and additional protections apply for qualifying situations. If a host cancels your booking, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund or travel credit. Review the current cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before booking so you know exactly how your dates are protected.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Moss Beach RV rental?
Yes, and the San Mateo coast is a great place to travel with a dog. Many pet-friendly RV rentals in Moss Beach are available on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching. Once you arrive, your pup will love the leashed Coastside Trail that runs along the bluffs through Half Moon Bay, plus Pillar Point Bluff and nearby Montara State Beach. Dogs are not permitted on the sand at Half Moon Bay State Beach but are welcome on the adjacent trail. Pack a towel and a windbreaker, the marine layer keeps things cool and damp.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=531Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Moss Beach?
Yes, RV delivery in Moss Beach is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving Highway 1's curves around Devil's Slide. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to Half Moon Bay State Beach Campground at Francis Beach, Pillar Point RV Park, or Half Moon Bay RV Park, then handle setup, leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough. Delivery fees are set by each host and are commonly charged as a flat rate or per mile. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campsite number to confirm.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Moss%20Beach%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive on a Moss Beach RV rental and what about mileage limits?
You have plenty of road to play with. Hosts in Moss Beach set their own mileage policies, and many offer between 100 and 150 free miles per night, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for a small premium. From Moss Beach you can reach Santa Cruz in about 55 miles south on Highway 1, Big Sur in roughly 140 miles, Napa wine country in about 80 miles, Yosemite Valley in around 200 miles, and Lake Tahoe in about 230 miles. A classic Moss Beach RV trip is the coastal loop from Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz to Monterey and back, roughly 200 miles round trip. Message hosts directly to confirm mileage for longer routes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106394-How-to-pay-for-your-bookingWhere are the best campgrounds near Moss Beach for an RV?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Moss Beach include Half Moon Bay State Beach Campground at Francis Beach (around 50 sites, dump station, about four miles south), Pillar Point RV Park in El Granada (full hookups, walking distance to the harbor), Half Moon Bay RV Park on the bluffs, and San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica perched above the ocean. For redwoods, Memorial County Park near Loma Mar is about 30 minutes inland. Francis Beach books up fast for summer weekends, so reserve through ReserveCalifornia.com when your six-month window opens at 8 a.m. Pacific. Confirm current nightly rates on ReserveCalifornia at the time of booking.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Moss Beach?
On the San Mateo coast, September and October are often the warmest and sunniest months, not midsummer. Coastal fog is common from June through August, with daytime highs in the low 60s F and gray skies until afternoon. Late April to early June and September through mid-November typically bring milder, clearer days in the mid 60s to low 70s F and fewer crowds at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and Pillar Point. Winter from December to March is mild but rainy, great for storm-watching from a cozy motorhome. For the ultimate Moss Beach RV trip, target mid to late September, and pair it with the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival in October.
weather.gov/mtr/I have never driven an RV. Will I be okay on Highway 1 near Moss Beach?
You will do great, and you are far from alone, most Moss Beach renters are first-timers. Every RVezy host provides a full pickup walkthrough covering driving, leveling, propane, slides, and dump procedures, and you can text them during your trip with questions. If you are nervous about Highway 1's curves at Devil's Slide or the tight section through Pacifica, pick a Class B campervan or a 20-25 foot Class C motorhome, both drive almost like a tall SUV. First time renting an RV? Choose a host offering delivery to your campground so your first time behind the wheel is on your way home. Take it slow, use pullouts, and enjoy the view.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/route-informationWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every Moss Beach RV rental booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and many mechanical breakdowns are one phone call away. Cell service is generally solid along Highway 1 between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, with only short dead zones near the Tom Lantos Tunnels. Your host is a direct message away for quick fixes like resetting the inverter or restarting the water pump, and RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after the trip. Save both numbers at pickup and you can relax.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Moss Beach RV rental into Oregon, Nevada, or across the border?
Interstate travel within the United States is generally welcome, but cross-border travel is restricted. Most Moss Beach hosts allow trips into Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and beyond, since RVezy protection coverage applies across the U.S. A classic RV road trip from Moss Beach heads north on Highway 1 and 101 toward Mendocino and the Oregon coast, or east via I-80 to Reno and Lake Tahoe. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Trips into Canada may be possible with advance host approval. Always message the host before booking to confirm your route and any extra mileage allowances.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on a Moss Beach RV trip?
Plan smart and fuel becomes a small slice of your budget. California gas prices in the Bay Area typically run $4.80 to $5.50 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. Class B campervans average 18-22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 10-14 mpg, and Class A rigs 7-10 mpg. For a 3-night Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz to Monterey loop (about 200 miles) in a Class C, budget roughly $75-100 in fuel. Fill up in Half Moon Bay or Pacifica before heading south, prices climb noticeably once you pass Pescadero and there are no stations between San Gregorio and Davenport. The Costco in South San Francisco off Highway 101 has the cheapest fuel in the area.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Moss Beach?
For peak summer and holiday weekends, book the moment your window opens, six months in advance to the day. California State Parks releases Half Moon Bay State Beach (Francis Beach) reservations on a rolling daily basis through ReserveCalifornia.com at 8:00 a.m. Pacific, exactly six months out, and ocean-view sites disappear within minutes. For midweek stays in May, September, or October, you can often find availability 2-4 weeks ahead. Private parks like Pillar Point RV Park and Half Moon Bay RV Park book 2-3 months ahead for summer weekends. Pro tip: if Francis Beach is full, call the kiosk at (650) 726-8820 at 2 p.m. for same-day cancellations.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like on Highway 1 around Moss Beach?
Conditions are scenic and very manageable when you know what to expect. Highway 1 through Moss Beach is two lanes with a 45-55 mph limit, gentle curves, and ocean cliffs on the west side. The Tom Lantos Tunnels at Devil's Slide between Pacifica and Montara are wide and easy, with shoulders for slower RVs. Morning fog is common until 10-11 a.m., so plan departures for late morning when visibility opens up. Winter storms occasionally cause rockslides between Montara and Half Moon Bay, so check Caltrans QuickMap before driving. Avoid driving in and out of San Francisco during weekday rush hours (7-9 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.). Use Highway 92 east to reach I-280 and skip city traffic.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Moss Beach?
Coastal campgrounds vary in what they offer, so match the site to your RV. Half Moon Bay State Beach's Francis Beach has 40+ sites with 30-amp electric, plus a potable water fill station and a dump station ($10 fee, card only), but no individual water or sewer hookups. Pillar Point RV Park, Half Moon Bay RV Park, and San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica all offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric) plus Wi-Fi and laundry. Quarter-operated hot showers are at Francis Beach, free showers at the private parks. For dump stations along Highway 1, the closest public option besides Francis Beach is Pelican Point RV Park in Pacifica. Always top off water before heading south past Pescadero.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=531What features and equipment come with a Moss Beach RV rental?
Modern Moss Beach RV rentals come fully equipped for coastal camping right out of the gate. Expect a queen or king bed, full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, hot-water bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette that converts to extra sleeping, air conditioning, propane furnace (essential for chilly foggy nights at 50 F), and seatbelted seating for travel. Most listings include a TV, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots, solar panels, or onboard generators. Campervan rental Moss Beach options typically sleep 2-4, while motorhome rental Moss Beach Class C units sleep 4-7. Check the listing photos for outdoor showers, perfect for rinsing off after tide-pooling at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=523What add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Moss Beach?
Hosts in Moss Beach offer a wide menu of add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include linen and towel packages, camp chairs and outdoor tables, kitchen kits with pots and dishes, generators if not built in, bike racks, kayak racks, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Moss Beach, El Granada, Half Moon Bay, Pacifica, or Montara, with a 30-60 minute walkthrough that covers driving, hookups, and systems. Many hosts also offer delivery to local campgrounds for a per-mile or flat fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, and some offer unlimited mileage. Message the host before booking to bundle add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Moss%20Beach%2C%20CaliforniaHow does the security deposit and payment work for an RV rental in Moss Beach?
Payment is simple and fully online, no cash exchanges with hosts. When you book your RV rental in Moss Beach, RVezy processes the rental amount through the platform using an accepted credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment and the amount varies by listing and RV class. As long as you return the RV on time, undamaged, with tanks handled per host instructions, and within the agreed mileage, the hold is released after the trip. To avoid surprises, take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, confirm fuel expectations, and review the listing's mileage and generator policies.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I park my RV overnight in Moss Beach if I am not at a campground?
Plan to use established campgrounds, because overnight RV parking is restricted along most of the San Mateo coast. The City of Half Moon Bay and surrounding unincorporated communities including Moss Beach, El Granada, and Montara prohibit overnight parking on most public streets and coastal pullouts, with enforcement common in summer. The good news: where to park an RV in Moss Beach is easy once you book a local option like Pillar Point RV Park, Half Moon Bay RV Park, Half Moon Bay State Beach Francis Beach campground, or San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica. If you would like to overnight at a business or winery, call ahead to confirm permission.
