Campgrounds near Mount Hermon, California
Mount Hermon sits in the Santa Cruz Mountains in Santa Cruz County, a small community along Highway 9 between Felton and Scotts Valley. The area is surrounded by redwood forest and the San Lorenzo River corridor, putting RV travelers within a short drive of both old-growth redwoods and the Santa Cruz coast. Most RV options are clustered around Felton on Highway 9, with private parks offering full hookups and a state-park campground offering a more traditional forest stay.
Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, Cotillion Gardens RV Park, and Smithwoods RV Park are private parks along the San Lorenzo River with hookup sites suitable for larger rigs. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground adds a forested public option backed by hiking trails and the park's famous Redwood Grove. Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort, slightly inland near Scotts Valley, gives easier highway access for travelers continuing toward the Bay Area. Santa Cruz, the Boardwalk, and Monterey Bay beaches are all within a short drive.
Things to do near Mount Hermon
Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is the central draw, with the Redwood Grove Loop Trail leading through ancient trees and around twenty miles of hiking and riding trails, including a route up to an observation deck at 805 feet with views over the forest canopy. The San Lorenzo River offers summer swimming holes and light fishing, with the Garden of Eden swimming hole a popular stop. Roaring Camp Railroad in Felton runs steam-train excursions through the redwoods and down to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. The Boardwalk itself, Natural Bridges State Beach, the Mystery Spot, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium are all within roughly a thirty-minute drive. Mountain biking, road cycling on Highway 9, and tide-pooling at nearby state beaches round out the typical itinerary for families based in Mount Hermon.

The Santa Cruz Mountains have a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and wet winters, so the camping calendar is shaped less by temperature than by rain and reservation pressure. Late spring through early fall is the prime window: days are mild, rain is rare, and the forest canopy keeps sites cool even on warmer afternoons. Coastal fog can push inland on summer mornings, then burn off by midday.
Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground and the private Felton parks fill quickly on weekends and holidays. September and October are quieter, with warm days, low rainfall, and easier site selection. Winter brings the bulk of the area's roughly twenty-five to thirty-five inches of annual rain, concentrated from December through March, along with occasional road closures on Highway 9 after major storms. Henry Cowell can close or relocate visitors during severe weather, so always verify current status before booking.

How to book campgrounds near Mount Hermon
Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground is reserved through ReserveCalifornia, online or by phone, on a rolling window that opens six months ahead of the arrival date at 8 a.m. Pacific. Summer weekends and holidays often sell out the moment the window opens, so set a target date and book at opening time. Maximum trailer length is around thirty-one feet and motorhome length around thirty-five feet, and sites have no hookups.
Private parks including Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, Cotillion Gardens RV Park, Smithwoods RV Park, and Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and several also list on third-party booking platforms. Big rigs and pull-through sites are limited, so call ahead to confirm length, slide-out clearance, and amperage. Cancellations at the state park incur a fee, and late cancellations are charged the first night's stay.
What to expect when camping near Mount Hermon
The Henry Cowell campground sits in a shady pine and oak forest, while the private Felton parks are tucked under tall redwoods along the San Lorenzo River, which means deep shade, cool nights even in midsummer, and limited solar charging. Cell coverage is patchy along Highway 9 and inside the state park; some private parks offer Wi-Fi, though service is not guaranteed. Highway 9 north of Santa Cruz is narrow and winding, and operators routinely advise larger RVs and trailers to approach from the Scotts Valley side rather than driving up from the coast.
Expect standard state-park amenities at Henry Cowell, including flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and food-storage lockers, with no hookups on site. The nearest state-park dump and water-fill station is at New Brighton State Beach. Private parks typically add full hookups with thirty and fifty-amp service, laundry, and a dump station. Raccoons and ravens are persistent, so store food and trash properly.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Mount Hermon, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Mount Hermon, California?
RV rental in Mount Hermon is often more affordable than booking Santa Cruz hotels in peak season. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Santa Cruz Mountains typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run $150 to $225, and larger Class C motorhomes range from $200 to $300 per night. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can find better rates midweek and in shoulder months like March and November. For a cheaper RV rental in Mount Hermon, book Sunday through Thursday and filter for travel trailers if you already have a tow vehicle, or choose a delivered unit so mileage stays low. Mount Hermon sits about 7 miles from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, so even a short stay packs in a lot of fun.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mount%20Hermon%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Mount Hermon?
A standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mount Hermon, California. The California DMV does not require a special endorsement or commercial license for motorhomes or travel trailers under 40 feet, so your regular Class C license covers everything from a campervan to a family-sized Class C motorhome on RVezy. Renters generally need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license along with an International Driving Permit. Your host will walk you through the rig at pickup so you feel confident before heading out toward the redwoods.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs the RV protected if something happens during my trip?
Yes. Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive Highway 17 toward Mount Hermon with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your rental, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. Whether you're navigating winding Graham Hill Road or parked under the redwoods at Henry Cowell, you're backed up if the unexpected happens. Review the coverage tiers before booking so you can pick the option that matches your route and comfort level.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Mount Hermon RV rental?
Booking an RV rental in Mount Hermon is lower risk than you might expect because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy across every listing. There's a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and additional protections apply for qualifying situations, which matters in a region that occasionally sees winter storms or wildfire-related road closures along Highway 9. Because refund amounts depend on how far ahead of your trip you cancel, review the specifics on the RVezy site or in your booking confirmation before you commit. The takeaway: you can lock in that perfect redwood getaway now without feeling stuck if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Mount Hermon RV trip?
Yes, and the Santa Cruz Mountains are one of California's most dog-friendly regions. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Mount Hermon, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of hosts who welcome dogs (some charge a small pet cleaning fee, shown upfront). Once you're on the road, take your pup to off-leash hours at Its Beach in Santa Cruz, the dog-friendly Pogonip Open Space trails, or the paved Monterey Bay Coastal Trail. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park allows leashed dogs in the campground and on fire roads, but not on the main redwood loop trail. Message your host before booking to confirm pet details and ask for an easy-to-clean rig.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=546Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Mount Hermon?
Yes, RV delivery in Mount Hermon is one of the most popular options on RVezy and a great choice if you're new to RVing or don't want to drive a big rig through the redwood-lined curves of Graham Hill Road. Many local hosts will deliver to nearby campgrounds like Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort in Felton, or Smithwoods RV Park, set up the RV at your site, connect water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. To find delivery-ready listings, use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your campground name to confirm the fee. It's the easiest way to have a stress-free Mount Hermon RV trip without towing a thing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mount%20Hermon%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I travel on an RV road trip from Mount Hermon?
From Mount Hermon, you're well positioned for some of California's most iconic road trips, and many RVezy hosts offer generous mileage allowances or unlimited mileage packages. Big Sur is about 75 miles south down Highway 1 (around 2 hours), Yosemite Valley is roughly 200 miles east (4.5 hours), Pinnacles National Park is about 90 miles south (under 2 hours), and the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt County is about 290 miles north (5.5 hours). Mileage policies vary by host, often 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.45 each, so for longer routes filter for an RV rental with unlimited mileage. Message the host with your full itinerary before booking so they can set you up with the right package.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/driving.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Mount Hermon for an RV?

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park (about 2 miles away) offers shaded sites with potable water and a dump station, suitable for RVs up to 35 feet (sites are dry, no hookups). Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort in Felton sits along the San Lorenzo River with full hookups. Smithwoods RV Park, also in Felton, is a longtime favorite with water and electric. Cotillion Gardens RV Park in Felton has full hookups including sewer, and New Brighton State Beach in Capitola (about 10 miles south) puts you right above the ocean. Book early through ReserveCalifornia for state parks, especially May through September.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time of year to visit Mount Hermon in an RV?
Mount Hermon is enjoyable nearly year-round thanks to its mild Santa Cruz Mountains microclimate, but the sweet spot is April through October when daytime highs sit in a comfortable 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and rain is rare. Summer (June to August) is peak family season with warm days perfect for tubing the San Lorenzo River and beach trips to Santa Cruz, though campgrounds fill fast. Fall (September to early November) offers warm days, cool redwood nights, and quieter trails. Winter brings redwood mist and significant rainfall, with nighttime lows occasionally dipping below 40, but RV camping in Mount Hermon is cozy when you've got a warm rig. Spring brings wildflowers and rushing creeks.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Mount Hermon?
You've got this, and Mount Hermon is a great first-time RV rental destination. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, and how everything works before you leave. Local roads like Graham Hill Road and Mount Hermon Road are paved, two-lane, and manageable in anything up to a 28-foot Class C. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup, which is very common in this area. Avoid the steep, narrow stretches of Highway 9 north of Boulder Creek in larger rigs and stick to Highway 17 or Highway 1 for cross-county travel. Bonus: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking, so help is one call away.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 17, a dead battery at Henry Cowell, or a propane issue at a campsite in Felton, help is a phone call away. Roadside support covers things like towing, tire changes, jumpstarts, and lockouts. Your host is also typically reachable by message for quick troubleshooting, since they know their rig best, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. That way you can focus on enjoying the redwoods, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Mount Hermon RV rental into Oregon, Nevada, or Mexico?
Interstate trips are very doable. From Mount Hermon, popular cross-state routes include heading north on US-101 into Oregon (about 500 miles to Crater Lake National Park) or east on I-80 to Lake Tahoe and Nevada (roughly 240 miles). Most RVezy hosts allow travel across U.S. state lines, but message the host before booking with your route so they can confirm and adjust mileage if needed. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend across that border. Stick to the U.S. and you've got nearly endless options, from the Pacific Northwest coast to the Sierra Nevada. An RV road trip from Mount Hermon up Highway 1 to Mendocino is one of the most scenic short routes in the country.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat about fuel costs and MPG for a Mount Hermon RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is easier when you know the numbers. California gas prices are among the highest in the country, typically running $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon in the Santa Cruz area, with diesel usually slightly higher. Class B campervans get the best mileage (around 18 to 22 MPG), Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, and Class A motorhomes typically come in at 7 to 10 MPG. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop from Mount Hermon to Big Sur and back in a Class C, expect to spend roughly $80 to $110 on fuel. Fill up in Watsonville or Salinas where prices tend to be a bit lower than in Santa Cruz proper, and use apps like GasBuddy to find the best stops along Highway 1.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far ahead should I book campgrounds near Mount Hermon?
For the best campgrounds near Mount Hermon, book as early as you can, especially for summer weekends. California State Parks like Henry Cowell Redwoods and Big Basin Redwoods open reservations on ReserveCalifornia exactly six months in advance to the day, and popular sites can sell out within minutes for July and August. Private parks like Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, Smithwoods RV Park, and Cotillion Gardens take direct bookings and typically need 2 to 4 weeks of lead time for weekends. For a last-minute Mount Hermon RV trip, midweek availability is usually solid even in summer, and shoulder seasons like late September are wide open. Pro tip: set a calendar alert at 8 a.m. exactly six months before your target date for state park sites.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Mount Hermon?
Driving around Mount Hermon is generally easygoing once you know a few local quirks. Highway 17 between Santa Cruz and San Jose is the main artery and has tight curves and steady traffic, so plan to drive it outside of weekday rush hours (avoid 7 to 9 a.m. southbound and 4 to 7 p.m. northbound). Mount Hermon Road, Graham Hill Road, and Highway 9 through Felton and Ben Lomond are paved and RV-friendly up to about 30 feet, but Highway 9 narrows north of Boulder Creek. Watch for low-hanging redwood branches at older campgrounds, dense morning fog in summer, and slick roads during winter rain. Coastal Highway 1 south to Monterey is stunning and very RV-friendly. Bookmark Caltrans QuickMap for real-time road and weather updates before you head out.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Mount Hermon?
Campground amenities in the Mount Hermon area range from rustic state park sites to full-hookup resorts, so you can pick what fits your trip. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park offers potable water spigots, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, though sites are dry (no hookups). Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort and Cotillion Gardens in Felton offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer) plus Wi-Fi and laundry. Smithwoods RV Park has water and electric. For dumping and water fills between campgrounds, the Henry Cowell dump station is open to non-campers for a small fee. Cell service in the redwoods can be spotty, so download maps offline. Ask your host about onboard fresh water and gray tank capacity if you're planning to dry camp at a state park.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=546What's inside a typical RV rental in Mount Hermon?
Most RVs on RVezy in the Mount Hermon area come fully equipped so you can pull up and start enjoying the redwoods. Expect real beds (queen or full), a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, a dining table that converts to extra sleeping space, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for travel. Class C motorhome rentals in Mount Hermon usually sleep 4 to 7, while a campervan rental in Mount Hermon is cozier and great for couples. Many also include a TV, onboard generator or solar, USB charging, and outdoor camp chairs. Wi-Fi hotspots are sometimes available as an add-on, helpful given spotty cell service in the redwoods. Each listing shows exactly what's included, with photos.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mount%20Hermon%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons can I get with my RV rental, and how does pickup work?
RVezy hosts in Mount Hermon offer a great mix of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common ones include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with dishes and utensils, camp chairs and outdoor tables, propane refills, generator hours, bike racks, portable Wi-Fi hotspots, and pet packages. Many hosts also offer delivery to local campgrounds with a per-mile fee, which is the easiest pickup option around. If you're picking up in person, plan for a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough at the host's location, usually somewhere in Santa Cruz, Felton, Scotts Valley, or Ben Lomond. Mileage policies vary by host (often 100 to 150 free miles per night), so for longer trips look for unlimited-mileage listings. Book add-ons when you reserve the rig, since popular items can run out on busy weekends.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mount%20Hermon%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure, with no cash exchange at pickup. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, and your total includes the nightly rate, host fees, RVezy service fee, taxes, and your chosen protection plan. A refundable security deposit is also placed on hold (not charged) before your trip, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV and host. As long as you return the rig in the same condition (full propane, clean, no damage), the hold is released after your trip. Take a quick video walkaround of the RV at both pickup and drop-off in Mount Hermon, document the odometer, fuel, and propane levels, and you'll sail through the deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Mount Hermon a good base for a family RV trip?
Mount Hermon is one of Northern California's best family RV trip destinations. You're next door to Mount Hermon Adventures (zip lines and aerial courses), about 2 miles from Henry Cowell's giant redwoods and the Roaring Camp Railroads steam train, around 7 miles from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and its classic Giant Dipper roller coaster, and roughly 30 minutes from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Kids love tubing the San Lorenzo River in summer and spotting banana slugs on shaded trails. Family-friendly RV rentals in Mount Hermon often sleep 6 to 8, with bunk beds, outdoor TVs, and bike racks. Book a delivered RV at Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort and you can walk to the river straight from your site, no driving with tired kids required.
