Campgrounds and RV parks near North Auburn, CA

Folsom Lake offers opportunities for hiking, biking, running, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, waterskiing and boating, with bass, trout, catfish and perch among the common catches. The Oaks Nature Trails run within the Peninsula area, and a paved bike trail connects Beals Point to the American River Hike and Bike Trail. Auburn State Recreation Area, just east of town along the American River canyon, offers rafting on the Middle and North Forks, swimming holes, and miles of multi-use trails including the Western States and Tevis Cup routes. Old Town Auburn has Gold Rush-era streets, restaurants, and the Placer County Museum. Day trips reach Empire Mine State Historic Park in Grass Valley, the wineries of Placer Wine Country, and Lake Tahoe within roughly ninety minutes.

The foothill climate gives a long camping season with two distinct shoulders. Spring brings green hills, wildflowers, and full reservoirs, with comfortable daytime temperatures and the highest water levels for boating. It is also the busiest time at Peninsula Campground, which reopens after its winter closure. Summer is hot and dry, with daytime highs frequently in the 90s Fahrenheit and brown grass on the surrounding hills. Lake recreation peaks, weekends fill early, and afternoon shade becomes a priority when choosing a site. Fire restrictions are common from late spring through fall, and campfire rules can change quickly based on conditions. Fall cools off through October and November, crowds thin, and the canyon trails are pleasant again. Winter is mild but wet, with most rainfall arriving between November and March. Folsom Lake SRA closes the Peninsula Campground from October 1 through March 31 for seasonal closure and maintenance, so winter RV trips rely on the private parks around Auburn and on Beals Point on the west shore of the lake.

Expect classic Sierra foothill terrain: rolling hills covered in blue oak, foothill pine, and grassland that turns gold by midsummer. Peninsula is reached by a round-about drive out Highway 49 to Pilot Hill and then about eleven miles west on narrow and windy Rattlesnake Bar Road, so plan fuel, groceries, and supplies before the final approach. Motorhomes over 24 feet and trailers over 18 feet are not advised. Cell coverage is spotty around the lake and weaker inside the canyon. Summer sun is intense and shade varies by site, so awnings and water matter. Wildlife includes deer, wild turkeys, ground squirrels, and rattlesnakes on warm days. The private parks near Interstate 80 offer full hookups and easier access to fuel, dump stations, and grocery stores in Auburn.
