Campgrounds and RV parks near Pajaro, CA

The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, a short drive south, offers hiking trails and year-round wildlife viewing, with sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, and hundreds of bird species recorded in the estuary. Guided boat and kayak tours launch from Moss Landing harbor. Sunset State Beach provides long stretches of sand below coastal bluffs, with dunes rising up to about 200 feet. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk amusement park is about 30 minutes north. Whale-watching trips depart year-round from Moss Landing, with humpbacks commonly sighted in summer and fall. Pinto Lake supports paddling and freshwater fishing for visitors who bring kayaks, canoes, or small boats.

The Pajaro area has a mild, dry-summer Mediterranean climate, so RV camping is viable year-round, but each season has trade-offs. Summer through early fall is the peak window. Sites at Sunset State Beach and the Santa Cruz / Monterey Bay KOA Holiday fill weeks or months in advance for weekends, and coastal mornings often start in fog before clearing. Late spring and early fall offer warmer, drier weather with thinner crowds. September is typically the warmest month on the immediate coast, which makes early fall a strong choice for ocean trips. Winter brings the bulk of the year's rain, concentrated from December through February, when the lower Pajaro Valley has historically been prone to flooding. At Sunset State Beach, the Dunes and Pine Hollow loops close from October through mid-March, leaving South Camp and the group camp open year-round. Privately operated parks like the Santa Cruz / Monterey Bay KOA Holiday, Moss Landing KOA Express, and Pinto Lake RV Park stay open year-round.

Expect a working agricultural landscape close to the coast. The valley around Pajaro and Watsonville is dominated by berry fields and row crops, with farm traffic on rural roads and produce stands along Highway 1. Coastal mornings are commonly foggy and cool, even when inland valleys warm up by afternoon. Sunset State Beach sites have no hookups, and RVs are capped at 31 feet in length; a dump station is available on site for a fee, and the nearest alternative is at New Brighton State Beach. KOA properties on San Andreas Road and at Moss Landing offer full hookups, longer rig accommodations, and standard amenities like showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Dogs are restricted on state beach sand but allowed leashed in campgrounds. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the Highway 1 corridor.
