Campgrounds and RV parks near Plymouth, CA

Wine tasting drives the daytime itinerary. The Shenandoah Valley holds dozens of small, family-run wineries within a short drive of Plymouth, with Zinfandel and Rhône varietals the regional specialty. Anglers head to Pardee Reservoir for trout, kokanee salmon, bass, and catfish, or to Lake Amador, a 400-acre lake with 13.5 miles of shoreline stocked with trout, bass, and catfish. Pardee allows boating and shoreline fishing but prohibits body-water contact, including swimming, water skiing, and personal watercraft, because the reservoir supplies East Bay drinking water; two swimming pools sit next to the café. Lake Amador permits swimming in the lake and a swim pond but prohibits skiing, tubing, and jet skis. Families can add a cavern tour at Black Chasm or California Cavern, a stop at Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park, or a drive up Highway 88 toward Hope Valley and Kirkwood.

Plymouth has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Summer highs in the foothills routinely climb into the 90s Fahrenheit, with very little rainfall from June through September. Shaded oak-canopy campgrounds at Pardee and Lake Amador help, but RVers should plan for serious afternoon heat and run air conditioning on shore power where possible. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows. March through May brings wildflowers, green hills, and mild daytime temperatures, while September through early November delivers harvest season in the Shenandoah Valley vineyards and the fall color drive on Route 88 through Hope Valley's aspen groves. Winter is the wet season, with most rainfall concentrated between December and February. Note that Pardee Lake Recreation closes during the migratory bird season and reopens in February; 49er Village and Lake Amador stay open year-round, but storms can bring downed limbs, muddy sites, and chain controls on Highway 88 over Carson Pass.

Sites in the Plymouth area lean toward shaded, oak-studded layouts on rolling foothill terrain. 49er Village offers hundreds of full-hookup sites with 30- and 50-amp service, paved interior roads, two pools, a hot tub, playground, fishing ponds, and an on-site café. Pardee Lake Recreation provides two campgrounds, Lake View and Oaks, with picnic tables, fire rings, and shared water spigots; twelve short-term full-hookup RV sites sit in Lake View, and showers, flush restrooms, and laundry are within walking distance near the marina. Lake Amador includes a 73-site full-hookup RV park on a private peninsula with free Wi-Fi, plus 113 standard campsites with hot showers and flush toilets. Stays at Pardee are capped at two weeks, with a maximum of eight people and two vehicles per site. Cell coverage is variable in the canyons around the reservoirs.
