Campgrounds and RV parks near Rancho Murieta, CA

Folsom Lake is the main draw for water-based recreation in the area. The 18,000 acre lake and recreation area offers opportunities for hiking, biking, running, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, water skiing and boating, with fishing for trout, catfish, big and small mouth bass or perch. Beals Point has beach access for day visitors and connects to the American River Bike Trail, a paved route that runs west toward Sacramento. East of Rancho Murieta, Highway 49 leads into Amador County wine country, with tasting rooms in the Shenandoah Valley clustered near Plymouth. Black Chasm caverns, Indian Grinding Rock, antiques, wineries and restaurants are close by, making for easy day trips from any of the foothill RV parks.

The Sacramento area has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The Southern Sacramento Valley has a mild climate and abundance of sunshine year-round, summers are virtually cloudless with warm dry days and mild pleasant nights, and during the November through February rainy season over half the total annual precipitation falls. Summer is peak season at the lake, when daytime highs commonly reach the low to mid 90s and the beaches and boat ramps draw heavy weekend traffic. Reservations for Beals Point fill quickly for summer weekends and holiday weeks. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for foothill travel, with mild days, lower wildfire concern, and easier site availability. Winter is the slowest season: the lake stays open but cold and wet weather is common, and Peninsula is a remote campground subject to winter and road closures, with reservations made only during the on-season and off-season availability first-come, first-served. Late summer and early fall can bring wildfire smoke from Sierra fires; check current air-quality advisories before booking.

Folsom Lake sites are developed but rustic by RV-resort standards. Beals Point has 69 family campsites that accommodate tents, trailers and motor homes up to 31 feet long, full hookups are provided in the RV loop in sites 50-69, and a sanitation dump station is available. The campground has drinking water, restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers, a campfire center, day-use picnic area and a dump station; check-out is noon, check-in is 2 p.m., and pets must be kept on a 6 foot maximum leash and never left unattended. Road noise from nearby highways can carry into some sites. Private resorts in the foothills run closer to the resort end of the spectrum: 49er Village has two heated swimming pools, a jacuzzi, billiards, shuffleboard, horseshoes and catch and release fishing in two ponds. Expect tighter site spacing at private resorts and more open layouts at the state park.
