Campgrounds and RV parks near San Bruno, CA

The Bay Area Ridge Trail and San Bruno Mountain State and County Park offer hiking with panoramic views of San Francisco, the Bay, and the Pacific. BART connects San Bruno directly to downtown San Francisco, Oakland, and SFO, making it practical to leave the rig parked and ride in for sightseeing. South on Highway 1, Pacifica State Beach draws surfers and beachcombers, and the paved Coastside Trail at Half Moon Bay runs along the bluffs above Francis Beach. At Pillar Point Harbor, visitors watch fishing boats unload, eat at harbor seafood spots, and view the Mavericks surf break. Whale watching from shore is possible during gray whale migration, and tide pools appear at low tide along the San Mateo coast.

The San Bruno area has a Mediterranean climate with a clear wet and dry split. Winter, from about December through February, brings most of the year's rain and the highest chance of storms moving in off the Pacific. Coastal campgrounds stay open, but wind and rain can make sites near the bluffs uncomfortable. Spring sees rainfall taper off and wildflowers bloom on San Bruno Mountain and along the coast. Summer is dry, but it is not the warmest season on the immediate coast. Marine fog often pushes in over Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, and the San Francisco shoreline through July and August, with mornings cool and gray before clearing in the afternoon. Inland temperatures can be much warmer than at the coast. September and October are typically the warmest and clearest months on the coast and are popular for camping. Late fall brings the return of rain and shorter days, and sneaker waves and rip currents are an ongoing hazard along south- and southwest-facing beaches in San Mateo County.

Expect cool, often breezy weather year-round, even when inland California is hot. Layers and a windbreaker are useful any month. Coastal sites can be exposed, and Francis Beach can get very windy during the day. Hookup levels vary widely. More than half the Francis Beach campground offers electrical hookups, there are no water or sewer hookups at the campsites, but there is a dump and potable water station. Maximum length for trailers, campers and motorhomes at Francis Beach is 40 feet. Private parks like San Francisco RV Resort and Pillar Point RV Park offer full hookups and accommodate larger rigs. Ocean swimming is not advised, as dangerous rip currents and extremely cold water make conditions hazardous. Cell coverage is strong throughout the area.
