Campgrounds and RV parks near Thornton, CA

The Delta is the main draw. Both New Hope Landing RV Park and Marina on the Mokelumne River and Snug Harbor RV Park & Marina on Steamboat Slough operate public boat launches, making fishing for striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish, and sturgeon a primary activity. Kayaking and paddleboarding on the quieter sloughs suit families with kids. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Tower Park Resort rents fishing boats, pontoons, kayaks, and paddleboards for travelers without their own watercraft. Off the water, Lodi's wineries are a short drive east and focus heavily on zinfandel. The historic Delta towns of Walnut Grove, Locke, and Isleton offer riverfront dining and small museums. Families staying at Tower Park have on-site water slides, a lazy river, mini golf, and laser tag without leaving the resort. Sacramento's Old Town and the California State Railroad Museum are roughly thirty miles north.

Thornton sits in a Mediterranean climate zone with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Late spring through early fall is peak RV season on the Delta, with reliably dry weather, warm days, and the busiest boating and fishing. Expect sites at the family-oriented resorts to book out well ahead for holiday weekends, particularly Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Winter is the wet season, with January typically the wettest month, and atmospheric river storms can raise Delta water levels and affect low-lying access roads on the islands. Most established campgrounds in the area remain open year-round, though water levels and weather conditions in the Delta vary considerably with California's wet and dry seasons, so travelers should check directly with each park before arriving in winter. Spring and fall are the shoulder seasons: mild temperatures, lower demand, and the best combination of availability and comfortable weather for sightseeing in nearby Lodi and Sacramento.

Levee roads are narrow, often single-lane, and lined with steep drop-offs to the water. Plan routes carefully for any rig over thirty feet, and avoid the small ferries unless the campground specifically directs you to use them. A car ferry still runs to Ryer Island, but a bridge route is available for towed rigs that would scrape on the ferry ramps. Summer days are dry and hot, often in the nineties, with cooler nights thanks to Delta breezes. Mosquitoes and gnats can be active near standing water at dusk. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-5 and Highway 12 corridors but can drop on the more remote sloughs. Most parks have small on-site stores for basics; full grocery runs are easiest in Lodi, Galt, or Stockton.
