Water is the main draw. Turlock Lake covers about 3,500 surface acres with 26 miles of shoreline, supporting water sports, waterskiing, swimming, fishing, and wildlife viewing when the park is open. Anglers can expect species like bass, catfish, and crappie in the local rivers and reservoirs. On the Merced River side, the slow-moving water is a good spot for swimmers of all abilities, and McConnell's recreation menu includes canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, and tubing. Lake Tulloch RV Campground and Marina runs a full-service marina with boat rentals, a gas dock, and lakefront sites, making it the practical base for boating and waterskiing in the foothills. Castle Air Museum, next door to its RV park, displays vintage military aircraft and is an easy rainy-day option for families.

The area has a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild, wet winters. Summers can be very hot, so adequate hydration and sun protection are important. Spring and fall are generally considered the best times to visit due to milder temperatures and lower demand at the foothill lakes. Reservation cycles track the season. McConnell and the George J. Hatfield group site book on a six-month rolling window through ReserveCalifornia, with summer weekends filling first. Lake Tulloch shifts with the water-sports calendar: private boat docks and slips are unavailable from late September to mid-May, and weekday camping slows noticeably outside boating season. Turlock Lake SRA itself has been undergoing changes. Stanislaus County, Turlock Irrigation District, and California State Parks approved a Joint Powers Agreement for Stanislaus County Parks and Recreation to operate the Turlock Lake SRA day-use area, with plans to make improvements and possibly reopen the park as soon as summer 2027. Camping reservations are not currently being accepted, so check current status before planning a trip there. Wildflowers peak after spring rains, and summer weekends fill the foothill lakes well in advance.

State recreation area campgrounds in this area are rustic. At McConnell, there are no hookups available for RVs, but drinking water and a dump station are on site, each campsite has a rock fire pit, picnic table, and food lockers, and modern restrooms include coin-operated showers. Sites accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs up to 30 feet in length. George J. Hatfield is even more basic, with tent-only walk-in campsites and limited facilities. Lake Tulloch is the closest thing to a full-service RV park in the foothills, offering lakefront sites with space to tie up a boat, lakefront cabins with private docks, and full hookup sites with 50-amp service, water, and sewer. Castle Air Museum RV Park is small, flat, and utilitarian, with full hook-up spaces that include water, sewer, electricity, and Wi-Fi, plus several dry-camp spots. Expect oak shade, summer heat, and quiet weeknights at the river parks.
