Campgrounds and RV parks near West Modesto, CA

River recreation drives most trips. Anglers at Caswell Memorial State Park fish the Stanislaus for bass, catfish, crappie, and other species, and the park also supports easy hiking, swimming, and paddling. At George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area, more than a mile of Merced River frontage opens the door to fishing, river wading, kayaking, and nature study. Turtle Beach RV Resort sits on the San Joaquin River with sandy frontage, a boat launch, and a fish-cleaning station, drawing anglers after striper and carp. Beyond the rivers, day trips reach Yosemite, the Delta, the Diablo Range, and Central Valley wineries. From Kit Fox RV Park, guests can reach San Luis Reservoir, Del Puerto Canyon, and the Diablo Range for hiking and outdoor recreation.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for camping in the West Modesto area. Daytime highs stay mild, rivers run fuller from snowmelt in spring, and crowds are lighter than at peak summer. Summers are hot, arid, and clear, with the yearly temperature typically varying from 39°F to 95°F and rarely above 103°F. Park staff at Caswell describe summer temperatures of 85 to 100 degrees and note it is not unusual to see several consecutive days above 100 degrees from June through September. Winter is cool and damp rather than cold. Modesto typically does not experience regular snowfall, averages about 13 inches of precipitation per year, and the wettest month is usually January. Tule fog is common on winter mornings in the valley and can slow highway travel. Mosquitoes are a real planning factor near the rivers and become particularly active during summer months due to the river and dense vegetation, so insect repellent is essential.

Expect Central Valley conditions: flat terrain, hot summer afternoons, cool nights, and limited shade outside the riverside parks. State park sites lean rustic. Caswell offers 64 family sites designed for tent camping and smaller rigs, with a maximum length of 24 feet for motorhomes and 21 feet for trailers, no hookups, plus flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, picnic tables, fire rings, and food lockers. George J. Hatfield is tent-focused with a small parking lot that can accommodate shorter RVs, drinking water, restrooms, and picnic tables, with no hookups. Private parks deliver the full-hookup experience. Kit Fox RV Park offers full hookups with 50/30-amp service, pull-through sites, WiFi, laundry, showers, a dump station, and a playground. French Camp's RV sites accommodate larger rigs with 30 and 50-amp full hookups, restrooms and showers, laundry, WiFi, and a heated pool.
