Campgrounds and RV parks near West Point, CA

The area's main draw is Gold Rush history paired with foothill outdoor recreation. Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park preserves the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America, with 1,185 mortar holes carved into marbleized limestone by the Northern Sierra Miwok, alongside a reconstructed village, ceremonial roundhouse, and the Chaw'se Regional Indian Museum. Day-trip options include the small mining towns along Highway 49, the village of Volcano, and Calaveras Big Trees State Park up Highway 4 for giant sequoia groves and river swimming on the Stanislaus. The Mokelumne River drainage offers fishing, swimming holes, and dispersed exploration in Stanislaus and Eldorado National Forest country. Shenandoah Valley wineries lie roughly half an hour west near Plymouth, and Kirkwood and Bear Valley ski areas are within reach in winter.

West Point has a Mediterranean foothill climate: wet, cool winters and hot, dry summers. The wet season runs roughly November through April and delivers most of the area's precipitation, with March typically the rainiest month. Snow is possible at town elevation (around 2,600 feet) and becomes increasingly likely as Highway 4 climbs toward Arnold and Bear Valley or as Highway 88 climbs toward Kirkwood; chain controls are common on those routes in winter storms. Spring brings green hills, full rivers, and wildflowers from March through May, and most lower-elevation campgrounds are open year-round. Summer is peak RV season. Days run hot and dry, nights cool off noticeably at elevation, and reservations fill quickly at Jackson Rancheria RV Park and Golden Pines RV Resort and Campground around holiday weekends. Fire restrictions, including campfire bans, are routine across Stanislaus and Eldorado National Forest from roughly June through October. Fall is the most underrated window: warm days, cool nights, low rain risk, and lighter campground demand from mid-September through October.

Access roads to West Point are winding two-lane mountain highways. Plan extra drive time, especially with a trailer, and stick to Highway 88 or Highway 26 rather than narrow shortcuts. Site length varies sharply by campground. The Indian Grinding Rock campground has room for vehicles up to 27 feet, with flush toilets, showers, and drinking water on site. Jackson Rancheria RV Park offers oversized level concrete pads with full hookups including 50, 30, and 20 amp power, water, cable TV, WiFi, and sewer, plus a year-round pool and two spas. Golden Pines and Gold Country Campground Resort both offer full-hookup sites suitable for larger rigs; confirm length and amp service when booking. Cell coverage is patchy off Highway 88, so verify your carrier before relying on it for navigation or work.
