Campgrounds and RV parks near Wilton, CA

The Cosumnes River Preserve is the marquee outdoor stop, roughly 20 minutes south. The Preserve protects one of California's largest remaining valley oak riparian forests and one of the few protected wetland habitats in the Central Valley. Over four miles of trails run from the Visitor Center and the boardwalk, including a paved wetlands loop and a longer river-walk levee. Gate hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the boardwalk and lower lot, and to 6:30 PM at the upper lot. The Preserve is day-use only; no camping or pets on trails. Folsom Lake State Recreation Area lies about 25 miles northeast and offers hiking, biking, horseback riding, picnicking, waterskiing, and boating. Downtown Sacramento, the Old Sacramento waterfront, and the California State Railroad Museum are roughly 25 minutes northwest. Anglers can fish the Sacramento River from Sherwood Harbor Marina and RV Park or launch a kayak at the Preserve dock.

Wilton shares the Sacramento Valley climate: hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Summers are largely cloudless with warm, dry days and mild nights, while winters are short, cool, and wet. During the November-through-February rainy season, over half the annual precipitation falls, but measurable rain occurs only about ten days monthly. Summer is peak RV season for Folsom Lake and the rivers, but valley heat regularly pushes past 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so rigs need working air conditioning and shaded sites fill quickly. Folsom Lake is busiest between April and September, and weekdays outside the mid-June to August school break are best for avoiding crowds. State park sites on ReserveCalifornia tend to book out fast for summer weekends. Fall brings cooler nights, harvest activity in the surrounding farmland, and the first sandhill cranes returning to the Cosumnes wetlands, which usually begin to arrive in late September. Winter is the off-season for valley camping with rain, tule fog, and short days, but it is excellent for birding, with very large concentrations of waterfowl using the Cosumnes River Preserve. Spring brings wildflowers, mild temperatures, and a busy reservation window for state parks.

Expect an agricultural landscape of pasture, vineyards, and oak savanna rather than forest. Roads off Highway 99 and Grant Line Road are narrow in places, so large rigs should map the route in advance. Cell coverage is generally good across Sacramento County. Some of the closest parks have age or lifestyle restrictions, which matters for families. Laguna Del Sol Clothing Optional welcomes singles, couples, and families but is a nudist resort, with a required orientation tour on arrival. In-city parks such as Sacramento Shade RV Park are commonly RV-only with no tents. Expect full hookups, paved or gravel pads, and limited on-site recreation at the urban parks, with the trade-off being quick access to downtown Sacramento, Cal Expo events, and the airport. Summer afternoons run hot, so plan errands and hikes for morning hours and confirm shaded sites when booking.
