Camping near Yosemite Lakes, California
Yosemite Lakes is an unincorporated community in Madera County in the Sierra Nevada foothills, sitting between Coarsegold and Oakhurst along the Highway 41 corridor. It functions as a staging area for trips into Yosemite National Park's South Entrance, accessed by Highway 41, which is the best route for reaching Wawona and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. RV travelers use the area because foothill elevations stay accessible year-round while the park interior gets snow.
The campgrounds closest to Yosemite Lakes range from a member-only cooperative to private RV resorts and a state recreation area. Park of the Sierras in Coarsegold is an Escapees co-op that is not open to the general public and requires Escapees RV Club membership. Yosemite RV Resort sits in the Yosemite Lakes area, and High Sierra RV Park in Oakhurst offers full hookups along the Fresno River. South of the foothills, the Millerton Lake State Recreation Area campground has 135 sites on a bluff overlooking the lake, with many sites offering lake views, split across loops including Rocky Point, Mono, Fort Miller, Duma Strand, Meadows and Valley Oak.
Things to do near Yosemite Lakes
Yosemite National Park is the main draw, with the South Entrance roughly 45 minutes north on Highway 41. The Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias sits just inside that entrance, and the drive from Wawona to Yosemite Valley continues along winding Highway 41. Closer to camp, Millerton Lake offers over 40 miles of shoreline with boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, water skiing, jet skiing, swimming, windsurfing and sailing, plus hiking and wildlife viewing that includes bald and golden eagles. The park runs special boat tours to view bald eagles during winter. Bass Lake, a short drive east, adds another option for swimming and fishing. Anglers can also fish the Fresno River at riverside RV parks in Oakhurst.

Summer is peak season. Highway 41 is the busiest approach to Yosemite, and booking campgrounds well in advance is essential from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Yosemite no longer requires a timed vehicle reservation to enter the park in 2026, but entrance stations can see long waits and parking in Yosemite Valley often fills early on summer weekends.
Spring brings runoff, wildflowers and full waterfalls in Yosemite, with cooler nights in the foothills. Fall offers thinner crowds, mild days and good fishing. Winter is the quiet season. The foothills around Yosemite Lakes rarely see lasting snow, but chains may be required on the routes into the park during winter storms. The Tioga Road across the high country is closed in winter, typically from around November until late spring or early summer, so the high country is off-limits then. Some park campgrounds inside Yosemite close seasonally, while private foothill RV parks generally operate year-round.

We rented this RV for the long weekend for our first camping trip with our 1-year-old and 5-year-old, and we had such a wonderful time! The RV was incredibly clean, new, and comfortable. We also needed the trailer to be delivered, and the entire communication and delivery process was so smooth and right on time. We really appreciate all of the help and kindness from the owner. On our way back, our car wouldn’t start when he came to pick up the trailer. He took the time to help us with our car and suggested something that actually worked and got it started! We truly appreciated him going above and beyond to help us. We would definitely book another trip with him in the future.

RV was nice and clean, a couple of mishaps refrigerator door does not lock so our food fell out all over the floor neither does the cabinet door and our dry goods also flew out onto the floor, battery would not hold a charge.

I truly can’t say enough about how amazing our experience was with Andrea’s travel trailer. The communication before booking was outstanding, and when we needed a couple of extra considerations they were so kind and helpful. The trailer was delivered in immaculate shape and cleanliness. Everything functioned perfectly and there were no surprises, other than the fact that the trailer was even better than expected. We wouldn’t hesitate to rent this trailer again, and anyone who rents it will be VERY happy with both the trailer and the booking experience!

How to book campgrounds near Yosemite Lakes
Booking channels depend on the campground. Reservations for the Millerton Lake State Recreation Area campground are made through the ReserveCalifornia system, online or by phone, with sites bookable up to six months in advance. For Yosemite's in-park campgrounds, reservations go through Recreation.gov on a rolling release schedule that fills within minutes for summer dates. Private parks like High Sierra RV Park take direct reservations through their own websites. Yosemite RV Resort is a Thousand Trails property and is booked through the Thousand Trails system. Park of the Sierras is a cooperative that is not open to the public and requires Escapees RV Club membership to stay.
What to expect
Expect Sierra foothill terrain: oak and pine woodland, rolling hills, narrow side roads and limited cell coverage once off Highway 41. At Millerton Lake, sites 117-143 have electric hookups and sites 91-143 have shade shelters, and all sites include a paved parking spur, table, food storage cabinet, fire ring and grill. Amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers and a dump station. Most Millerton Lake sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 36 feet. Private foothill parks tend toward closer site spacing. Stock up before arriving; grocery options are concentrated in Oakhurst. Bear-aware food storage is enforced inside Yosemite. Summer afternoons in the foothills are hot and dry, and fire restrictions are common.
