Campgrounds near Dix Hills
Dix Hills sits in central Suffolk County on Long Island, roughly midway between the North Shore and the South Shore. RV travelers based here have access to state park campgrounds on both coastlines plus a National Park Service site on the ocean-facing barrier island. Most developed campgrounds within reach are run by New York State Parks and use the ReserveAmerica booking system, while Gateway National Recreation Area uses Recreation.gov.
Heckscher State Park, on the Great South Bay in East Islip, is the closest full-service state campground and offers tent and trailer sites plus newer waterfront cottages. Wildwood State Park in Wading River, on the North Shore bluffs above Long Island Sound, is the largest campground on Long Island and the only state park on the Island offering full hookups for trailers. Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island is tent-only and reached by passenger ferry from Patchogue.
For trips oriented toward New York City, Floyd Bennett Field in Gateway National Recreation Area offers tent and RV sites in Brooklyn. Kettletown State Park in southwestern Connecticut is a further option across the Sound, though its campground has been closed since flood damage in August 2024 and remains closed for the 2026 season.
Things to do near Dix Hills
Water access drives most trips. Heckscher State Park has bay swimming, boat launching, kayaking and canoeing on the Great South Bay, and four miles of paved multi-use trails for biking and walking. Wildwood State Park has two miles of Long Island Sound beach, roughly twelve miles of marked hiking trails, a playground, ball fields, basketball courts, and shoreline fishing.
Watch Hill sits next to the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, with ocean beach, a self-guiding nature trail, ranger-led programs, and guided canoe trips through the salt marsh. Floyd Bennett Field pairs hiking and paved bike paths with historic hangars, an archery range, kayaking on Jamaica Bay, and bus-and-subway access into Manhattan. Fishing, birding along the Atlantic flyway, and beach days round out the region.

The camping season on Long Island is short and concentrated. Heckscher State Park's campground typically operates from late May through early September, with its waterfront cottages available across a longer three-season window. Wildwood State Park has a longer camping window, running roughly from early April through Columbus Day weekend. Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island generally operates from mid-May through mid-October and is run by concessioner LoveFINS.
July and August are peak. Weekend sites fill quickly at Wildwood and Heckscher, and lifeguarded swimming at state park beaches is limited to the posted summer schedule. Bay and ocean water are warmest in late July and August.
Spring and early fall are cooler and less crowded, with better midweek availability. Tropical storms and nor'easters are most likely from late summer into fall, and these can suspend ferry service to Fire Island. Winter closures apply to nearly all developed campgrounds in the area; Floyd Bennett Field is the local exception, with an operating window that runs April through October.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

For a cheap RV rental in Dix Hills, book midweek in May or late September when demand drops and Long Island traffic eases. Filter by Instant Book and look for hosts offering weekly discounts, which can reduce your total by 10 to 20 percent. Remember to budget for fuel, tolls, and campground fees so your final cost is clear before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dix%20Hills%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Dix Hills?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular New York State driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dix Hills. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required, even for larger Class A motorhomes on the platform. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork shuffle at pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local automobile association, which usually costs under $20 and takes minutes to obtain. That's it, you're ready to roll down the Long Island Expressway.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseIs RV rental insurance included when I rent an RV in Dix Hills?
Every RVezy booking in Dix Hills includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered before you leave the driveway. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle and provides financial peace of mind, though it is not traditional auto insurance. You choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host, so you can match the plan to your Long Island RV trip. Whether you are heading to Montauk or camping at Wildwood State Park, you will have backup if an issue comes up on the road or at the campground. Review the coverage details on RVezy before booking so you know exactly what is included.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Dix Hills RV rental?
Booking an RV rental in Dix Hills is low risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts. That means consistent, fair rules whether you are renting a campervan for a Fire Island weekend or a Class C for a two-week trip to Acadia. Specific refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel and the booking details, and additional protections may apply for major travel disruptions. If your plans change, log into your RVezy account to view your cancellation options. Review the full policy on the RVezy Help Center before booking so you know what to expect.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Dix Hills RV rental?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental options in Dix Hills are plentiful, since many Long Island hosts are pet owners themselves. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find listings that welcome your dog, and message the host beforehand with your pet's size and breed so check-in is smooth. Once you have the RV, Long Island offers great dog-friendly spots: West Hills County Park in Huntington has miles of leashed trails, Sunken Meadow State Park allows leashed dogs in designated areas, and Cedar Point County Park in East Hampton has a popular dog-friendly beach area. Pack a towel, the sand sticks after a Long Island Sound swim.
suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/ParksCan the RV be delivered to me in Dix Hills?
Yes, RV delivery in Dix Hills is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip driving a large rig through Suffolk County traffic. Many hosts will deliver the RV directly to your home, to a campground like Battle Row in Old Bethpage, or out to Hither Hills State Park in Montauk. They will level it, hook up water and electric, run a full orientation, and walk you through the propane stove, gray water tank, and other systems. Delivery fees vary by distance and are set by each host. Filter by Delivery on RVezy and message hosts directly to confirm your drop-off spot and pricing.

For shorter trips, Wildwood State Park in Wading River is about 40 miles away and Robert Moses State Park is about 25 miles south. Check the mileage details on each listing before booking, and message the host if you have a specific route in mind.

Indian Island County Park in Riverhead is open year-round at the mouth of the Peconic River. For beach camping, Hither Hills State Park in Montauk is famous for oceanfront sites. Book Hither Hills as soon as reservations open through the New York State Parks system, those spots fill quickly every spring.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Dix Hills?
Late May through mid-October is prime RV season for a Dix Hills RV trip, with July and August bringing warm summer days perfect for Long Island Sound and Atlantic beaches. The shoulder season from mid-September through late October is a favorite pick, with comfortable temperatures, quieter campgrounds, and North Fork vineyards in harvest. Spring from mid-April through May is also pleasant, with mild days and cherry blossoms across the Gold Coast. Winters are cold with occasional snow, but some hosts offer winterized RVs for off-season travelers. Columbus Day weekend is a great choice for a mix of weather, foliage, and open campsites.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Is Dix Hills a good place to start?
Dix Hills is a great spot for a first time renting an RV. Your host will run a full pickup orientation covering driving, leveling, propane, water systems, and dumping, so nothing is left to guesswork. If you are nervous about driving, ask your host about delivery and setup at your destination, then practice on quieter local roads before any big trip. Suffolk County roads are well signed and gas stations are plentiful. Start with a 2 to 3 night trip to Wildwood State Park to build confidence, and use RVezy's host messaging to ask questions before pickup. By night two, you will feel much more comfortable behind the wheel.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Long Island trip?
You are never stranded with an RVezy rental from Dix Hills. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan. If a tire goes flat on the Northern State Parkway or you have a battery issue at Smith Point County Park, one call gets help dispatched to your location. The Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway have frequent service areas, and Suffolk County has many RV-capable repair shops in towns like Medford, Riverhead, and Patchogue. Your host is also typically a quick text away and knows the rig well. Save the roadside assistance number in your phone at pickup for peace of mind from Dix Hills to Montauk Point.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008934-Roadside-assistanceCan I take my Dix Hills RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Dix Hills across state lines is one of the best parts of renting here. You are a quick ferry or bridge ride from Connecticut, and destinations like Cape Cod (about 220 miles), the Adirondacks (about 250 miles), and Washington DC (about 260 miles) are all within reasonable reach. Cross-border travel to Canada is allowed by many hosts but requires advance approval and may affect coverage, so message the host before booking and confirm in writing. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. For a quick getaway, the Hudson Valley wineries are about 90 minutes northwest, perfect for a long weekend.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
For a motorhome rental in Dix Hills, budget around 7 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, and 16 to 22 mpg for a campervan rental in Dix Hills (Class B). Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, with a 20 to 30 percent mpg hit being typical. Long Island gas prices often run above the national average, and stations in Commack and Melville can be cheaper than those right off the LIE exits. For a 500-mile round trip to Montauk in a Class C, plan for roughly $180 to $240 in fuel based on current prices. Filling up at warehouse club stations like Costco in Holbrook before heading east can add up to noticeable savings.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds for my Long Island RV trip?
Book early to secure the best campgrounds near Dix Hills. New York State Parks like Wildwood and Hither Hills open reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and Hither Hills oceanfront sites can sell out within minutes when the booking window opens. Suffolk County parks like Indian Island, Cedar Point, and Smith Point take reservations through the Suffolk County Parks system. For summer weekends, lock in your campground before you book the RV. Private campgrounds like Battle Row in Old Bethpage often have more last-minute availability. Aim for a Sunday-to-Thursday stay to find open sites even in July.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are Long Island driving conditions like for an RV?
Driving an RV around Dix Hills is more manageable than many expect, with a little local know-how. Stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Northern State Parkway exits onto truck-legal routes, and Sunrise Highway, which handle RVs of all sizes. Avoid the parkways marked with the green and white acorn shield: Northern State Parkway, Southern State Parkway, and the Meadowbrook prohibit commercial and tall vehicles and have low bridge clearances. Rush hour on the LIE (roughly 7 to 10 am and 4 to 7 pm) is heavy, so plan departures for mid-morning or evenings. Summer Hamptons traffic eastbound on Fridays is famously slow, leave Thursday night if you can. Off peak, you can reach Montauk in about 2.5 hours.
dot.ny.gov/regional-offices/region10What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Dix Hills?
Long Island campgrounds offer a strong mix of comfort and nature. Most state parks like Wildwood and Hither Hills provide picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, hot showers, and dump stations, with electric hookups at trailer sites but typically not full sewer at each site. Suffolk County parks like Indian Island have similar amenities with year-round access at select locations. Private campgrounds such as Battle Row in Old Bethpage offer full hookups (water, electric, and sewer) at most sites. Potable water fill stations are available at every major campground, and dump stations are generally included for registered campers. Confirm specific amenities directly with the park before booking.
parks.ny.gov/parks/wildwood/details.aspxWhat's typically included inside a Dix Hills RV rental?
Renting an RV in Dix Hills usually means stepping into a vehicle that is ready to camp. Most listings include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, and dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable beds, dining seating with seatbelts for travel, climate control, and often a TV. Many hosts include outdoor essentials like camp chairs, a folding table, and a basic toolkit. Onboard generators are common on Class A and Class C rigs, while campervans often run on solar with a small inverter. Linens and kitchen kits may be included or offered as add-ons. Check each listing's amenities section, and message the host directly if you need something specific.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736594-What-amenities-are-included-with-my-RV-rentalWhat add-ons and options do Dix Hills RV hosts offer?
Dix Hills hosts offer a range of add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include linens and towels, kitchen kits with pots and dishes, generator hours for off-grid camping, bike racks, kayaks, outdoor grills, and propane refills. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on for first-timers heading to spots like Wildwood State Park. Pickup and drop-off windows are commonly mid-afternoon and late morning respectively, and many hosts will flex these times if you ask in advance. Review the add-ons section on each listing carefully and confirm pricing with the host so your final cost is clear before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736594-What-amenities-are-included-with-my-RV-rentalHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in Dix Hills is handled entirely through RVezy's secure platform. Never pay off-platform, since that voids your protection. You typically pay a portion at booking and the balance before your trip start, with major credit cards accepted. The security deposit is held as a pre-authorization on your card separately from your booking payment, usually a day or two before pickup, and it is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good condition. Deposit amounts are set by the host and shown on the listing. Do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, which is your best protection if any dispute comes up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or store an RV in Dix Hills before and after my trip?
Knowing where to park an RV in Dix Hills makes your trip easier on both ends. Most residential streets in the Town of Huntington allow short-term RV parking, but overnight street parking restrictions apply, so review the Town of Huntington code before leaving a rig out front. Many hosts offer delivery so you do not need to park it yourself. For dedicated RV storage, facilities along Route 110 in Melville and Farmingdale offer monthly indoor and outdoor options. If you are picking up from a host, plan to transfer your gear in their driveway during the orientation. Schedule pickup for mid-morning to give yourself a full day for orientation, gear loading, and a relaxed first drive.
