Camping near Elwood, New York
Elwood sits in the Town of Huntington in western Suffolk County, roughly in the middle of Long Island. That location puts RV travelers within easy driving range of both shores: the Great South Bay and Fire Island to the south, and Long Island Sound beaches to the north. Most nearby campgrounds sit inside New York State Parks or federal park units, which shapes both the reservation process and the seasonal calendar.
On the south shore, Heckscher State Park fronts the Great South Bay with views toward Fire Island. Farther east on the North Shore, Wildwood State Park offers a large campground on a bluff above Long Island Sound. Watch Hill Campground sits on Fire Island itself and is reached only by ferry or private boat, so RVers typically stage a rig on the mainland and day-trip across.
For RVers willing to cross into other jurisdictions, Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn provides urban camping inside Gateway National Recreation Area, and Kettletown State Park lies across the Sound in southwestern Connecticut.
Things to do near Elwood
The area is built around water. Heckscher State Park offers bay swimming, boat launching, kayaking, and paddleboarding, plus paved multi-use trails for hiking and biking, picnic fields, and a playground. Families often base an RV trip here for the mix of beach, bike paths, and open space.
Wildwood State Park sits on a high bluff above Long Island Sound with beachfront for swimming, paddling, and surfcasting, plus hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, a playground, and sports fields. Watch Hill on Fire Island offers a lifeguarded beach, a visitor center, ranger-led programs, a marina, a small store, a snack bar, and a nature trail, along with access to the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness. Floyd Bennett Field gives access to Jamaica Bay paddling, historic hangars, and bike routes toward Jacob Riis Park.

The Long Island camping season is short and heavily weighted toward late spring through early fall. Watch Hill on Fire Island generally runs from May through mid-October, with summer weekends filling first and carrying longer minimum-stay requirements. State-park campgrounds on Long Island typically open in spring and close in mid- to late fall, so confirm dates on the ReserveAmerica listing for each park before booking.
Spring and fall shoulder seasons bring cooler nights, fewer crowds, and easier reservations, though some concessions and swim beaches operate on reduced schedules. Fall on the North Shore is a good window for hiking and cycling at Wildwood before the campground closes for the season.
Winter camping options are limited. Floyd Bennett Field is one of the few sites in the region that stays open year-round. Kettletown State Park Campground in Connecticut will remain closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons due to flood damage sustained during a heavy rainfall event in August 2024, and a reopening date has not been set, so confirm status before planning a trip across the Sound.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book campgrounds near Elwood
New York State Park campgrounds, including Heckscher and Wildwood, book through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance, with sites released at 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. on weekends from March 15 through Labor Day, and at 9 a.m. daily the rest of the year. Popular summer weekends at Wildwood sell out quickly once the window opens.
Fire Island National Seashore uses a different system. Watch Hill reservations can be made online at least 48 hours in advance, with a 3-day minimum for weekends during the peak summer season from July through Labor Day, a 2-day minimum for weekends in the off season, and a 5-day minimum for the Independence Day and Labor Day holiday weekends. Floyd Bennett Field books through Recreation.gov, with reservations available up to six months in advance.
What to expect camping near Elwood
Hookups vary widely. Wildwood State Park does not offer full hookups; sites are tent and trailer style with restrooms, showers, and water spigots throughout the loop. Heckscher State Park is similarly a seasonal state-park facility with basic amenities and cabin-style lodging rather than full RV hookups. Floyd Bennett Field has designated RV parking areas but is oriented toward tent camping in an urban setting.
Watch Hill is unusual: it is a walk-in tent and glamping campground reached by ferry from Patchogue, not an RV park. RVers typically leave the rig at a mainland campground and day-trip to Fire Island. Expect strict rules on pets, fires, and second vehicles at state and federal sites, and confirm equipment length limits when reserving.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Elwood, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Elwood, NY?
Good news: RV rental in Elwood, NY is surprisingly affordable compared to Hamptons hotels in summer. On RVezy you'll typically find travel trailers from around $100 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes from $200 to $325, and larger Class A coaches from $300 to $450. Prices peak from late June through Labor Day when Long Island beach season is in full swing. For a cheap RV rental in Elwood, target May, September, or October shoulder weeks, book mid week, and filter for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: many Huntington-area hosts knock 10 to 20 percent off stays of seven nights or longer, so even a North Fork wine country week can fit a family budget.
discoverlongisland.com/What license do I need to rent an RV in Elwood?
Great news for first time renters: a regular New York State driver's license (or your home state or country equivalent) is all you need to rent an RV in Elwood. No commercial driver's license, no special RV endorsement, no test. You must be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto association before you fly into JFK or LaGuardia and you're set. Most guests are amazed how quickly the licensing piece is handled, often in a few minutes online, leaving you free to focus on planning your Long Island RV trip.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseIs rental protection included when I rent an RV in Elwood, NY?
Yes, every RV rental in Elwood booked through RVezy includes access to a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Long Island Expressway with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout from the available RVezy protection plans, and each tier outlines what is covered for physical damage during your trip. Higher tiers generally reduce your out-of-pocket responsibility if something happens, which is reassuring if it is your first time renting an RV. Pro tip: review the plan details on the RVezy help center before booking so you know exactly what is included for your Long Island RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change after I book my RV in Elwood?
Plans change, and RVezy has you covered. Every booking follows the RVezy cancellation policy, which is set by RVezy at the platform level rather than by each host. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel, which is helpful on Long Island where Nor'easters and the occasional tropical system can roll through in late summer. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook so your trip stays on track. Pro tip: book early for July 4th week or a North Fork wine country getaway, then review the cancellation timeline in the RVezy help center so you know exactly where you stand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Elwood?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Elwood is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see Huntington-area hosts who welcome dogs. Long Island is a great place to bring your pup: West Hills County Park in Huntington has miles of wooded trails just minutes from Elwood, Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park allows leashed dogs in designated areas, and Cedar Point County Park in East Hampton is a classic dog-friendly camping spot. Message the host before booking to share your dog's size and breed and ask about cleaning expectations so check out is smooth.
parks.ny.gov/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Elwood?
Yes, RV delivery in Elwood is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather not drive a big rig through Huntington Station traffic. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer straight to Wildwood State Park in Wading River, Battle Row in Old Bethpage, your own driveway, or a family member's place for a backyard staycation. They will level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when searching and message the host with your destination so they can quote the mileage fee. Pro tip: delivery turns a campervan rental in Elwood into a true plug-and-play vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elwood%2C%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive, and is there an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
You have plenty of range. Most Elwood hosts include around 100 to 150 free miles per night, and a growing number offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect if you are planning a longer loop. Each listing spells out its mileage policy clearly before you book, and additional miles typically run about $0.30 to $0.45 each. From Elwood you are roughly 75 miles to Montauk Point, 130 miles to the Catskills, 150 miles to the Poconos, and 230 miles to Cape Cod, all comfortably doable. Pro tip: if you are planning a multi-state RV road trip from Elwood up to Acadia or down to Virginia Beach, filter for unlimited mileage hosts first to keep your budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elwood%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Elwood for an RV trip?
You've got fantastic options within an hour of Elwood. Wildwood State Park in Wading River sits on 600 wooded acres above Long Island Sound and has electric hookups for RVs. Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage (Nassau County) is the closest full-service option, just 20 minutes away. Indian Island County Park in Riverhead offers waterfront sites at the mouth of the Peconic River and is open year-round for self-contained rigs. For the beach lover, Hither Hills State Park in Montauk puts you right on the Atlantic, and Cedar Point County Park in East Hampton has classic North Fork charm. Book Wildwood and Hither Hills the moment the reservation window opens, they go fast.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Elwood, NY?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Elwood is mid-May through mid-October. June, September, and early October are the locals' favorite months: daytime highs sit in the 70s, humidity drops, mosquitoes ease up, and campgrounds aren't slammed. July and August deliver classic beach weather (80 to 88°F) but also peak crowds and peak pricing. Spring brings blooms at Planting Fields Arboretum in nearby Oyster Bay, and fall lights up the North Fork vineyards in stunning red and gold. Winter rentals are limited but possible for self-contained rigs at Indian Island. Pro tip: aim for the week after Labor Day for warm Atlantic water and half-empty campsites.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay around Elwood?
You'll do great, and you won't be alone. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, propane, and the dump station, plus their phone number for questions during your trip. For your first time renting an RV around Elwood, stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and the Northern State Parkway, and avoid Southern State Parkway, which has notoriously low bridges that won't clear most motorhomes. Take it easy through Huntington Village's narrow streets. Pro tip: if highway-merging Long Island traffic feels intimidating, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they drive much more like a large SUV.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/low-clearance-infoWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
Help is one call away. Every Elwood RV rental booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flats, lockouts, jump starts, fuel delivery, and towing. If a system inside the RV acts up such as the AC, fridge, or slide-out, your host is your first call and most issues are solved over the phone in minutes. RVezy support is also available before, during, and after every trip if anything escalates. Pro tip: save your host's number and the RVezy support contact in your phone before you leave Elwood, and snap a quick photo of the VIN plate so you can share details fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental across state lines or into Canada from Elwood?
Yes, an RV road trip from Elwood across state lines is welcomed and very popular. New England is right there: Mystic, Connecticut is reachable via the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry, Newport is a bit further, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire are about a day's drive. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and your protection plan, so message the host before booking and confirm in writing. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point to New London can cut hours off a New England loop and accepts most RVs, just confirm size limits when you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage do RVs get, and what should I budget for fuel?
Fuel budgeting is easier than you might think. Expect roughly 18 to 22 mpg for a Class B campervan, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C motorhome, 7 to 10 mpg for a Class A, and around 12 to 16 mpg for your tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Gas in the Elwood and Huntington area typically runs 20 to 40 cents above the national average, so check stations in nearby Commack or Smithtown for better prices, or fill up off-island in New Jersey on cross-state trips. For a typical 4-night, 300-mile motorhome rental Elwood loop, budget around $150 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: GasBuddy is your best friend on Long Island.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Elwood RV trip?
Book sooner than you think. New York State Parks like Wildwood and Hither Hills open campsite reservations 9 months in advance through the New York State Parks reservation system, and popular weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day can sell out within minutes. Suffolk County Parks such as Indian Island and Cedar Point use their own reservation system, and Nassau County's Battle Row books through Nassau County Parks. For a summer Elwood RV trip, aim to lock in campgrounds by January or February. Pro tip: midweek sites at Wildwood often have openings even in peak season if you can flex your dates.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Elwood and the rest of Long Island?
Long Island driving is manageable once you know two rules. First, parkways (Northern State, Southern State, Sunrise, Meadowbrook, Wantagh, Ocean) ban all commercial vehicles and RVs because of historically low stone bridges, some as low as 7 feet 7 inches. Stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Route 25, Route 25A, and Sunrise Highway east of Heckscher (which becomes RV-legal east of Exit 44). Second, plan to leave Elwood before 7 AM or after 7 PM on summer Fridays heading east, the LIE backs up badly toward the Hamptons. Pro tip: the free NY 511 app shows live parkway clearance warnings, a must for anyone renting a motorhome on Long Island.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Elwood?
Long Island campgrounds offer a solid range of amenities. Wildwood State Park has electric hookups, hot showers, a dump station, and a camp store. Battle Row offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at most sites plus laundry. Indian Island has electric and water at trailer sites, with a centralized dump station. Hither Hills is more rustic (electric only at most sites) but you're steps from the ocean. Public dump stations are also available at Cedar Point and Smith Point. For water fills between trips, the Town of Huntington's marine facilities and most state park entrances have potable spigots. Pro tip: carry a 25-foot fresh water hose and a 30-amp-to-50-amp adapter, you'll cover almost every Long Island hookup scenario.
parks.ny.gov/parks/wildwood/details.aspxWhat's typically included inside the RV itself?
You're getting a home on wheels. Most Elwood RV rentals come fully equipped with comfortable beds (sleeping anywhere from 2 in a campervan to 8+ in a Class C with bunkhouse), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC and propane furnace), a TV, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts include linens, towels, outdoor chairs, and a starter kit of paper goods. Wifi hotspots and onboard generators are common add-ons. Check the listing's amenity icons and ask the host directly if a specific item like a coffee maker, high chair, or beach gear is included. It often is, on the house.
consumer.ftc.gov/articles/buying-recreational-vehicleWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Elwood rental?
Hosts customize the experience to your trip. Popular add-ons in the Elwood area include delivery and setup ($2 to $5 per mile is typical), generators ($10 to $25 per day for the rental, plus fuel), bike racks, kayak racks, linen and kitchen packages ($25 to $75 flat), portable grills, and pet cleaning fees if you're bringing a dog. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Elwood, Huntington, Commack, or Northport, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation included free. Mileage policies vary by listing and are shown clearly upfront, ranging from 100 free miles per night to fully unlimited. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen package and you'll arrive to a fully made-up RV, perfect for a family RV trip Elwood weekend.
dos.ny.gov/consumer-protectionHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, no cash, no checks, no awkward back-and-forth with the host. A security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after a clean return as outlined in the RVezy help center. It is a hold, not a charge, so the funds remain yours unless there is documented damage. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around with your host at pickup and dropoff and take dated photos of the exterior, interior, tires, and odometer. That habit avoids most deposit disputes and keeps your Elwood RV rental experience smooth start to finish.
