Campgrounds and RV parks near Northwest Ithaca, NY

Waterfall hiking is the dominant draw. Winding trails at Robert H Treman State Park follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, with nine miles of hiking trails and a stream-fed pool beneath a waterfall for swimming. Buttermilk Falls State Park has ten waterfalls on park grounds, including its 165-foot namesake, plus a natural pool at the lower park. Cayuga Lake anchors the water-based activities. Myers Park offers lake swimming, a boat launch, and paddling on Cayuga Lake, with kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals available on site in season. Fishing is popular along the lakeshore and in the park streams. Families with kids often mix park time with in-town stops. Downtown Ithaca, Cornell University, and the Cayuga wine trail are all within a short drive, and Watkins Glen State Park is within reach for a day trip.

The main camping season runs from mid-May through mid-October. Private parks such as Spruce Row and Pinecreek generally run from early May into October, and state-park campgrounds around Ithaca follow a similar window, opening in mid-May and closing in mid-October. Vehicle entry fees at Robert H Treman are collected from April through mid-November, and the park itself stays open dawn to dusk year-round for day use. Summer is peak season for both crowds and swimming. Designated swimming areas are open daily from late June through Labor Day weekend, though closures can occur due to water quality, weather, or lifeguard availability. July and August weekends fill up early, and holiday weekends often carry minimum-stay requirements. Fall brings foliage, cooler nights, and thinner crowds, but the guarded swimming areas close after Labor Day. Winter is cold and snowy in the Ithaca area, with lake-effect snow common; most campgrounds are closed, though day-use trails at the state parks remain accessible when conditions allow.

State-park campgrounds around Ithaca are wooded and family-oriented, with a mix of electric and non-electric sites. Robert H Treman has about 72 sites, with 11 offering electric hookups, plus a dump station, showers, flush toilets, and a playground on site. Site levelness varies, and reviewers note some sites are tight and uneven, so bring leveling blocks. Buttermilk Falls has around 25 campsites and rustic cabins, with no site hookups and a maximum RV length of about 20 feet, so larger rigs should look to private parks instead. Spruce Row is a full-service private park with a swimming pool, playgrounds, mini-golf, hiking trails, and a fishing pond. Pinecreek Campground offers wooded sites with a mix of electric, water, and sewer hookups. Pets are welcome at most sites. Proof of rabies vaccination is required at check-in, with a maximum of 2 pets per site, and pets must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
