Campgrounds near South Hill
South Hill sits on the southern edge of Ithaca in New York's Finger Lakes region, putting RV travellers within a short drive of two major state-park campgrounds and several private and municipal options along Cayuga Lake. The terrain is defined by steep glacial gorges, waterfalls, and forested hillsides, with the lake itself running north from downtown Ithaca.
Buttermilk Falls State Park and Robert H Treman State Park both sit within a few miles of South Hill and function as the primary public camping options, connected by a trail network through the gorge-rich landscape. The Buttermilk campground has 25 wooded campsites accommodating tents or small camping units up to 20 feet, plus eighteen rustic cabins.
For lakefront camping, Myers Park lies on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake in Lansing, about twenty minutes north. Private options include Pinecreek Campground and Spruce Row Campground, the latter positioned on higher ground west of the lake. Together these sites give RV travellers a range of choices, from rustic state-park loops to full-service private grounds.
Things to do near South Hill
Waterfall hiking anchors most itineraries. At Robert H Treman State Park, trails follow the gorge past twelve waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, with nine miles of trail and a stream-fed swimming pool beneath a waterfall. Buttermilk Falls State Park offers a shorter but equally dramatic gorge climb alongside its 165-foot namesake cascade, with a natural swimming area at the base.
Cayuga Lake drives the water-based side of the trip. Myers Park has nineteen sites with electric and water hookups, a dump station, and a marina providing boat slip rental, dry dock storage, and boat launching. Downtown Ithaca, Cornell University, and the Cayuga wine trail are all within easy driving range, making South Hill a workable base for a mix of hiking, swimming, boating, and winery days.

The state-park campgrounds operate on a defined season. Robert H Treman is open from mid-May through early November, and Buttermilk Falls runs a similar spring-through-fall window. Private grounds track the same pattern, with Spruce Row typically operating May through Columbus Day.
Summer is the busiest stretch, with heavy day-use traffic at the gorge trails and swimming holes; the designated swimming area at Treman generally runs late June through Labor Day. Late September and early October bring cool days, chilly nights, and foliage that turns the gorges gold and red, with thinner crowds and fewer bugs than in summer. Spring runoff makes the waterfalls dramatic but leaves the gorge trails muddy.
Winter closes the campgrounds entirely. Day-use access to the parks continues for hiking and viewing frozen falls, but RV travellers should plan trips between late spring and late fall. Reservations should be locked in well ahead of foliage weekends and July holiday periods.

Alexander was extraordinarily helpful and truly went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful time. He responded quickly and was very pleasant to interact with. Perfect RV to rent for our family of 5. Plenty of sleeping space. Very clean RV!!! I chose the delivery option, which made it so easy. Alex showed up exactly when he said and set everything up for us. He was very thorough showing us how everything works, etc. I would 100 percent recommend this RV. We will be renting from him again in the future!

Anthony was excellent to communicate with. The Koala trailer filled out needs at the Pocano race weekend. Good mechanical, no leaks, hauled well behind my 1500 Denali. I'll look this one up again if we go to Pocano or The Glen.

How to book near South Hill
New York state-park campgrounds use ReserveAmerica. Campsites can be booked up to 11 months in advance, with reservations required at least 14 days ahead of arrival for online bookings; walk-ins and same-day reservations are permitted on campsites when availability allows. A maximum of two sleeping tents, or one camping unit and one small tent, is permitted per site.
Cabin rules are stricter. Cabins require a two-night minimum during non-peak season, a three-night minimum on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day weekends, and a seven-night Saturday-to-Saturday minimum during peak season, which runs late June through late August.
Myers Park is booked through the Town of Lansing Recreation portal, and Spruce Row and Pinecreek Campground take reservations directly through their own websites.
What to expect near South Hill
State-park sites lean rustic. Robert H Treman has 70 campsites accommodating tents and RVs plus 14 rustic cabins, with picnic tables and fire rings at each site, electric hookups at select sites, and modern restrooms with showers, a dump station, and potable water. Cabins are simple structures without bedding, cookware, or full kitchens, so campers should come prepared.
Rig size matters. Buttermilk Falls limits campsites to units up to 20 feet, and non-electric sites at Treman involve tight turns between trees. Larger rigs will find easier access at private grounds like Spruce Row and at the lakeside sites at Myers Park, where most pads are long and roughly 35 feet wide with 30-amp electric and water.
Pets are welcome at state-park campsites with a maximum of two per site, kept on a six-foot leash, and proof of rabies vaccination required at check-in.

Good news: for almost every RV rental in South Hill, NY, your standard driver license is all you need. Only oversized Class A coaches over 26,000 pounds GVWR require an R endorsement, and those are rare on the platform. Treman State Park allow up to two leashed pets at campsites with proof of rabies vaccination, and the multi-use trails at nearby Hammond Hill State Forest are a dog-walking favorite. The Ithaca Dog Park on Pier Road off Route 13 is a great off-leash break. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, then pack a towel for muddy paws after gorge hikes.

parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time to take an RV trip from South Hill, NY?

Summer (June to August) brings warm highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, perfect for swimming at Buttermilk Falls' natural pool. Early fall, mid-September through mid-October, is the local insider favorite: highs in the 60s, fewer bugs, and Finger Lakes foliage that explodes in red and gold along Cayuga Lake. Most New York state park campgrounds open around May 15 and close by Columbus Day weekend, so plan accordingly. Pro tip: book your campervan rental South Hill for the Ithaca Apple Harvest Festival in late September for an unbeatable fall trip.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Finger Lakes?
You'll do great, and you're not on your own. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation and walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, hookups, slides, tanks, and driving systems before you pull away. For a first time renting an RV in the Ithaca area, choose a Class B campervan or smaller Class C, which handle like a big van on routes such as Route 13 and Route 79. Hosts are reachable by message throughout your trip, and you can ask questions before you even book. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop around the Ithaca Mall parking lot off Triphammer Road before heading to the gorge parks, and you'll feel confident in 20 minutes.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-manuals-and-practice-testsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 96B, a dead battery at Taughannock Falls, or a lockout at Robert H. Treman is just one phone call away. Your host is also reachable by message and can help troubleshoot common issues, since they know their RV inside and out. RVezy support is available before, during, and after every trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV VIN, plate, and the roadside assistance number on day one so you have everything ready if you need help in a hurry.

Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and their insurance, so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if you're crossing into Ontario via the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, ask the host for the vehicle's registration paperwork in advance.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripHow much should I budget for fuel on a South Hill, NY RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables on any RV trip, and planning ahead helps a lot. Gas prices in the Ithaca area have ranged from about $3.40 to $4.60 per gallon recently, tracking close to the New York State average. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches usually run 6 to 10 MPG. For a 300-mile loop through Watkins Glen, Seneca Lake wineries, and back to Ithaca, expect $90 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: the BJ's Wholesale on Route 13 and Mirabito stations on South Meadow Street often have the lowest prices, and you can pre-check with the GasBuddy app.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=NYHow far in advance should I book a campground near South Hill, NY?
For peak summer and fall foliage weekends, book your campsite as soon as possible. New York State Parks like Buttermilk Falls, Robert H. Treman, and Taughannock Falls open reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and they fill up first for July, August, and Columbus Day weekend. Private campgrounds like Spruce Row and Pine Creek typically open bookings in early spring. Same-day reservations at state parks are allowed until 3 p.m. on the arrival day for campsites, which is a nice safety net. Pro tip: if your dates are sold out, set a cancellation alert through Campnab or ReserveAmerica, because cancellations happen daily at popular sites like the new loop at Robert H. Treman.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/buttermilk-falls-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=182What are the driving conditions like around South Hill and Ithaca?
Driving around South Hill is manageable, but a little local knowledge goes a long way. The hills around Ithaca are steep, with Route 79 (Slaterville Road) and Route 96B (Danby Road) climbing in and out of town with grades that can challenge larger rigs. Cayuga Lake's western shore (Route 89) is scenic but narrow in spots. Winters bring lake-effect snow from November through March, with average annual snowfall around 63 inches, so cold-weather trips need extra prep. Watch posted bridge clearances, since New York's maximum legal RV height is 13 feet 6 inches. Pro tip: smaller Class B or Class C rigs are perfect for navigating Ithaca's hilly terrain, and most RVezy listings show exact dimensions on the listing page.
dot.ny.gov/portal/page/portal/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/511What amenities do campgrounds near South Hill, NY actually have?
Most campgrounds near South Hill cover the essentials, but amenities do vary. State parks like Buttermilk Falls and Robert H. Treman offer 30-amp electric hookups, modern restrooms with hot showers, dump stations near the entrance, potable water fill, and picnic tables with fire rings at every site. Private parks like Spruce Row, Pine Creek, and the KOA in Watkins Glen go further with full hookups (water, electric, sewer), 50-amp service, Wi-Fi, laundry, propane refills, and pools. State parks typically lack sewer hookups, so plan to dump on the way out. Pro tip: Spruce Row Campground has one of the most convenient dump stations in Tompkins County, even letting non-guests pay to use it on travel days.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/robert-h-treman-state-parkWhat's inside a typical RV rental in South Hill, NY?
Even a modest motorhome rental South Hill comes loaded with creature comforts. Most RVezy rentals in the Ithaca area include a queen or full bed, a convertible dinette or bunk for extra sleepers, a kitchen with a fridge, propane stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, propane furnace, and a fresh water tank. Class C and Class A units often include a generator for off-grid power, a TV, and rear cameras. Wi-Fi is usually BYO via your phone hotspot, since cell coverage is solid around Ithaca but spotty in the deeper Finger Lakes hills. Each listing shows seatbelts available for travel, important when picking a family RV trip South Hill rig.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with my South Hill RV rental?
RVezy hosts in the South Hill area make customizing your trip easy. Common add-ons include camp chairs, outdoor tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators on towables, Wi-Fi boosters, bike racks, and grills. Many hosts charge a flat fee for each, while delivery is typically priced by distance from the host location. Mileage allowances vary by listing, with daily limits typically ranging from 100 to 200 miles included and additional miles billed at a per-mile rate. Some hosts offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage. You can pick up at the host location or request delivery to your campground. Pro tip: review the add-ons section carefully before booking your RV camping South Hill trip, since bundling at booking is usually cheaper than asking later.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Hill%2C%20New%20YorkHow do payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in South Hill, NY?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book a campervan rental South Hill or any RVezy rental, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is placed as a pre-authorization hold on your card before pickup, with the amount set by the host and shown on the listing. As long as the RV is returned in the same condition, that hold is released after your trip, typically within a few days. To avoid issues, do a thorough video walk-through with the host at pickup and again at drop-off, and document the fuel level and tank status. Pro tip: keep fuel and dump receipts, since they help if any post-trip questions come up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I park my RV overnight at rest areas or in Ithaca?
You've got options, but Ithaca is not a great place for overnight street parking in an RV. New York State Department of Transportation rest areas have a 3-hour limit for non-commercial vehicles, and Thruway service areas cap stays at 4 hours, so they work for a quick break but not a full night. Instead, where to park an RV in South Hill overnight is at a real campground: Buttermilk Falls State Park (1.5 miles away), Robert H. Treman (4 miles), or Spruce Row (10 miles) are your best bets. Walmart on Elmira Road does not officially permit overnight RV stays, so call ahead. Pro tip: Harvest Hosts members can stay overnight free at participating Finger Lakes wineries near Seneca Lake.
