Overview of campgrounds near Southport
Southport sits just south of Elmira in New York's Southern Tier, within easy driving range of the Finger Lakes, the Chemung River Valley, and the Corning-Watkins Glen corridor. RV renters use the area as a base for waterfall hikes, wineries along Seneca Lake, and stops at the Corning Museum of Glass, with most campgrounds clustered north and northwest of town along the I-86 corridor.
Options range from state-park camping to full-service private parks. North - Newtown Battlefield State Park is a 372-acre park that features 18 campsites accommodating tents and trailers up to 40 feet, 5 rustic cabins, and multiple pavilions. Gardner Hill Campground in nearby Lowman is a smaller private park geared to RVs and tents.
Further north, Ferenbaugh Camping and Recreation Area sits on 274 open and wooded acres with a 40-foot-wide creek, nature trails and a fish pond, offering 115 wooded and 30 pull-thru campsites for RVs, campers or tents, with slideouts and big rigs welcome. The Watkins Glen / Corning KOA Resort and Watkins Glen State Park round out the closest choices for travelers heading toward the gorge and Seneca Lake.
Things to do near Southport campgrounds
The headline attraction is Watkins Glen State Park, the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks, where the glen's stream descends roughly 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs and generates 19 waterfalls within two miles. The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade, with rim trails overlooking the gorge. The Gorge Trail typically opens in spring and closes in mid-fall.
At Newtown Battlefield, families can walk marked trails on a Revolutionary War site. The entire battlefield, about 2,100 acres, was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965. Other nearby draws include the Corning Museum of Glass, the National Soaring Museum at Harris Hill, and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
On-site amenities help on rainy days. Ferenbaugh has a swimming pool, a mini-golf course, playgrounds, and volleyball courts.

Newtown Battlefield State Park operates seasonally from mid-May through mid-October with reservations available through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance. Watkins Glen State Park's campground is typically open from late spring through early fall. Ferenbaugh is typically open from early May through the end of October.
Summer is peak. Mid-June to August are the busiest times at Watkins Glen, especially on weekends, so plan to arrive early in the day before the parking lots fill up, or go midweek. NASCAR weekends at Watkins Glen International can also spike demand on nearby sites.
Spring and early fall are quieter and cooler, with strong waterfall flow after snowmelt and rain. The area has a humid continental climate with strong seasonal contrasts: warm and fairly wet summers, and cold snowy winters, with February usually the driest month. Most private and state-park sites close for winter, so travelers planning a shoulder-season trip should confirm directly with the operator.
How to book campgrounds near Southport
New York state-park sites are booked through ReserveAmerica. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites only, reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Reservations are available up to 9 months in advance, with sites requiring a 1-night minimum stay and cabins requiring 2 nights, and a maximum stay of 14 consecutive nights.
At Watkins Glen State Park, only some loops carry electric hookups, so RV renters needing power should target those loops early. Private parks such as Ferenbaugh, Gardner Hill and the Watkins Glen / Corning KOA Resort are booked directly through the operator's website or by phone. Call ahead in shoulder season to confirm hookup availability and big-rig access.
What to expect at campgrounds near Southport
State-park campgrounds in this area are wooded and rustic. Sites are tidy and mowed, with a trash can at each site and a combination grill and fire ring. Bathhouses with hot showers are standard, and dump stations are available, but not every loop has hookups. At Newtown Battlefield, park amenities include showers, a dump station, playground, and picnic areas, all with the benefit of scenic views overlooking the Chemung River Valley.
Private parks lean more RV-friendly. Ferenbaugh's pull-thrus have 30- and 50-amp electric, water, sewer and cable TV, while wooded and creekside sites have 20- and 30-amp electric and water service.
Ticks are present in wooded sections, so heed the signage and check for them. Cell service is generally reliable along I-86 but can be spotty at hilltop sites.
