Camping near Akron, Pennsylvania
Akron is a small borough in northern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, positioned in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. RV travelers use it as a practical base for exploring Amish farmland, covered bridges, and family attractions in and around Lancaster, while staying within a short drive of Hershey and the lower Susquehanna River.
The surrounding area is dense with private RV parks and family camping resorts rather than public campgrounds, so most sites are reserved directly through the operator. Closer-in options include Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata, a wooded property on 110 acres with water and electric sites plus full-hookup B sites, along with Starlite Camping Resort, Hickory Run Family Camping Resort, Red Run Campground, and Dutch Cousin Campground.
Because Lancaster County is rolling farmland rather than mountain wilderness, sites tend to be open, grassy, and big-rig friendly, with pool and playground amenities aimed at families. Public land camping requires a longer drive to Pennsylvania state parks, which are managed by DCNR and reserved through the state's official reservation portal.
Things to do around Akron
The main draw is Amish Country. Families visit Dutch Wonderland amusement park, tour working farms, ride horse-drawn buggies, and browse markets and outlet shopping along Route 30. The Ephrata Cloister, a preserved 18th-century religious community, sits minutes from Akron and offers guided historical tours.
Outdoor options are strong in every direction. Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, north of Akron, is known for spring snow goose migrations and quiet hiking. Muddy Run Park to the south has a reservoir with kayaking, fishing, and trails. Covered bridges, rail-trails such as the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, and the Susquehanna River corridor add day-trip mileage for cyclists and paddlers traveling with an RV.
Hersheypark and Chocolate World are roughly forty-five minutes west for a full theme-park day.

The Akron camping season runs primarily from spring through fall. Many private campgrounds in Lancaster County open in April and close in late October, while a handful operate year round. Woodcrest Retreat enforces a two-night minimum on weekends and a three-night minimum on holiday weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which is typical for the region.
Summer is the peak family season and books furthest out, especially around Independence Day and any weekend tied to Dutch Wonderland or Hersheypark. Expect heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, with August among the wettest months locally.
Fall is a strong value window. Foliage across the Amish farmland peaks in mid to late October, harvest markets are in full swing, and daytime temperatures stay comfortable for grilling and campfires. Winter camping options are limited: cold nights, occasional snow, and reduced amenities at seasonal parks make year-round properties the only practical choice.

How to book campsites near Akron
Most campgrounds near Akron are privately owned and take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Woodcrest Retreat, Starlite Camping Resort, Hickory Run Family Camping Resort, Red Run Campground, and Dutch Cousin Campground each set their own opening dates, deposit rules, and cancellation windows, so confirm policies at the time of booking. Holiday weekends and any dates tied to Dutch Wonderland fill earliest.
For public-land alternatives, Pennsylvania state parks and state forests use the DCNR reservation system, reachable online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Most sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance, to noon of the day of arrival. During the summer season from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, a two-night stay is required when a Saturday is included, and the maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights.
What to expect on the ground
Campgrounds near Akron are family-oriented and social rather than remote or backcountry. Expect grassy, mostly level sites, paved or gravel roads inside the park, and shared amenities such as swimming pools, playgrounds, camp stores, and organized weekend activities. Full hookups are common at the larger resorts; smaller retreats such as Woodcrest Retreat offer water and electric with a subset of full-hookup sites plus a dump station.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across northern Lancaster County, and grocery, propane, and RV supply stops are easy to reach in Ephrata, Lititz, and Lancaster city. Roads through Amish areas are narrow and shared with horse-drawn buggies, so plan slower drive times and avoid tight back-road shortcuts in a larger rig. Quiet hours, leashed-pet rules, and speed limits inside campgrounds are enforced.
