Campgrounds and RV parks near Altamont, PA

Locust Lake anchors most outdoor plans in the area. The 52-acre lake supports trout fishing, swimming at a sandy beach typically open from late May to mid-September, and non-powered or electric-powered boating, with rentals available on site. The park has more than six miles of trails ranging from easy lakeside walks to steeper climbs on Locust Mountain, plus mountain biking and picnicking. A state launching permit or boat registration is required to put in a boat. Blue Mountain and the Appalachian Trail run through southern Schuylkill County for day hikes, and the historic borough of Jim Thorpe and Lehigh Gorge State Park are within driving range for whitewater rafting, scenic rail rides, and rail-trail biking. Private resorts in the area add pools, playgrounds, and weekend programming for families traveling with kids.

The region has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, which shapes the camping calendar. Locust Lake State Park's campground is generally open from late March to mid-October, with the swimming beach staffed from late May to mid-September. Outside those dates the park grounds stay open sunrise to sunset for day use, but overnight camping winds down. Late spring brings reliable trout fishing as the lake is stocked seasonally, cooler nights, and lower bug pressure than midsummer. June through August is peak season: warm days, swimming, full programming, and the heaviest reservation demand at both state-park and private campgrounds. September and early October deliver fall color across Locust Mountain and Blue Mountain with cooler nights well suited to RV travel. Winter shifts the area toward cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and hunting, but most overnight camping in the immediate area is closed and travelers should plan accordingly.

At Locust Lake State Park Campground, all 282 sites sit in a wooded setting and include a parking pad, picnic table, fire ring, and a cleared area for camping equipment. Eighty-eight sites have electric hookups; the rest are non-electric. Amenities include potable water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, a sanitary dump station, trash and recycling collection, a camp store with wood, ice, and bait, and boat rentals near the launch. Three playgrounds are spread through the camping loops. Cell service is described as fair and can be unpredictable, so downloading the park map before arrival is wise. Private campgrounds in the surrounding area typically offer full-hookup RV sites, pools, playgrounds, and cabin rentals, with a more resort-style feel than the state park.
