Athens camping overview
Athens sits at the confluence of the Chemung and Susquehanna rivers in Bradford County, on the Pennsylvania-New York border. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Endless Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania and the southern Finger Lakes region of New York, with campgrounds ranging from full-hookup family resorts to rustic state park sites.
Close-in private options include Pine Cradle Lake Family Campground, an 83-acre park in the Endless Mountains built around a private lake, with full-hookup RV sites offering 30 and 50 amp service, pull-thrus, and lakeside spots. Gardner Hill Campground offers another nearby option for RV renters staying on the Pennsylvania side.
For travelers willing to drive north across the state line, the 372-acre Newtown Battlefield State Park offers 18 campsites accommodating tents and trailers up to 40 feet, plus 5 rustic cabins. Further west, Robert H. Treman State Park encompasses the Enfield Glen gorge with 12 waterfalls and offers 70 campsites for tents and RVs plus 14 rustic cabins. Falling Waters Campground home of Buttermilk Falls sits south in Sullivan County for those combining an Endless Mountains loop.
Things to do near Athens
The region combines water recreation, waterfall hikes, and Revolutionary War history. Lake activities at Pine Cradle Lake Family Campground include kayaking and fishing on the private lake, which makes it a strong pick for families with younger kids who need water time between outings.
Waterfall hiking anchors the day trips. Robert H. Treman's gorge trail follows Enfield Creek past 12 waterfalls including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, with a stream-fed swimming pool beneath a waterfall for natural refreshment during summer months. Falling Waters Campground offers scenic walking trails that lead to Buttermilk Falls.
History travelers can explore the battlefield preserved at Newtown, and the surrounding Bradford County countryside offers wineries, farm stands, and river access along the Susquehanna. Watkins Glen, Taughannock Falls, and Ithaca sit within a reasonable drive west.

Camping season in this part of the northern Appalachians runs roughly mid-May through mid-October, driven by state park operating windows and freeze risk at higher elevations. Robert H. Treman State Park operates from mid-May through early November, and Newtown Battlefield operates seasonally from mid-May through mid-October. Sites at both fill early for July and August weekends and for fall-foliage weekends in late September and early October.
Summer brings warm, humid days ideal for swimming and paddling, but afternoon thunderstorms are common. Spring can be wet, and shoulder-season nights drop into the 30s Fahrenheit. Fall delivers reliable foliage color across the Endless Mountains and Finger Lakes by early to mid-October.
Private campgrounds extend the calendar. Falling Waters Campground home of Buttermilk Falls and Pine Cradle Lake typically operate on longer schedules than the state parks, giving RV renters late-fall or early-spring options when public sites are closed. Winter camping requires cold-weather-rated rigs and freeze protection for water lines.
How to book campsites near Athens
New York state parks in the region use ReserveAmerica; same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, and reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267. Campsite reservations may be booked 9 months in advance for a 1-night minimum stay, with a maximum of 2 sleeping tents, or 1 camping unit and 1 small tent per site.
Cabin rules run stricter. Cabins require a 2-night minimum stay during non-peak season, a 3-night minimum on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day holiday weekends, and a 7 or 14-night Saturday-to-Saturday minimum during peak season.
Private campgrounds like Pine Cradle Lake and Falling Waters take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Book summer holiday weekends and October foliage dates months out.
What to expect
Sites vary widely by property. Pine Cradle Lake offers full-hookup campsites with 30 and 50 amp service, including pull-thrus and lakeside sites for large units, which suits larger Class A and fifth-wheel rentals. Falling Waters features 64 well-equipped campsites complete with electric, water, and sewer hook-ups, plus cabin rentals and a convenient on-site dump station.
State park sites are more rustic. Sites at Robert H. Treman feature picnic tables and fire rings, with electric hookups available at select sites, and the park provides restrooms with showers, a dump station, and potable water. Non-electric sites there involve tight turns between trees, so measure your rig before booking. Cell service is spotty in the Endless Mountains, and ticks are present in wooded areas; check daily.
