RV camping near Atlas, Pennsylvania
Atlas sits in Northumberland County in central Pennsylvania, minutes from Elysburg and the anthracite-coal belt towns of Shamokin and Mount Carmel. The area draws RV renters mainly because of Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, a family-owned amusement park and campground that opened in 1926 and is the United States' largest free-admission park. Campgrounds cluster within a short drive of the park and along the wooded ridges that rise toward Columbia and Schuylkill counties.
On-site RV camping is available at Knoebels Resort and Campground, which sits on the park grounds itself. Nearby private options include Knoebels Lake Glory Campground, Springbrook Family Campground in Catawissa, Camp-A-While in Hegins, and J and D Campgrounds. Springbrook lies about 9 miles from Knoebels Amusement Resort near Catawissa, Pennsylvania.
Most parks in the region are seasonal, tied to the amusement-park calendar and Pennsylvania's cold winters. RV renters should plan around a spring-to-fall window and expect quick fill-up on Knoebels event weekends.
Things to do near Atlas
The main draw is Knoebels itself. The park offers more than 60 rides and attractions, including thrill rides, roller coasters, kids rides, miniature golf, an arcade, a bald eagle habitat, a carousel, a coal mining museum and a giant spring-fed pool, and admission and parking are free. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays each October, the park operates Hallo-Fun Weekends with activities like pumpkin painting and cookie decorating.
Beyond the park, the region has strong day-trip hiking. Ricketts Glen State Park is one of the most scenic areas in Pennsylvania and covers 13,193 acres in Luzerne, Sullivan, and Columbia counties, and the full loop of the Falls Trail is 7.2 miles if hiking both the upper and lower sections. The Susquehanna River corridor around Sunbury is close by for fishing and boat launches, and quieter state forest roads in the surrounding ridges add options for cyclists and anglers.

The camping season in this part of Pennsylvania is short and clearly defined. Springbrook Family Campground is open April 1 through October 31, and the Knoebels amusement park itself operates April through September, with limited days in October and January for seasonal events. Most private parks in the area close for the winter and lock their gates once the season ends.
Spring brings mud season and higher water in area creeks, and stream-side sites at parks like Springbrook can be damp after heavy rain. Late May through early September is peak family season, and weekends near Knoebels event dates book out early. Fall is the sweet spot for RV renters who want cooler nights, foliage, and lower crowds, with peak color usually landing in mid-October.
Renters targeting Knoebels holiday weekends, Fourth of July, or Hallo-Fun should reserve well ahead. Winter RV camping is not a practical option in the immediate Atlas area, since area campgrounds close for the cold months.

This was our family’s first time renting an RV after years of tent camping, and it was a great experience overall. Michael was an excellent host. He delivered the RV to our campsite, had everything set up and ready to go, and took the time to explain how everything worked. As first-time RV renters, that made the experience stress-free and much less intimidating. The RV itself was exactly what we needed for our family of four. It was spacious enough to sleep comfortably, kept us cool during the hot weather, kept us dry through the rain, and everything worked as expected. We spent most of our time outdoors and primarily used the RV for sleeping, and it was perfect for that. The only reason I’m mentioning this is so future renters know what to expect. When we first arrived, there was a noticeable odor inside the RV. As the trip went on, it seemed to be coming from the bathroom/holding tank area. When I mentioned it to Michael at pickup, he was very open about it and explained that it’s something he has to deep clean every few rentals to eliminate the smell. I appreciated his honesty, but since it’s a known issue rather than a one-time occurrence, I think it’s fair for future renters to be aware of it. Other than that, we had a fantastic experience. Michael was friendly, responsive, and easy to work with, and I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again

Michael was wonderful! Answered all my questions quickly for a last minute trip. Camper was clean and had everything we needed!

How to book campgrounds near Atlas
Private parks in the area are booked directly with the operator rather than through a central portal. Knoebels Resort and Campground, Knoebels Lake Glory Campground, Springbrook Family Campground, Camp-A-While, and J and D Campgrounds each take their own reservations by phone or through their websites. Prime summer weekends at Knoebels are known to fill far in advance, so it is worth calling well ahead of the target date.
For state-park camping at Ricketts Glen or Locust Lake, reservations go through the Pennsylvania DCNR reservation system. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival. Popular waterfront and full-hookup sites clear quickly once the window opens.
When booking an RV rental, confirm site length, hookup type, and whether a specific park allows delivery of a rented unit before finalizing the reservation.
What to expect on-site
Hookup levels vary by park. Springbrook offers 105 full-hookup sites with water, 30/50 amp electric, and direct sewer, along with a 3-5 foot inground pool, playground and toddler area, fishing creek and pond, basketball court, and a game room with laundry and bathhouse access. Knoebels-area sites and other private parks generally provide electric hookups, potable water fills, and a central dump station, though full sewer at the site is not universal.
Sites in the area are generally wooded and can be uneven, so plan to level the RV and bring longer sewer hoses for rear-utility pads. Cell coverage is workable in most spots but weaker deep in the ridges. Pets are welcome at most parks with standard leash and cleanup rules.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Atlas, PA
How much does an RV rental in Atlas, PA cost?
Good news: Atlas sits in one of the most affordable corners of Central Pennsylvania for RV travel. Expect roughly $90 to $150 per night for travel trailers, $150 to $225 for Class C motorhomes, and $225 to $400 for larger Class A rigs when you rent an RV in Atlas. Because Atlas is a small Northumberland County community right next to Elysburg and Mount Carmel, you'll find cheap RV rental Atlas options that beat what you'd pay near Philadelphia or the Poconos. Pro tip: book Sunday through Thursday and avoid Knoebels' peak July and August weekends to save 20 to 30 percent. Booking 8 to 10 weeks ahead also locks in the best inventory and lowest nightly rates.
visitpa.com/regions/valleys-of-the-susquehannaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Atlas, PA?
Great news for first-time renters: your regular driver's license is all you need for RV rental in Atlas. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, no matter the size. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and you'll verify your ID quickly through the platform before pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. That's it. Most guests are surprised how simple the paperwork is, leaving more time to plan your stops at Knoebels and the Susquehanna River Valley.
dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxIs my RV rental in Atlas covered if something goes wrong?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on enjoying your trip. The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle during your rental, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host). It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection and peace of mind for renters exploring Atlas, Elysburg, and the surrounding Coal Region. If you get a flat on Route 54 or need a jump-start at the campground, one call gets help dispatched any time of day. That safety net is why so many first-timers feel confident booking their Atlas RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Atlas RV rental?
Yes, plans change and RVezy has you covered. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, which includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your Atlas RV rental with confidence. After that window, refund details depend on how close to the trip you cancel, and special circumstances like severe weather are reviewed by the RVezy team. Because the policy is set at the platform level, it is not displayed on each individual listing. Pro tip: reach out to RVezy support as soon as your plans shift, and book early so you have maximum flexibility heading into peak Knoebels season.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Atlas?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Atlas options. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see motorhomes and trailers that welcome your dog, and message the host to confirm any size or breed notes. The good news for travelers: Knoebels Campground in nearby Elysburg welcomes leashed dogs in designated pet-friendly loops, and dogs are permitted in many areas of the free-admission amusement park (service animals welcome throughout). Weiser State Forest trails just south of Atlas also offer leashed-dog hiking through quiet hardwood ridges. Pro tip: pack a long tie-out, collapsible water bowl, and your pup's vaccination records to keep check-in smooth.
knoebels.com/stay/knoebels-campground/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Atlas?
Yes, RV delivery Atlas is one of the most popular ways to travel here, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will drive the motorhome or trailer directly to Knoebels Campground in Elysburg (about 4 miles from Atlas), Lake Glory Campground, or even a friend's driveway in Mount Carmel or Shamokin. They'll level it, connect water, sewer and electric, run through a full orientation, and pick it up when your trip ends. That means no towing, no backing into a tight site, and no setup stress. Pro tip: filter for Delivery on RVezy, then message hosts with your campsite number so they can confirm delivery fees, which usually run $2 to $4 per mile round trip.
knoebels.com/stay/knoebels-campground/How far can I drive on my Atlas RV trip?
You've got real road-trip range from Atlas. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for exploring deeper into Pennsylvania. From Atlas, popular destinations include Knoebels Amusement Resort (about 4 miles), Ricketts Glen State Park with its 21 waterfalls (about 35 miles north), Williamsport and Little League Baseball's home (about 50 miles), Hershey Park (about 80 miles south), and the Pocono Mountains (about 75 miles east). Pro tip: message the host with your itinerary, and many will boost your mileage cap or waive fees on longer trips.

You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Atlas. The standout is Knoebels Campground in Elysburg (about 4 miles away), with 50-amp full hookups, a free shuttle to America's largest free-admission amusement park, and pull-through sites for big rigs up to 65 feet. Lake Glory Campground, also part of Knoebels, sits on a quiet swimming lake. Just north, Ricketts Glen State Park offers 120 wooded sites with electric hookups near the famous Falls Trail. Locust Lake State Park near Barnesville (about 20 miles east) has lakefront electric sites perfect for kayaking. Pro tip: Knoebels' Park Campground books a year in advance for summer weekends, so reserve early or aim for weekdays.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LocustLakeStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Atlas?
Late April through October is prime time for an RV road trip from Atlas, and each season offers something special. May and June bring 65 to 80°F days, blooming mountain laurel (Pennsylvania's state flower), and quiet campgrounds before summer crowds. July and August are warm and humid (80 to 88°F) and align with peak Knoebels season. September and October are the local insider's pick: crisp 50 to 70°F days, the Coal Region's brilliant red-and-gold foliage, and Knoebels' Hallo-Fun weekends. Winters are cold (20 to 35°F) with possible snow, and most campgrounds close from November to mid-April. Pro tip: visit the third weekend of October for peak fall color along Route 54 toward Bear Gap.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay around Atlas?
You're going to do great, especially around Atlas. This is one of the easier regions in Pennsylvania for first time renting an RV because the roads are rural, traffic is light, and your host gives a thorough walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and dump procedures. Routes 54 and 61 around Atlas are wide two-lanes with gentle grades through the Coal Region, ideal for building confidence. If you're nervous, choose a Class C motorhome (drives like a big van) or pick RV delivery so the rig is parked and set up before you arrive. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot practice loop at the Mount Carmel Walmart before heading to your campsite.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I break down during my Atlas RV trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the protection plan, so help is just a phone call away whether you are parked at Knoebels, climbing toward Ricketts Glen, or cruising Interstate 80. The team can dispatch a tow, tire change, jump-start, or lockout service anywhere in Pennsylvania. Your host is also a phone or in-app message away for quick questions about the propane stove or awning. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Atlas, and snap a photo of your RV's VIN and license plate so you can share details fast if you ever need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Atlas, PA?
Atlas is a fantastic launch pad for an RV road trip from Atlas across the Mid-Atlantic. Head north 35 miles to Ricketts Glen State Park for a waterfall weekend, or 50 miles northwest to Williamsport for the Little League World Series and the Pennsylvania Lumber Heritage region. Drive 80 miles south to Hershey for chocolate-themed family fun, or about 75 miles east into the Pocono Mountains for lakes and the Delaware Water Gap. For a longer adventure, Niagara Falls is about 270 miles northwest via Interstate 80. International travel on RVezy rentals requires advance host approval, so confirm before planning any cross-border legs. Pro tip: a 4-night loop hitting Knoebels, Ricketts Glen, and Williamsport is the perfect Pennsylvania starter trip.
visitpa.com/region/pocono-mountainsWhat should I budget for fuel on a motorhome rental Atlas?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's manageable. Expect 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 for a Class C, 12 to 18 for a campervan rental Atlas, and 15 to 22 for the tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon and diesel slightly higher. A 200-mile weekend loop from Atlas to Ricketts Glen and back in a Class C averages around $60 to $80 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at Sheetz or Weis stations in Mount Carmel or Shamokin before heading into the mountains, where pumps are sparser and prices climb 20 to 40 cents per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Atlas?
Earlier is better, especially for summer. Knoebels Campground in Elysburg often books 9 to 12 months in advance for July and August weekends, so reserve the moment your dates are firm. Pennsylvania state park campgrounds like Ricketts Glen and Locust Lake open reservations 11 months out through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and prime weekends fill within hours. Private parks in the Susquehanna River Valley usually need 4 to 8 weeks of lead time. Pro tip: if summer is fully booked, target mid-September through mid-October. You'll often grab walk-up sites at Knoebels with cooler weather, fall foliage, and Hallo-Fun events in full swing.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Atlas, PA?
Driving around Atlas is refreshingly relaxed compared to most of the Northeast. You'll travel two-lane Routes 54, 61, and 487 through rolling Appalachian foothills with gentle grades and minimal traffic. The Coal Region's old mining roads have occasional patches and tight shoulders, so take curves slowly in a larger motorhome. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Northumberland County has one of the highest deer populations in Pennsylvania) and for coal trucks on weekdays. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, when most RV trips pause. Pro tip: avoid Routes 901 and 125 if you're driving a Class A, and stick to Route 61 north or Interstate 80 east for the smoothest, widest RV-friendly travel.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Atlas offer?
You'll find well-equipped campgrounds throughout the area. Knoebels Campground offers 50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups, a free dump station, bathhouses with hot showers, coin laundry, a camp store, and a shuttle to the amusement park. Ricketts Glen State Park provides 30-amp electric sites, modern restrooms, a dump station, and a swimming beach on Lake Jean. Locust Lake offers electric sites, flush toilets, and a fishing lake. For fresh water and dumping mid-trip, the Pilot Travel Center in Bloomsburg (about 18 miles north) has full RV service. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any campground, since dispersed and dry-camping options in Weiser State Forest don't include hookups.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/RickettsGlenStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Atlas?
You'll be impressed by how move-in ready these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental Atlas includes a queen or king bed, bunk or convertible sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for every passenger. Most rentals come with linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, and a propane tank ready to go. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and onboard generator for boondocking, and some hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on. Pro tip: check the listing photos for the floor plan and confirm sleeping arrangements with the host before booking your family RV trip Atlas.
visitpa.com/What add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Atlas?
Hosts make customizing your trip easy. Common add-ons for an Atlas RV trip include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($20 to $40), generators ($25 to $50 per night), propane refills, bike racks, and pet cleaning fees ($50 to $100). Pickup is typically at the host's home in Atlas, Mount Carmel, Elysburg, or Shamokin between 1 PM and 4 PM, with returns by 11 AM. Mileage caps usually range from 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some unlimited-mileage listings available. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during booking instead of adding them later. Hosts often discount packages, and one host bringing everything to your campsite saves a trip back into town.
visitcentralpa.org/How does payment and the security deposit work for an Atlas RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure on RVezy. You pay the full trip cost (rental, fees, and protection plan) through the platform when you book, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment and typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after a clean return. Choosing a higher-tier protection plan at checkout can lower your out-of-pocket exposure if something goes wrong. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV's interior and exterior at both pickup and return. That five-minute habit is the single best way to ensure a smooth deposit refund on your Atlas, PA rental.
