Campgrounds and RV parks near Auburn, PA

Outdoor activity centers on the Blue Mountain ridge and the Schuylkill River corridor. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a well-known raptor refuge, sits east of Auburn and is open year-round, with about eight miles of ridge-and-valley trails and a visitor center. The nearby Appalachian Trail offers day-hike access from several trailheads. Swatara State Park adds the Swatara Rail-Trail for cycling, plus fishing and non-powered boating on Swatara Creek. Locust Lake and Tuscarora State Parks provide lake swimming, fishing, and additional trails within roughly a half-hour drive. Families traveling with kids often pair camp time with Cabela's in Hamburg, Pennsylvania Dutch country attractions to the south, and Hersheypark to the southwest for a day trip out of the RV.

Most private campgrounds in the Auburn area operate on a seasonal calendar, with the main window running from April through late October. Pennsylvania state park campgrounds in this region, including Locust Lake, typically open in early April and close by mid-October, though the parks themselves remain open year-round for day use. Summer is peak season. June through August brings warm, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and the highest campground demand, so holiday weekends and Saturdays fill early. Late spring and early fall are quieter and often more comfortable for hiking, with cooler nights and fewer bugs. Winter conditions are cold and snowy in the Blue Mountain foothills. Water is usually shut off at private and state campgrounds during freezing months, and most seasonal parks are closed to overnight camping. RV travelers planning shoulder-season trips should confirm hookup availability, since electric-only or dry camping is common before mid-May and after mid-October.

Terrain around Auburn is wooded and hilly, so RV sites often sit under mature tree cover with mixed sun and shade. Roads into some smaller parks include tight turns and moderate grades, and larger Class A rigs and long fifth wheels should confirm site length and access before arrival. Most private parks in the area offer full or partial hookups, dump stations, laundry, pool access in summer, and family activities on weekends. Cell coverage is generally reliable near the interstates but can drop in valley pockets and inside some state park campgrounds. Black bears, deer, and biting insects are all part of the local outdoor experience. Store food inside the RV or in bear-resistant containers, and plan for ticks and mosquitoes from late spring through early fall.
