Camping near Bangor, Pennsylvania
Bangor sits in Northampton County in the Slate Belt region of eastern Pennsylvania, minutes from the Delaware River and the southern end of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Appalachian Trail crosses Kittatinny Mountain just west of town, and the Poconos rise to the north, putting a mix of river, ridge, and forest camping within a short drive.
The area works well as an RV base for families. Private campgrounds close to Bangor include Camp Charles Campgrounds, Hickory Lake Campground, Pocono Vacation Park, Delaware River Family Campground, and Driftstone on the Delaware. Options range from riverside sites with electric and water hookups to wooded family parks with pools, game rooms, and cabin rentals.
Access is straightforward from Interstate 80, US Route 209, and PA Route 33, with Lehigh Valley International Airport roughly an hour southwest and New York City about seventy miles east, making Bangor a practical stop for renters coming from either metro area.
Things to do around Bangor
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is the main draw, covering a long stretch of the Delaware River between Interstate 80 and Interstate 84. Families can paddle the river, swim at designated beaches such as Milford, Smithfield, and Turtle Beach on the New Jersey side, and hike to Raymondskill Falls, the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania. Note that the beaches are not lifeguarded, so swimming is at your own risk.
Hikers can access a long stretch of the Appalachian Trail inside the recreation area, including lookouts over the river gap from Mount Minsi on the Pennsylvania side and Mount Tammany in New Jersey. Bushkill Falls, a privately operated series of eight waterfalls in the Poconos, is a good half-day outing.
Further afield, Hickory Run State Park sits about forty minutes away with waterfall trails, and the historic Pocono town of Jim Thorpe offers scenic train rides, biking, and rafting.

Most campgrounds in the Bangor area operate seasonally, typically from April through October, with a small number of private parks open year-round. Spring brings cool nights, higher river flows, and blooming forests, but expect wet trails and lingering cold snaps into April.
Summer is the busiest season. Daytime highs usually reach the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Weekends at private campgrounds and the national recreation area fill early, especially around July 4 and Labor Day, so booking well ahead is important for holiday travel.
Fall is often the best window for RV renters. Foliage typically peaks in October in the Poconos, crowds thin after Labor Day, and daytime temperatures stay comfortable for hiking. Winter camping is limited, as most private parks close by late October and reopen in April, though the national recreation area itself stays open year-round for day use, including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Great weekend getaway!
Kami A. - Nov 2024
Great vehicle and friendly owners. This compact camper has a lot of creature comforts while allowing one to maneuver and park in regular parking lots. The van is really easy to drive and handles really nice. The beds were comfortable and IMO accommodate 2 adults (top bed) and 1 adult or 2 kids in the lower bed. We were able to use the bike rack, too, and that worked great for a road bike and mountain bike (I think 2 mountain bikes might not fit unless the handle bars were turned on 1 of them). We didn't use the, generator, heater, hot water, shower, sink, microwave or toilet so I can't comment on them but I wish we rented it longer so we could've taken advantage of all this van has to offer. We would absolutely rent again.

Great holiday weekend in Dalton's camper! He was an amazing host, and everything was as described. We had the camper delivered and picked up by Mike, who was also awesome! Thanks for a great weekend!
Stephanie H. - Sep 2026
Dalton's Jayco is the perfect option for a small family. There's plenty of sleeping options for the kids, and the tub is a great bonus for bath time. The camper is well maintained and everything was functional. Delivery and pick up to the site went smoothly. We're hoping it's available next year too!

How to book campgrounds near Bangor
Private campgrounds around Bangor, including Camp Charles Campgrounds, Hickory Lake Campground, Pocono Vacation Park, Delaware River Family Campground, and Driftstone on the Delaware, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Some lean heavily toward seasonal renters, so transient RV sites can be limited and worth calling about early.
For campgrounds inside Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, reservations are booked through Recreation.gov, generally up to six months in advance. Popular summer weekends can sell out the day the window opens.
River-access primitive sites use a zone permit system: visitors reserve a permit within one of five designated river zones and pick any available site within that zone on arrival. These sites are boat-in only and limited to one night per zone, so they suit multi-day paddling trips rather than RV stays.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Bangor is rolling and wooded, with campgrounds tucked into forested lots or set along the Delaware River. Expect a mix of gravel and grass sites. Full hookups are available at some private parks; others offer water and electric only, with dump stations on site.
Cell service is spotty once you drop into the river corridor, and coverage varies at nearby private parks. Download maps and reservations before arrival.
Bears, deer, and small wildlife are common, so use bear-aware food storage. Firewood from outside the park may not be brought in or transported across state lines, except heat-treated, certified bundled wood, a rule that applies to help slow the spread of invasive insects such as the Asian longhorned beetle. Most private campgrounds sell firewood on site.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Bangor, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Bangor, PA?
RV rental in Bangor is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Pocono Mountains and Delaware Water Gap region. On RVezy, you can typically find travel trailers starting around $80 to $140 per night, Class C motorhomes from $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A rigs from $200 to $350 per night. Since hosts set their own pricing, you can filter by budget to find a cheap RV rental in Bangor that matches your plans. Book mid-week stays in May or early June for the best rates before Pocono summer demand peaks, and look for hosts who include kitchen kits or camping gear to stretch your dollar even further.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bangor%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Bangor, PA?
A standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Bangor for the vast majority of rigs on RVezy. Pennsylvania only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on the platform falls comfortably under that threshold. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification happens right inside the booking flow. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit from your home auto association along with your home license and you are set to roll.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Bangor RV rental protected if something goes wrong on the trip?
Yes, every booking through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the winding Pocono backroads with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV and is built into your booking rather than an add-on you have to remember. During checkout you choose the coverage tier that fits your trip, which is a smart move when you are heading into mountain terrain or planning a longer Delaware Water Gap adventure. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it gives renters meaningful financial backup. Lock in your dates, pick your protection level, and focus on the fun.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Bangor RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear standardized cancellation policy to every reservation, including a grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates without second-guessing. Because RVezy manages cancellations (not the host), the same fair process applies whether you are renting a campervan in Bangor or a fifth wheel near Stroudsburg. If a host has to cancel on you, RVezy will refund your booking or help you rebook with travel credits. Full details are shown before you confirm payment, and the RVezy support team is available if your plans shift, making it easy to say yes to your Bangor RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Bangor, PA RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Bangor, and finding one is as easy as ticking the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area welcomes leashed pets on most trails (including the McDade Recreational Trail), and dog-friendly campgrounds like Driftstone on the Delaware and Dingmans Campground make settling in with your pup simple. Some hosts ask for a small pet cleaning fee, which you'll see clearly on the listing before you book. Pro tip: pack a tie-out, water bowl, and a towel for muddy paws after Bushkill Falls hikes, and your co-pilot will be set for the whole adventure.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Bangor?
Yes, RV delivery in Bangor is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free, especially if it is your first time renting. Many RVezy hosts will drop the rig off, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system at your campground of choice. Popular delivery destinations include Driftstone on the Delaware in Columbia, NJ and campgrounds within Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so a drop within 15 to 20 miles of Bangor tends to be the best value. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, message the host with your campsite info, and you can arrive to a fully set-up RV ready for s'mores.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bangor%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow far can I travel from Bangor in an RV, and what about mileage limits?
You have serious range from Bangor for a great RV road trip. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some list rigs with RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for longer loops. From Bangor you can reach the Delaware Water Gap in about 25 minutes, Jim Thorpe in roughly 1 hour, Philadelphia in about 90 minutes, the Catskills in around 2 hours, and Niagara Falls in roughly 6 hours. If you are planning a bigger Northeast circuit, message the host before booking to discuss a mileage package, or choose an unlimited-mileage listing to keep the odometer worry-free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bangor%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhere can I camp with an RV near Bangor, PA?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Bangor and the surrounding Pocono and Delaware Water Gap region. Top picks include Driftstone on the Delaware (about 15 minutes north in Columbia, NJ with riverfront full-hookup sites), Worthington State Forest Campground inside Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Dingmans Campground along the Delaware River with hookups and a boat launch, and Jim Thorpe Camping Resort about an hour west. For the best campgrounds near Bangor in fall foliage season, book at least 8 to 12 weeks ahead, since leaf-peepers from New York and Philly snap up sites quickly.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhen is the best time of year to take a Bangor RV trip?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time for an RV rental in Pennsylvania's Slate Belt, with each season offering something special. May and June bring mild 60 to 80 degree F days, blooming forests, and lighter crowds. July and August reach highs around 80 to 85 degrees F, perfect for swimming and tubing the Delaware River. September and October are the showstoppers: crisp 50 to 70 degree F days, world-class Pocono fall foliage, and beautiful camping. Winter (December through March) typically drops to 20 to 35 degrees F with regular snow, so a winterized rig and a host who confirms cold-weather readiness is the move. Book Columbus Day weekend a season ahead for peak leaf colors.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Bangor?
Totally, and you're not alone: first time renting an RV in the Bangor area is super common, and the local roads are forgiving. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and the propane and water systems, so you leave knowing exactly how everything works. Stick to numbered routes like Route 512, Route 191, and I-80 for smooth highway driving, and avoid tight historic downtowns like Jim Thorpe with bigger rigs. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they drive much like a large van and handle Pocono hills with ease, and your host is just a message away the whole trip.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are at a campground in Bangor or deep inside Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The roadside team can dispatch tire changes, jump-starts, fuel delivery, lockout service, and towing across Pennsylvania and neighboring states. Your host is also a direct resource for quick questions like restarting a generator or troubleshooting the water pump, and RVezy support is reachable throughout your trip. Save the roadside number to your phone before pickup and snap a photo of your RV's plate so you are ready for anything.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Bangor RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, cross-border travel within the US is generally welcome and Bangor's location near the New Jersey and New York borders makes it ideal for multi-state loops. Popular RV road trips from Bangor include the Delaware Water Gap into the Catskills (about 2 hours), the Finger Lakes (4 hours), Acadia-style routes through New England, and Washington DC via I-78 (about 3.5 hours). Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper insurance documentation, so message the host directly before booking if Niagara Falls or Ontario is on your list. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance won't cover it.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Bangor RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier expenses to plan for around Bangor. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, so budget roughly current pump pricing for regular and a slight premium for diesel; check the EIA weekly update before you go. Realistic fuel economy is 8 to 10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, 16 to 20 MPG for Class B campervans, and 12 to 16 MPG when towing a travel trailer. For a typical 4-night Pocono loop covering 250 miles, plan on roughly $80 to $150 in fuel. Fill up at the Wawa or Sheetz on Route 512 in Bangor before heading into the mountains, where prices climb fast.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I reserve a campground near Bangor?
For the smoothest motorhome rental Bangor experience, book your campground as soon as your RV dates are locked. National Park Service sites inside Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area release reservations through Recreation.gov up to six months in advance, and Worthington State Forest and Dingmans Campground regularly sell out for summer weekends. Private parks like Driftstone open bookings several months out. For fall foliage weekends in late September and early October, aim for at least 3 to 4 months lead time. Midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday) are easier to snag and often cheaper, and many private parks discount weekday rates by 10 to 20 percent.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are the local driving conditions like around Bangor?
Driving conditions around Bangor are very RV-friendly once you know the lay of the land. I-80 runs just south through the Delaware Water Gap and is the main artery for east-west travel, while Route 512 and Route 611 give you scenic backroad access to the Poconos. Watch for steep grades on Route 33 south toward Easton and a few low-clearance bridges on smaller country roads (anything under 12 feet 6 inches should be avoided in larger rigs). Summer thunderstorms and winter snow squalls can pop up quickly, so check the National Weather Service forecast before pulling out. Pro tip: avoid I-78 through Allentown at weekday rush hour and the Delaware River bridges during Sunday evening returns.
511pa.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Bangor?
Campgrounds around Bangor offer a great mix from full-hookup resorts to rustic riverside sites. Driftstone on the Delaware provides 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer hookups with on-site dump stations and a riverfront setting. Worthington State Forest and Dingmans Campground lean rustic, often with limited or no hookups and central dump or water stations, perfect if you want quiet riverside camping. Most parks have potable water fills near the entrance, propane refills within 10 miles, and basic camp stores for firewood and ice. Ask your host to top off the fresh tank before delivery so you are set for a night even at hookup-free spots like Worthington.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Bangor?
You'll be surprised how complete your campervan rental Bangor or motorhome really is. Expect a real bed (queens and bunks are common), a kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, sink, pots, dishes, and utensils, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control via air conditioning and a furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Most rigs include a TV, many have generators for off-grid power, and a growing number of hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink as an add-on. Class B campervans are nimble and great for couples; Class C motorhomes sleep 4 to 6 comfortably for a family RV trip in Bangor; travel trailers maximize living space once parked. Check each listing's amenity list before booking, it's all spelled out.
consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0078-renting-recreational-vehicleWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Bangor?
Hosts on RVezy offer a smart menu of add-ons that make your trip easier. Common Bangor extras include generator use ($3 to $5 per hour or a flat day rate), kitchen and linen kits ($30 to $75), camping chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, propane fire pits, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Delivery and setup ranges from free within a few miles to $2 to $4 per mile beyond. Mileage policies vary, some hosts include 100 miles per day, others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer loops to the Finger Lakes or Acadia. Pickup is typically a 1-hour appointment with a full walkthrough. Pro tip: bundle add-ons in your booking message and many hosts will discount the total.
visitpa.com/things-to-do/outdoor-adventureHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, so your money is protected the entire time. The security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment and is typically held as a pre-authorization (the amount is shown on the listing) and released after the trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the condition it left. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's fuel and mileage instructions, and use the RVezy app to message your host so there is a clear record. Empty grey and black tanks at the dump station before returning, since cleaning fees are the most common deposit deduction.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold-weather camping if I rent in Bangor outside summer?
Winter and shoulder-season RVing around Bangor is absolutely doable, and honestly magical when the Poconos are dusted in snow. Look for listings tagged as four-season or winter-ready, which means heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and good insulation for those 20 to 35 degree F January nights. Choose a campground with electric hookups so you can run the furnace without draining batteries, and confirm seasonal hours with the park before booking since many close in winter. Drain or treat the fresh water system if temps drop below 20 degrees F, and ask your host for a cold-weather walkthrough at pickup. Pair a January RV stay with skiing at Camelback or Shawnee Mountain for a uniquely Pocono adventure.
