Campgrounds near Carbondale, Pennsylvania
Carbondale sits in the northern Lackawanna Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania, positioned between the Moosic Mountains and the Pocono Lake Region. The area works well as an RV base: short drives lead to state park lakes, private family resorts, and the wider Pocono Mountains, while the city itself provides fuel, groceries, and dump-station access along the U.S. Route 6 and Route 171 corridors.
Most campgrounds nearby are privately operated and cater to families and seasonal campers. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort in Waymart centers on a spring-fed lake in the Pocono Mountains, while Valley View Farm and Campground and Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging offer more rural, low-key stays. Ponderosa Pines Campground and the Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday round out the options with full-hookup RV sites and cabin lodging.
Public camping is also close at hand. The 1,445-acre Lackawanna State Park is in northeastern Pennsylvania, ten miles north of Scranton, with the 198-acre Lackawanna Lake surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest, making it a practical anchor for renters wanting state-park amenities within roughly a half-hour drive.
Things to do near Carbondale
Water activities dominate the region. Boating, camping, fishing, mountain biking and swimming are popular recreation activities at Lackawanna State Park, and Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort offers fishing, boating, and paddle rentals on its private lake. Lake Wallenpaupack, roughly 40 minutes east, adds a public beach and larger-boat access.
Families with kids gravitate to the resort-style campgrounds. The Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday runs mini golf, a swimming pool, a fishing pond, a bounce pad, playground, basketball, horseshoes, and a dog park during the season.
Off-site, the D&H Rail Trail runs directly through Carbondale for biking and walking, and the Stourbridge Line operates scenic vintage-railroad excursions from Honesdale on selected weekends from spring through fall.

The prime RV window runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private resorts run full activity programs and lake swimming is open. Weekends around the Fourth of July and Labor Day fill earliest, so booking well ahead of peak season is recommended.
Shoulder seasons reward planners. Late May and early June bring reliable warmth with fewer crowds, and September through mid-October produces strong fall color across the Moosic Mountains and Pocono plateau. Off-peak spring and fall stays generally see better availability and cooler nights, which suits hiking and foliage trips.
Winter narrows the field. The Lackawanna State Park campground opens mid-April and closes mid-October, and most private campgrounds in the area follow a similar April-to-October pattern. Cold-weather RVers should confirm operating dates directly with each property before booking.
How to book a campsite near Carbondale
State-park sites are handled through Pennsylvania's central system. Online reservations for day use and overnight facilities can be made or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, so summer weekends should be locked in early.
Private campgrounds each run their own booking. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort, Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Ponderosa Pines Campground, Valley View Farm and Campground, and the Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday all take direct online reservations, and the KOA also books through the national KOA platform. Confirm pet policies, rig-length limits, and hookup type at the time of booking.
For holiday weekends, reserve two to three months out to secure full-hookup sites and longer big-rig pull-throughs.
What to expect on-site
Sites in this area range from rustic state-park loops to full-service RV resorts. The Lackawanna State Park campground features forested sites with electric hook-ups and walk-in tent sites, and campground shower houses provide warm showers and flush toilets. A sanitary dump station is near the campground entrance, but full sewer hookups are limited on public land, so plan on using dump stations between stays.
Private resorts offer more infrastructure. The Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday and other nearby resorts provide full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, pools, camp stores, and organized weekend activities. Cell coverage is generally reliable near town but can drop in the wooded valleys.
Expect wooded, hilly terrain, mosquitoes and black flies in early summer, and cool overnight temperatures even in July. Bring layers, bug spray, and leveling blocks.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carbondale,PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Carbondale?
Good news: a regular Pennsylvania driver's license (or any valid US or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Carbondale. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for the motorhomes and travel trailers available on RVezy, regardless of size. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older and verify their identity directly through the RVezy platform when booking, which takes just a few minutes. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-timers are surprised at how simple the paperwork really is.

The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind. During checkout, you choose the protection tier that matches your comfort level, so you stay in control of your coverage. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Carbondale trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the individual host), and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in a great RV with confidence. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you cancel and on extenuating circumstances, which can matter in northeastern Pennsylvania where a sudden nor'easter or summer thunderstorm can change plans. You can review the exact terms in the RVezy Help Center and inside your RVezy account, so there are no surprises. If your dates shift, message your host first; many are happy to adjust if their calendar allows. Reserve early to grab the best rigs for peak fall foliage weeks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Carbondale?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Carbondale is one of the most-requested features, and plenty of local hosts welcome dogs. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see rigs that allow pets, then message the host to confirm any size or breed notes. Lackawanna State Park allows leashed pets at designated pet-friendly campsites, and many private parks near Carbondale (such as Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort) also welcome dogs. Pro tip: bring a long tether, waste bags, and your pup's vaccination records, since some campgrounds will ask. Your dog will love the cool forest trails around the Lackawanna River.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-park.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Carbondale?
Yes, RV delivery in Carbondale is offered by many RVezy hosts and it is a game-changer if you have never towed before. Filter by Delivery on the search page and you will see rigs that can be dropped off, leveled, and hooked up at a campground, a friend's driveway, or a private property within a set radius. Popular delivery destinations from Carbondale include Lackawanna State Park (about 25 minutes away), Keen Lake Resort in Waymart, and Promised Land State Park in the Poconos. Your host will give you a full walkthrough on arrival, so you can focus on the s'mores instead of the sewer hose. It is the easiest way to have a stress-free first time renting an RV.

From Carbondale you can reach Scranton in about 25 minutes, the Pocono Mountains in about 45 minutes, the Catskills in New York in under 2 hours, Watkins Glen State Park in roughly 3.5 hours, and Niagara Falls in about 5 hours. Each listing shows its mileage policy on the booking page, and any extra miles are billed at a clear per-mile rate, often around $0.30 to $0.45. If you are planning a longer loop, message the host to negotiate a flat add-on for unlimited mileage.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carbondale,PennsylvaniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Carbondale, PA?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Carbondale and the surrounding Lackawanna County area. Top picks include Lackawanna State Park (about 25 minutes southwest, with electric hookups, a dump station, and the 198-acre Lackawanna Lake), Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort in Waymart (full hookups, swimming, and a private lake), and Pine Crest Campground in Greenfield Township (family-friendly with a pool). For something a bit farther, Promised Land State Park in the Poconos is about an hour away. Pro tip: book Lackawanna's wooded electric loops early; they fill up fast every summer weekend.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-park.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Carbondale?
The sweet spot for a Carbondale RV trip is mid-May through mid-October, with peak magic landing in late September and early October when the Endless Mountains turn red and gold with fall foliage. Summer highs in Carbondale average around 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, while nights cool to the mid-50s, perfect for campfire weather. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers and fewer crowds; winter brings cold and snow with lows in the teens and 20s, so most public campgrounds close by late fall. If you want quieter trails and lower nightly rates, target the first three weeks of September; you will get warm days, cool nights, and the first hints of autumn color.
weather.gov/bgm/I have never driven an RV. Will I be okay around Carbondale?
You are going to do great, and Carbondale is one of the easier places in the Northeast to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering driving, hookups, leveling, propane, and the dump station, so you are not figuring anything out alone. Local roads like US-6 and PA-247 are wide and lightly trafficked compared to anything near Philly or NYC, giving first-timers room to get comfortable. Stick to the right lanes on I-81, take the Crystal Lake Road scenic route to Lackawanna State Park, and use a spotter when backing in. Pro tip: do a slow lap around your neighborhood before heading out, and you will feel like a pro within an hour.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat on PA-171, a dead battery at Lackawanna Lake, or a propane issue at a campsite in Waymart, one call gets a pro dispatched to you. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for help with rig-specific questions (like how a particular awning works). For anything bigger, RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN sticker just in case; it speeds up any service call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Carbondale RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, your RV road trip from Carbondale can absolutely cross state lines, and northeastern Pennsylvania is one of the best launchpads for a multi-state loop. Popular routes head into New York's Catskills and Finger Lakes, New Jersey's High Point State Park, and even up to Vermont or down to Washington, DC. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the insurance terms, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: from Carbondale, the drive to Cooperstown, NY (home of the Baseball Hall of Fame) is just over two hours and makes an unforgettable weekend.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Carbondale RV trip?
Fuel is one of the most predictable parts of your trip budget. Larger Class A motorhomes get roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes about 10 to 14 mpg, campervans (Class B) about 16 to 20 mpg, and tow vehicles pulling a travel trailer typically 10 to 14 mpg. Pennsylvania gas prices have recently averaged in the mid-$3 range per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. For a 300-mile weekend loop from Carbondale to the Poconos and back in a Class C, plan roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up off I-81 in Clarks Summit or Dickson City where prices tend to be lower than at highway exits closer to the Poconos.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Carbondale?
For the best sites, book early. Pennsylvania state park campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance through the official reservation system, and weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill up fastest. Private parks like Keen Lake and Pine Crest typically open summer bookings by January or February. Fall foliage weekends in late September and early October are nearly as competitive as July 4th. Pro tip: if your dates show as sold out, check again on Monday mornings, when cancellations from the prior weekend often hit the system.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Carbondale?
Driving around Carbondale is refreshingly manageable, especially compared to bigger metros. The main routes (US-6, PA-171, and PA-247) are two-lane country highways with gentle grades and good shoulders, perfect for easing into RV driving. I-81 is your fast route to Scranton, the Poconos, and beyond. Watch for steeper grades and tighter curves when you head east toward the Poconos or north into the Endless Mountains. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so most renters stick to mid-April through October. Pro tip: avoid downtown Scranton during weekday rush hour (4 to 6 p.m.) if you are driving a larger rig, and use I-476 (the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike) for the smoothest run toward Philadelphia.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Carbondale?
Campgrounds near Carbondale, PA are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. At Lackawanna State Park you will find electric hookups (no water/sewer at most sites), modern shower houses with flush toilets, potable water spigots, and a sanitary dump station near the campground. Private parks like Keen Lake Resort and Pine Crest Campground typically offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, pools, and camp stores. Most also sell firewood on-site (Pennsylvania discourages bringing in outside firewood to help slow pests like the spotted lanternfly and emerald ash borer). Pro tip: fill your freshwater tank before arrival if you are heading to a state park, and keep a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator handy; they make every stop smoother.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat features and amenities come with motorhome rental in Carbondale?
Motorhome rental in Carbondale on RVezy ranges from cozy campervans to fully loaded Class A coaches, and most rigs come ready to camp. Expect real beds (often a queen plus convertible dinette or bunks), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings include outdoor chairs, a hose, sewer kit, and basic kitchen setup. Larger Class C and Class A motorhomes often have TVs, generators, and slide-outs for extra living space. Each listing's amenity section spells out exactly what is included, so you can match the rig to your trip. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps to make sure the family fits comfortably without converting the dinette every night.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carbondale,PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Carbondale?
When you rent an RV in Carbondale, look at the host's add-ons list for the extras that make a trip smoother: linens and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), bikes or kayaks, generators, propane refills, camp chairs, and outdoor grills. Pickup is usually at the host's home base around Carbondale, Scranton, or the Poconos, and many hosts offer delivery to nearby campgrounds for a flat fee (often $2 to $4 per mile). Mileage policies vary by listing, with 100 to 150 free miles per day being common and a flat per-mile rate beyond that. Pro tip: if you are heading to Lackawanna State Park, ask your host to deliver and set up; the park's quiet hours start at 9 p.m., so an early-evening drop-off is ideal.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carbondale,PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Carbondale, PA?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup; it is not charged unless there is damage, missing equipment, or extra cleaning needed. Once your trip wraps and the host confirms the RV is in good shape, the hold is released back to your card, usually within a few business days. Pro tip: take a quick video walk-around of the inside and outside of the RV at both pickup and drop-off; it protects everyone and keeps your deposit return fast and friction-free.
