Camping near Clay, Pennsylvania
Clay is a small community in northern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, set among the rolling farmland of the Cocalico Valley. It sits just west of Ephrata and within a short drive of Lititz, Lancaster city, and Reading, making it a practical base for RV travelers who want quiet countryside at night and attractions within easy reach by day.
The region has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers, cold winters, and precipitation spread fairly evenly through the year, with winter moisture often arriving as snowfall. That pattern shapes the camping season, which runs strongest from spring through fall.
Campgrounds in the immediate area range from full-service family resorts to quieter creekside parks. Starlite Camping Resort, Cocalico Creek Campground, Hickory Run Family Camping Resort, Woodcrest Retreat, and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Eagles Peak all sit within a short drive of Clay and offer RV hookups, cabins, and tent options suited to different trip styles.
Things to do near Clay
History and small-town culture are easy to reach from Clay. The Ephrata Cloister is a preserved historic site founded in 1732, where visitors can tour original 18th-century buildings and learn about the early monastic religious community that lived there. The Green Dragon Farmers Market, one of the largest farmers markets in the area, runs Fridays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and mixes Amish foods, produce, crafts, and flea-market finds.
Outdoor time is close at hand. The Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail connects downtown Ephrata to downtown Lititz along a 7.5-mile one-way route with a mild grade that suits family cycling and walking. Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, north of Clay, draws birders during spring and fall migration.
Families with kids often pair a stay with Dutch Wonderland, Hersheypark, or the Strasburg Rail Road, all reachable by car within roughly an hour.

41° / 27°F 80 mmCold with periodic snow; most seasonal campgrounds closed.
The camping season in the Clay area typically stretches from April into late October, with the private campgrounds around Ephrata operating longest and a few offering limited winter service. Spring brings unsettled weather and steady rainfall, but also greener countryside and lighter crowds through May.
Summer is the peak booking window. Summers here are warm, humid, and wet, and winters are cold with periodic snow. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill first, especially around July 4 and any dates tied to Hersheypark or Dutch Wonderland trips. Reserving several weeks ahead is the norm for holiday weekends.
Fall is often the most comfortable season for RV travel, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and harvest activity on nearby farms. Annual precipitation averages around 44 inches, spread through the year, with the wettest months typically in late summer and early fall. Most seasonal campgrounds close by early November, when only year-round parks remain open.

How to book
Most campgrounds near Clay are privately owned and take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, rather than through a state or federal system. Starlite Camping Resort, Cocalico Creek Campground, Hickory Run Family Camping Resort, Woodcrest Retreat, and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Eagles Peak all publish site maps and availability online.
For summer weekends and holiday periods, booking four to eight weeks ahead is a reasonable target, and longer for pull-through RV sites, waterfront sites, or cabins. Weekday stays and shoulder-season dates in April, May, September, and October are usually easier to secure on shorter notice.
Pennsylvania state parks in the wider region use the state's central reservation system and open bookings up to 11 months in advance, which is useful to know if a trip combines a private RV park with a state-park visit.
What to expect
Expect rural, agricultural surroundings. Roads near Clay are narrow in places, cross Amish farm country, and are shared with horse-drawn buggies, so RV drivers should plan routes on wider state routes such as US 322, PA 272, and PA 501 where possible.
Campgrounds in the area lean family-oriented, with pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities common at the larger resorts. Quieter, more wooded stays are available at the smaller creekside parks. Full hookups, dump stations, and Wi-Fi are widely offered at private resorts, though cellular coverage can dip in low-lying farmland.
Sundays are quieter than elsewhere in Pennsylvania: many Amish-run stands, restaurants, and markets close, while attractions in Lancaster city and Hershey remain open. Planning grocery runs and farm-stand stops for Friday or Saturday avoids surprises.
