Campgrounds near Columbia, Pennsylvania
Columbia sits on the east bank of the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, roughly halfway between Lancaster and York. The town is a practical base for RV travelers touring Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Hershey, and the lower Susquehanna corridor, with private campgrounds clustered within a short drive in every direction.
Options range from full-service resorts to riverside parks. Circle M RV and Camping Resort and Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday sit on the north side, closer to Hershey attractions, while Hershey Road Campground and Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground offer quieter alternatives in the surrounding countryside. South along the river, Otter Creek Campground in southern York County borders both the Susquehanna River and Otter Creek and offers 89 sites on thirty-four acres of woodland.
Most area campgrounds cater to families and touring RVers, with hookups, dump stations, and access to regional rail trails, river launches, and the Hersheypark corridor.
Things to do near Columbia
The Susquehanna River is the main draw. Boat launches, fishing access, and paddling routes line both banks, and Chickies Rock County Park offers views of the Susquehanna with a mix of wooded and open trails, while the paved Northwest River Trail winds along the river with wildlife viewing. The Mason-Dixon Trail passes directly through Otter Creek Campground for hikers heading south.
Families typically pair river time with Hersheypark, ZooAmerica, and Hershey's Chocolate World, all within a short drive. Lancaster's Amish farmlands, covered bridges, and farm markets sit east of Columbia, and Gettysburg is reachable as a day trip.
For low-key days, the Conewago Recreation Trail provides a flat rail-trail suitable for kids on bikes, and Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area is a well-known birding stop during spring and fall migrations.

The camping season in the Columbia area runs roughly mid-April through October. Otter Creek Campground opens in mid-April and closes in late October, and Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday operates from April through October. A few nearby parks stay open year-round, but most private campgrounds close over winter.
Spring brings cool nights, blooming farmland, and the busiest bird migration windows at Middle Creek. Summer is peak season: warm, humid days, full Hersheypark schedules, and heavy weekend demand at family resorts. Sites with full hookups or premium amenities may require booking several weeks in advance during peak season.
Fall is a strong shoulder season, with hardwood color along the river bluffs through mid- to late October and cooler nights that thin out crowds. Late-summer thunderstorms and remnants of tropical systems can bring heavy rain and localized flooding along the Susquehanna and its tributaries.

How to book campgrounds near Columbia
Most campgrounds in the Columbia area are privately owned and booked directly through each operator's website or phone line. KOA properties, including Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday, use the KOA reservation system, while resorts such as Circle M RV and Camping Resort and Hershey Road Campground take bookings through their own sites.
Otter Creek Campground uses an inquiry-based process: an online form starts the request, but it does not confirm the stay, and staff follow up to finalize the booking. Reservations require a deposit, and holiday weekends require a three-night minimum with payment in advance.
For summer weekends and Hersheypark trips, book several weeks out. Cancellation windows vary by operator, so review each policy before paying a deposit.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Expect a mix of wooded and open sites with 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and often sewer hookups at the larger resorts. KOA and resort-style parks include pools, mini golf, playgrounds, catch-and-release fishing ponds, and planned weekend activities. Quieter parks focus on riverside access, hiking, and boat launches over structured programming.
River-oriented campgrounds sit on lower ground and can be affected by heavy rain, so check conditions before arrival during severe weather along the Susquehanna and its tributaries.
Wildlife is common. Campers may see ducks, geese, and birds of many kinds at riverside sites, and as with any animals there is a chance they might bite, scratch, or spray when they feel threatened. Standard bear-country precautions are not required, but secure food against raccoons.
