The Schuylkill River Trail and Bartram Trail sections offer flat rail-trail cycling and walking. Pottsville, the county seat, is home to the Yuengling Brewery tour and a walkable historic downtown. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, about 40 minutes south, is a major raptor-migration viewing site each fall. Families also use Christmas Pines Campground, LLC and Pennsylvania Dutch Campsite as bases for day trips to Knoebels Amusement Resort and Cabela's in Hamburg.

The main camping season in this part of Pennsylvania runs from April through mid-October. Private parks such as Christmas Pines Campground, LLC, Pennsylvania Dutch Campsite, Appalachian RV Campground, and Mountain Springs Camping Rsrt typically open in spring and close by late fall, though some maintain limited winter sites for self-contained RVs. The Locust Lake State Park campground opens in early April and closes in mid-October, on a seasonal schedule set by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Summer is peak season. July and August weekends fill early, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day, and the state park campground often books to capacity. Late spring brings wildflowers and cool nights, while early fall delivers Pennsylvania's hardwood foliage. Fall foliage peaks in early October, and the lakeside blazes red and orange. Spring rains and occasional flooding are more common in March and April, and tropical remnants can bring heavy rain in late summer and early fall, so travelers should monitor forecasts before arrival.

Sites in the area are generally wooded, with a mix of gravel and grass pads. Private parks tend to offer full or partial hookups, laundry, camp stores, and pools. The wooded Locust Lake campground has modern campsites (full-hookup, electric, non-electric, walk-to, and pet-friendly) divided into two areas, with tenting on the north side of the lake and trailer facilities on the south side, plus restrooms with warm showers, playgrounds, an amphitheater, a sanitary dump station, and a camp store. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks, and coverage can drop off along the ridges. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, black bear, and abundant songbirds, so food should be stored inside the RV. Firewood must be sourced locally to limit pest spread. Roads into the region are hilly and often narrow, so drivers of larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs should plan routes on state highways rather than back roads.
