Campgrounds near Delaware Water Gap
The borough of Delaware Water Gap sits at the southern end of the 70,000-acre Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, administered by the National Park Service across northwest New Jersey and northeast Pennsylvania. RV renters use the town as a base for the Pocono Mountains, the Kittatinny Ridge, and 40 miles of the Delaware River. Interstate 80 runs directly through the Gap, so most private campgrounds sit within a short drive of the exit.
Options cluster on both sides of the river. On the New Jersey side, Worthington State Forest has 78 tent and trailer sites along two miles of river frontage, each with a picnic table and fire ring, plus showers, modern toilets, and drinking water. Sites 1-23 are tent-only, and sites 29-82 accept tents, travel trailers, and motorhomes. On the Pennsylvania side, private parks such as Hickory Lake Campground, Camp Charles Campgrounds, Camp Taylor Campground, and Mountain Vista Campground offer full-hookup and partial-hookup RV sites.
The national recreation area itself does not operate a drive-in RV campground at the Gap end of the park, so RV renters typically stay at Worthington or a nearby private campground and day-trip into the park.
Things to do near Delaware Water Gap
Hiking dominates the area. Around 30 miles of the Appalachian Trail wind through the park, and Mt. Tammany rises to 1,527 feet above sea level with a panoramic view of the Delaware Water Gap from the summit. Waterfall stops include Raymondskill Falls, a three-tiered cascade that the National Park Service identifies as the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania, and Bushkill Falls, where a network of walkways and bridges leads past several drops.
The river is the other main draw. Outfitters rent canoes, kayaks, and tubes for float trips, and public beaches at Smithfield and Milford have lifeguards in season along with picnic tables and changing facilities. Families often combine a morning float with an afternoon at one of the beaches.
Other options include fishing for bass, walleye, and catfish from the riverbank, cycling the McDade Recreational Trail, and visiting Millbrook Village, a living-history site inside the park.

The main camping season runs from spring through fall. Worthington State Forest's campground is open from April 1 through December 31, and most private campgrounds in the area follow a similar seasonal window, closing in the coldest months. River camping inside the national recreation area is also seasonal, and the schedule changes each year, so the National Park Service's River Camping web page is the source for current dates.
Summer weekends fill first. Sites at Worthington and popular private campgrounds along the river book weeks or months ahead for July and August, especially around holiday weekends. Midweek stays remain easier to secure through the season.
Shoulder season is a good compromise. Late spring brings American shad running in the Delaware River, wildflowers, and cooler hiking temperatures. Early fall offers foliage on the Kittatinny Ridge and lower bug pressure. Winter closes most drive-in campgrounds, though the park itself stays open for day use, hunting, and cross-country skiing.
How to book a campsite
Reservation systems vary by campground operator. Online reservations for Worthington State Forest are made at camping.nj.gov, the state's official portal, and out-of-state campers are subject to an additional surcharge. Pets are not permitted in the campground, though trained service dogs are welcome.
River camping inside the national recreation area is a separate system. The river is divided into five zones, and reservations at Recreation.gov can be made up to six months in advance for a campsite within the zone the paddler expects to reach by the end of the day. Sites are primitive, paddler-access only, and camping is limited to one night per zone.
Private campgrounds such as Hickory Lake Campground, Camp Charles Campgrounds, Camp Taylor Campground, and Mountain Vista Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect on the ground
Facilities differ sharply between public and private options. Worthington State Forest is a dry campground with no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites; water and modern restrooms with showers are available at the bathhouses. Private campgrounds in the surrounding Poconos generally offer electric and water hookups, dump stations, and amenities such as camp stores and playgrounds.
This is bear country. Black bears tend to steer clear of humans, but campers should store all food in a locked vehicle, and ticks are common in the area.
A few practical notes for RV renters: the road to Worthington's campground is narrow with only a few pull-off areas, so caution is needed when passing other vehicles, and the New Jersey State Park Service warns that the park experiences frequent power outages due to its remote location. Cell service is spotty throughout the Gap.

You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and we'll verify your ID right inside the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set. dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxIs rental protection included with my Delaware Water Gap RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Delaware Water Gap booked through RVezy comes with a built-in protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, so you can focus on hiking the Appalachian Trail or paddling the Middle Delaware River instead of worrying about the what-ifs. You (not the host) choose your coverage level during checkout, so you can pick the option that matches your comfort level. Yes, your pup is welcome on plenty of RVezy rentals. Use the Pet-Friendly filter to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Delaware Water Gap, then message the host if you have any specific questions about size or breed. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area allows leashed pets on most trails, including the McDade Recreational Trail, and Dingmans Campground is dog-friendly. Pets aren't allowed on the swimming beaches at Smithfield, Milford, or Turtle Beach. Pro tip: pack a long lead and plenty of water, summer humidity along the Delaware River can be tough on dogs, so plan hikes for early morning.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Delaware Water Gap?
Yes, RV delivery in Delaware Water Gap is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many RVezy hosts will drop the rig at popular spots like Dingmans Campground, Worthington State Forest Campground, or the Delaware Water Gap/Pocono Mountain KOA, level it, hook it up to water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is a game changer if it's your first time renting an RV or you're flying in from New York City or Philadelphia. Just toggle the Delivery filter when searching, then enter your campground address. Pro tip: ask your host about delivery to Hidden Lake or Smithfield Beach day-use areas if you're planning a multi-stop motorhome rental Delaware Water Gap adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037868714-RV-deliveryHow does mileage work and how far can I drive on my Delaware Water Gap RV trip?
You've got plenty of range to explore. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, often 100 to 150 miles per day included, with affordable per-mile rates beyond that, and some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer Delaware Water Gap RV trip. From the park you can easily reach Jim Thorpe (about 50 miles southwest), the Catskills (about 70 miles north), Philadelphia (90 miles south), or New York City (75 miles east). Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop through the Poconos and Finger Lakes, filter for unlimited-mileage listings first, then sort by price, it's the simplest way to lock in a great deal without watching the odometer.

nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/developed-campgrounds.htmWhen is the best time of year to visit Delaware Water Gap in an RV?
Late September through mid-October is magic, the Kittatinny Ridge lights up in red, orange, and gold, and daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s. Summer (June to August) brings warm 80 to 85°F days, swimming at Smithfield Beach, and prime paddling on the Delaware River, though it's also the busiest season. Spring (May) is quieter with wildflowers along Dingmans Falls. Winters get cold (20s to 30s) with occasional snow, but cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the McDade Trail are a hidden gem. Pro tip: book your RV rental in Delaware Water Gap by mid-August if you want a peak foliage weekend, fall sites at Dingmans Campground sell out fast.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay in Delaware Water Gap?
You'll do great, and you won't be alone figuring it out. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery) covering driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and dumping tanks, so you're not guessing. For a first time renting an RV, Delaware Water Gap is actually a forgiving destination: US-209 through the park is wide, well-maintained, and scenic, and most campground roads at Dingmans and the KOA are easy to navigate. If you're nervous, start with a Class C motorhome or campervan rental Delaware Water Gap, both drive much like a large van. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot practice loop before leaving the pickup location, and avoid I-80 through the Gap during Friday afternoon rush.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Delaware Water Gap trip?
Help is just a phone call away. 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so whether you have a flat on US-209 near Bushkill, a dead battery at Worthington State Forest, or a mechanical issue heading up to Milford, you can get support fast. You'll also have a direct line to your host (most are local to the Poconos or northern NJ and know the area well) and RVezy customer support before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: cell service drops in parts of the park, especially around Dingmans Campground and Old Mine Road, so save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the highway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008794-Roadside-assistance-coverageWhat are the best RV road trips from Delaware Water Gap?
You're sitting on one of the best RV road trip hubs in the Northeast. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Delaware Water Gap include: north to the Catskills and Finger Lakes (3 to 5 hours), south to Lancaster's Amish Country and Gettysburg (2.5 to 3.5 hours), east to the New Jersey shore at Cape May (about 3 hours), and a Pocono loop through Jim Thorpe, Lake Wallenpaupack, and Promised Land State Park (under 2 hours each). Cross-border travel into New York and New Jersey is easy and allowed on most rentals (just confirm with your host); Mexico trips aren't permitted due to insurance limits. Pro tip: the drive on Old Mine Road along the NJ side of the river is a stunning half-day scenic loop.
visitpa.com/region/pocono-mountainsWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Here's a realistic picture: campervans and Class B rentals average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG), and Class A rigs around 7 to 10 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices near Delaware Water Gap typically run a bit higher than the national average, with cheaper stations clustered around East Stroudsburg and Marshalls Creek along US-209. For a 4-day, 300-mile Pocono loop in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in PA before crossing into NJ, fuel is generally cheaper on the Pennsylvania side, and stations on Route 209 near Marshalls Creek are RV-friendly with easy pull-through access.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Delaware Water Gap?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best campgrounds near Delaware Water Gap. For summer weekends and fall foliage season (mid-September to mid-October), aim to reserve 3 to 6 months ahead, especially at Dingmans Campground and Worthington State Forest, which fill up fast. Dingmans takes reservations directly through their website, NPS river campsites are managed via Recreation.gov, and the Delaware Water Gap/Pocono Mountain KOA books through KOA's site. Mid-week and shoulder-season trips often have availability just a few weeks out. Pro tip: if your first-choice campground is full, call them directly, last-minute cancellations are common, especially at Dingmans, and a quick voicemail can land you a riverside site.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Delaware Water Gap?
You'll find mostly easy, scenic driving. US-209 is the main north-south route through the park on the PA side and is wide and RV-friendly. I-80 cuts east-west through the actual Gap and has steep grades plus stunning views, take it slow in the right lane. Old Mine Road on the NJ side is narrow, partly unpaved, and best for smaller RVs or campervans. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from December through March, so check forecasts. Summer thunderstorms can be intense but pass quickly. Pro tip: avoid I-80 westbound on Sunday evenings, NYC weekend traffic returning home backs up for miles near the Gap, leave by mid-afternoon instead.
511pa.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Delaware Water Gap offer for RVs?

Worthington State Forest is more rustic, no hookups, but has potable water and bathhouses. For dumping mid-trip, there's a public dump station at the KOA (small fee for non-guests). Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before heading to Worthington or any river campsite, and bring a 25-foot sewer hose, some sites at Dingmans have a longer reach to the connection.

Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with your host at pickup and again at drop-off, it makes deposit return fast and painless, and you'll be on the road exploring the Poconos in no time.
