Campgrounds near Dickson City
Dickson City sits in Lackawanna County in northeastern Pennsylvania, a few miles north of Scranton along the Interstate 81 corridor. The surrounding region, part of the Endless Mountains and northern Pocono foothills, offers a mix of state park camping, private lakeside resorts, and small wooded RV parks within a short drive of the city.
The closest public option is Lackawanna State Park, a 1,445-acre park located about ten miles north of Scranton, centered on 198-acre Lackawanna Lake. Private options in the wider area include Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort in Waymart, Shady Rest Campground near Union Dale, Highland Campgrounds, and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park.
Base location matters here. RV renters looking for lake access, boat rentals, and family programming typically head to Keen Lake or Lackawanna State Park. Travelers wanting a quiet wooded base close to I-81, or year-round hookups outside the state park season, tend to book Shady Rest Campground.
Things to do near Dickson City
Water recreation drives most trips. Lackawanna State Park centers on a 198-acre lake with boating, fishing, swimming, and multi-use trails winding through forest. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort offers a private lake with kayak and paddleboard rentals, a swimming beach, a heated pool, and a pet-friendly beach.
On land, families can explore the D&H Rail-Trail near Union Dale, ride the trails at Elk Mountain in the off-season, or visit Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton. Winter travelers use Shady Rest Campground as a base for skiing at nearby Elk Mountain Ski Resort.
Dickson City itself supplies practical stops between adventures, including grocery, big-box retail, and dining along Commerce Boulevard, useful for RV renters restocking before heading to more remote sites.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when weather is warmest and family programming at private resorts is in full swing. The Lackawanna State Park campground opens in mid-April and closes in mid-October, so summer weekends fill early and reservations should be made well in advance.
Spring and early fall are quieter, with cool nights and variable rainfall. Fall foliage in the Endless Mountains and northern Poconos typically peaks from late September into mid-October, drawing weekend traffic to lakeside resorts and scenic byways along Pennsylvania Route 6.
Winter narrows the field significantly. Most private campgrounds close for the season and the state park campground shuts down after mid-October, but Shady Rest Campground stays open year-round, making it a practical choice for skiers heading to nearby Elk Mountain or for travelers passing through on I-81.
How to book near Dickson City
Lackawanna State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked up to eleven months in advance and must be reserved at least three days ahead of arrival. Reservations can also be made by phone through the state park reservation line during posted hours.
Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort accepts reservations directly through its own website. Shady Rest Campground, Highland Campgrounds, and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park handle bookings directly with the operator by phone or through their own sites.
For summer weekends and holidays, book several months out. A phased shower house renovation project at Lackawanna State Park is blocking certain sites while work is completed in stages, so check the reservation map before locking in dates.
What to expect near Dickson City
Terrain in this part of Pennsylvania is hilly and wooded, so sites are not always level and RV renters should carry leveling blocks. Cell service can be spotty in and around state parks in the region, and downloading a park map before arrival is recommended.
Hookup levels vary. Lackawanna State Park offers electric sites, walk-in tent sites, and cabins, with a sanitary dump station near the campground entrance but no full hookups at typical sites. Private parks in the area generally offer water, sewer, and 30 or 50-amp electric.
Pennsylvania restricts bringing firewood into the state and enforces spotted lanternfly precautions, so buy firewood locally and inspect the rig for egg masses before departure.

An RV rental in Dickson City is one of the most affordable ways to vacation in the Pocono and Endless Mountains region. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run roughly $125 to $200, and larger Class A or Class C motorhomes generally range from $175 to $300 per night, depending on size, age, and season. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dickson%20City%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Dickson City, PA?
Your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dickson City. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy, since they fall under non-commercial weight limits. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the licensing step is done so they can focus on the fun stuff, like a Steamtown National Historic Site visit before hitting the road.

Yes, your pup is welcome on plenty of trips. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Dickson City, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts who allow dogs (some allow cats too). Pennsylvania state parks make it easy on the ground: Lackawanna State Park, about 10 miles north of Dickson City, allows pets at designated pet-friendly campsites. Promised Land and Tobyhanna State Parks in the Poconos also have pet-friendly loops. Pro tip: McDade Park in nearby Scranton has shaded trails perfect for a midday dog walk before continuing your RV camping in Dickson City adventure.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-park.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or house in Dickson City?
Yes, RV delivery in Dickson City is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to your driveway, a Pocono cabin, or campgrounds like Lackawanna State Park, Keen Lake Resort, or Wilkes-Barre/Scranton KOA, then set it up, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter your search using the Delivery option to see hosts who offer this, and message them directly for a delivery quote based on distance. Pro tip: choosing delivery means you never have to drive an unfamiliar motorhome through Scranton's hillier streets or I-81 traffic.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dickson%20City%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive on a Dickson City RV trip?
You have plenty of road ahead of you. Each Dickson City host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy, with many offering a generous daily allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) plus a per-mile rate beyond that. Some hosts advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for longer hauls. From Dickson City you're well-positioned: about 20 minutes to downtown Scranton, 45 minutes to Promised Land State Park, 90 minutes to the Delaware Water Gap, 2 hours to the Catskills, and roughly 2.5 hours to New York City or Philadelphia. Pro tip: estimate your route on Google Maps before booking, then choose a mileage tier that comfortably covers it.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dickson%20City%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat are the best campgrounds near Dickson City, PA?
You have excellent options within a short drive. The best campgrounds near Dickson City include Lackawanna State Park (about 10 miles north, electric hookups, lake swimming), Keen Lake Camping & Cottage Resort in Waymart (about 25 minutes east, full hookups, family resort vibe), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton KOA Holiday in Bear Creek (around 30 minutes south, big-rig friendly), Moon Lake Park in Hunlock Creek for a quieter experience, and Pioneer Campground in Laceyville for Endless Mountains scenery. Promised Land State Park in the Poconos is also a popular hour-long drive. Pro tip: Pennsylvania state park sites release on a rolling 11-month window through the DCNR reservation system, so summer weekends near Lackawanna Lake go fast.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-park.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Dickson City, PA?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time, and each season has its own personality in northeastern Pennsylvania. May and June bring blooming forests and daytime highs in the 65 to 78 degree range, perfect for hiking. July and August are warmest at 78 to 85 degrees with occasional thunderstorms, ideal for Lackawanna Lake swimming. September and October are arguably the best window: cool 55 to 72 degree days, fewer bugs, and world-class fall foliage across the Endless Mountains and Poconos. Winters are cold (often 15 to 35 degrees with snow), but a winter-ready RV rental in Dickson City can be a cozy basecamp for skiing at Montage Mountain or Elk Mountain. Pro tip: book Columbus Day weekend early, it's peak leaf-peeping.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never rented an RV before. How easy is it for a first-timer in Dickson City?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV is honestly the most common scenario in Dickson City, and RVezy hosts are used to walking new renters through everything step by step. At pickup, your host gives you a hands-on orientation: how to use the generator, level the rig, hook up at a campground, dump tanks, run the awning, and operate the propane stove. You can also message any host before booking to ask questions about the rig or the area. If you'd rather skip driving altogether your first time, choose a host offering delivery and setup. Pro tip: book a Class C motorhome rental in Dickson City, they drive like a big van and are the most beginner-friendly.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something breaks down on my Dickson City RV trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RV rental in Dickson City booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-81, a battery issue at Lackawanna State Park, or a tow need on Route 6 is one phone call away from being handled. The protection plan also helps cover most accidental damage. Your host is usually just a quick text away too, and they know their rig better than anyone, so they're often the fastest source for a question like "where's the breaker for the microwave?" Pro tip: save the RVezy roadside number in your phone before pickup, then relax and enjoy the Poconos.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dickson City RV rental to New York, New Jersey, or Canada?
Yes, in most cases. An RV road trip from Dickson City to New York, New Jersey, Vermont, or even Niagara Falls and Canada is allowed by many RVezy hosts, since the included protection plan extends throughout the U.S. and Canada with host approval. Just confirm cross-border or out-of-state travel with your host before booking by messaging through the listing. Travel into Mexico is not covered by RVezy's protection. Popular routes include Dickson City to the Catskills (about 2 hours), to the Finger Lakes (about 3 hours), to New England, or up I-81 to the Thousand Islands and Ontario. Pro tip: bring your passport for any Canada crossing, and let your host know your planned itinerary at booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Dickson City RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's very manageable. Most travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves (your tow vehicle does), campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get roughly 8 to 12 mpg, and big Class A rigs average 6 to 10 mpg. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average. For a long weekend covering 300 miles in a Class C, plan on roughly $100 to $150 in gas. Pro tip: fill up in Dickson City or Scranton at Costco or Sam's Club on Commerce Boulevard before heading into the Poconos, where stations can be 30 to 50 cents higher per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Dickson City?
The earlier the better, but you have options. Pennsylvania state parks like Lackawanna, Promised Land, and Tobyhanna open reservations 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) system, and summer weekends, holidays, and fall foliage dates fill within days of release. Private parks like Keen Lake Resort and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton KOA usually book 2 to 4 months out for peak season. For midweek shoulder-season trips in May or late September, you can often snag a site just a week ahead. Pro tip: if a state park looks full, set a cancellation alert. Sites open up daily, especially within the 3-day pre-arrival window.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Dickson City and the Poconos?
Driving an RV in and around Dickson City is straightforward for most renters. The town sits right on Interstate 81 (I-81) with wide lanes and gentle grades, and U.S. Route 6 through the Endless Mountains is one of the most scenic, RV-friendly drives in the Northeast. You'll encounter some rolling hills and a few steeper grades heading toward the Poconos on I-380, so downshift on long descents. Winter (December to March) brings snow and ice, so check PA 511 (PennDOT's road condition service) before any cold-weather trip. Avoid taking taller motorhomes onto narrow downtown Scranton streets like Lackawanna Avenue at rush hour. Pro tip: most highway overpasses in PA clear 13 feet 6 inches, comfortably above any RV on the RVezy platform.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Dickson City?
You'll be well taken care of. Most private RV parks within an hour of Dickson City, including Keen Lake Resort and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton KOA, offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, laundry, pools, and camp stores. Pennsylvania state parks like Lackawanna offer electric hookups, modern shower houses, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station near the campground entrance, with potable water fill stations on site. There are also free public dump stations at several parks in the region. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a sewer hose with elbow, and a surge protector. Many Dickson City RVezy hosts pack these as standard, but it's worth confirming in the listing's amenities list before pickup.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-park/stay.htmlWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Dickson City?
You'll feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental in Dickson City comes fully equipped to live comfortably off-grid or at a campsite: real beds (queen or king in the master, plus bunks or convertible dinettes), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for traveling passengers. Most rigs include a TV, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots, generators, outdoor speakers, and solar panels. Campervan rental in Dickson City options are more compact but include the essentials. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities section closely, and ask the host about generator hours if you plan to boondock outside campground hookups.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dickson%20City%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and drop-off work in Dickson City?
You can fully customize your trip. Popular add-ons from Dickson City RVezy hosts include linen and kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, portable grills, generators, bike racks, and pet packages. Many hosts offer delivery and setup to nearby campgrounds like Lackawanna State Park or Keen Lake Resort, with fees usually based on round-trip mileage. Pickup is typically at the host's home or a mutually agreed location near I-81, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation walkthrough. Drop-off is usually at the same spot with the rig returned clean and refueled. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you plan to camp at a no-hookup site in the Endless Mountains.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dickson%20City%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Dickson City RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure, all handled through RVezy and never in cash to the host. You'll pay a portion at booking to lock in your dates and the balance closer to your trip start, all by credit or debit card through the platform. A refundable security deposit is placed as a separate hold before pickup, then released after the rig is returned in the same condition. To avoid surprises, do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and drop-off with your host, return the RV with a clean interior and the fuel level you started with, and stay within the mileage and generator limits in your agreement. Pro tip: the security deposit hold is separate from the booking payment and is released after a successful return, so you can budget normally for your Pocono RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great family RV trip itinerary starting from Dickson City, PA?
You're perfectly placed for a memorable family RV trip from Dickson City. A classic 4-night loop: night 1 at Lackawanna State Park (10 miles north) for swimming and the lake trail, day 2 head to Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton for the working locomotives and Electric City Trolley Museum, night 2 to 3 at Keen Lake Resort in Waymart for paddleboats and mini golf, then finish with two nights at Promised Land State Park in the Poconos (about an hour south) for hiking and stargazing. Total drive: around 120 miles, easy for any rig. Pro tip: pick up Hank's Hoagies in Dickson City before pulling out, it's a Lackawanna County tradition and the perfect first-night campsite dinner.
