Campgrounds near Dover, Pennsylvania
Dover sits in northern York County, within an hour of Gettysburg, Harrisburg, and Lancaster. The area works as a practical base for RV travelers touring south-central Pennsylvania, with a mix of public-land camping and privately operated RV parks close to Route 74 and Interstate 83.
The closest public option is Gifford Pinchot State Park, a 2,338-acre park in northern York County along PA 177 between Rossville and Lewisberry, built around 340-acre Pinchot Lake. Its 289-site campground is one of the largest in the Pennsylvania state park system and draws heavy summer demand from the Baltimore, Harrisburg, and York metros.
Private RV parks in the immediate area include Ben Franklin RV Park, Cedar Lake Resort, Gettysburg Farm RV Campground (a Thousand Trails property in Dover itself), and Campground Island. Together they cover full-hookup family resorts, quieter lake-oriented sites, and farm-setting stays useful for travelers combining Gettysburg battlefield visits with York County day trips.
Things to do near Dover
Pinchot Lake anchors most outdoor activity in the area. Visitors boat, water ski, swim, and picnic during the warm season, and in winter the lake supports ice skating, ice fishing, and ice boating when conditions allow. Trails at Gifford Pinchot State Park cross reverting farm fields and wooded hillsides, and wildlife sightings commonly include white-tailed deer, eastern cottontails, and gray foxes.
Families traveling with kids often base at Gettysburg Farm RV Campground, a working farm on 120 acres bordered by Conewago Creek where children can feed and pet farm animals and watch planting and harvesting. The Gettysburg battlefields sit roughly 25 miles west, and downtown York, the Susquehanna riverfront, and Lancaster County Amish country are all reachable as day trips.

The prime RV window runs mid-April through late October, which aligns with the operating season at Gifford Pinchot State Park. Late spring brings mild days, greening farmland, and manageable crowds; it is a good stretch for first-time RVers wanting cooler nights and open availability.
Summer is peak season. Sites at Gifford Pinchot fill quickly on summer weekends, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book out first. Expect warm, humid afternoons with scattered thunderstorms; August is typically the wettest month in the region.
Fall delivers the most comfortable RV weather: crisp mornings, dry afternoons, and hardwood color through October. Winter camping is limited. The Gifford Pinchot campground closes at the end of October and reopens the second Friday in April, and most private parks scale back services, though the state park itself remains open year-round for day use and ice sports.

How to book a campsite near Dover
Gifford Pinchot State Park uses the Pennsylvania state park reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance and must be reserved at least 3 days before arrival. The campground operates from the second Friday in April through late October, and the reservation window releases at noon Eastern Time.
Gettysburg Farm RV Campground is a Thousand Trails property; members can stay on a first-come, first-served basis, while non-members book through the Thousand Trails or RV on the Go website. Ben Franklin RV Park, Cedar Lake Resort, and Campground Island are booked directly with the property. For summer weekends and any holiday period, reserve two to three months out at minimum.
What to expect on arrival
At Gifford Pinchot State Park, all 289 campsites have macadam pads that can fit most rigs from large motorhomes down to small tent setups. Many sites have electric hookups, but full-hookup sites are limited, so travelers needing sewer connections should filter carefully when booking. Pets are permitted only at designated sites, and a sanitary dump station is available on site.
Private parks in the area typically offer full hookups, laundry, and a pool. Gettysburg Farm has a mix of full and partial hookups with both 30- and 50-amp service. Cell coverage is generally reliable across northern York County, and grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops are easy to reach in Dover, Wellsville, and York.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Dover, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Dover, PA?
RV rental in Dover is one of the most affordable ways to explore south-central Pennsylvania. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $295, and larger Class A coaches fall between $250 and $450. Hosts set their own rates, so you'll find cheap RV rental Dover options especially mid-week and during shoulder season. To save more, filter by Instant Book, search for travel trailers (the most budget-friendly category), and consider a Sunday-through-Thursday booking. Pro tip: York County's proximity to Hersheypark and Gettysburg means weekend rates spike from late June through Labor Day, so booking in April or September gets you the same RV for noticeably less.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Dover, Pennsylvania?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dover. PennDOT does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or towable trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers essentially every RV on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older and upload your license through the platform for quick ID verification before pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward it is: you book, verify, and you're ready to roll out toward Gifford Pinchot State Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Dover RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can hit the road toward Codorus State Park with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host). Roadside assistance covers flat tires, lockouts, battery jumps, and towing across Pennsylvania and beyond. It provides meaningful financial protection so a small mishap on US-30 doesn't derail your motorhome rental Dover experience. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully during booking to match your comfort level and budget.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Dover RV rental?
Booking an RV rental in Dover is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy across the platform. Every booking includes a grace period after confirmation where you can cancel and get your money back, and additional refund options apply based on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your plans stay on track. That means you can lock in that perfect travel trailer for your Hersheypark weekend now and still have flexibility if plans shift. For full details on timing and refund tiers, the RVezy Help Center walks you through every scenario clearly before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Dover RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Dover options are easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see listings from hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Many local hosts even include pet bowls or extra towels for muddy paws. York County is genuinely dog-friendly: Codorus State Park has miles of leashed-pet trails around Lake Marburg, and the Heritage Rail Trail County Park (a 21-mile crushed-stone path through Hanover Junction) is a favorite for long walks with your pup. Pro tip: most pet-friendly hosts ask for a quick heads-up on breed and size in your booking message, which also helps them confirm there's no extra cleaning fee surprise.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/CodorusStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Dover?
Yes, RV delivery Dover is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig through town. Many local hosts will deliver, level, and set up your RV directly at York County campgrounds like Gettysburg Farm RV Resort or Indian Rock Campground, or even to your home driveway in Dover Township. Just filter by Delivery on the search page, message the host with your destination, and confirm the delivery fee (usually based on mileage from their location). When you arrive, the RV is ready to enjoy: slides out, fridge cold, and a full walkthrough waiting. It turns a campervan rental Dover trip into a true plug-and-play vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow far can I drive on a Dover RV trip, and how do mileage limits work?
You've got room to roam on a Dover RV trip. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and you'll see the daily allowance (typically 100 to 150 free miles per day) listed clearly on each RVezy listing along with the per-mile cost beyond that. Some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, ideal if you're chasing a longer loop. From Dover, Gettysburg sits about 28 miles southwest, Hersheypark is roughly 35 miles north, Lancaster's Amish Country is about 40 miles east, and Washington, DC is around 100 miles south. Pro tip: if your itinerary is heavy on driving, filter for unlimited-mileage listings first, it's usually cheaper than paying overage fees on a long route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat are the best campgrounds near Dover, PA for an RV trip?

For state-park camping, Gifford Pinchot State Park (15 miles north) and Codorus State Park (20 miles southwest) both have electric RV sites on beautiful lakes. Pro tip: book Gifford Pinchot weekends as early as you can, summer Saturdays fill up months out.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/GiffordPinchotStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Dover, PA?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Dover RV trip, with each season bringing something different. Spring (April to May) is mild with highs in the 60s and 70s and blossoms across York County's farmland. Summer (June to August) runs warm with highs in the mid-80s and occasional humid 90s, perfect for Codorus State Park lake days. Fall (mid-September through October) is the sweet spot: crisp days in the 60s, fewer crowds, and beautiful foliage along the Susquehanna River. Winters dip into the 20s and 30s with occasional snow, so many campgrounds close November through March. Insider tip: aim for the last week of September for fall colors, open campgrounds, and shoulder-season pricing.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting one in Dover beginner-friendly?
First time renting an RV? You're in great company in Dover, where most hosts specialize in helping new renters succeed. Every RVezy booking includes a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving basics, hookups, slide-outs, the propane system, and dumping tanks, no guessing required. York County's flat-to-rolling terrain and well-maintained routes like US-30 and PA-74 are forgiving for first-timers, and many beginners start with a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer to build confidence. Prefer to skip the drive entirely? Choose a host who offers delivery and they'll bring the RV right to your campsite. Pro tip: message your host a day before pickup with any questions, they genuinely enjoy walking new renters through every detail.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Dover booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the included renter protection plan. If you get a flat on I-83, a dead battery at Gifford Pinchot, or a mechanical issue on US-30 heading to Gettysburg, you call one number and help is dispatched: tire service, towing, jump-starts, lockout help, and fuel delivery are all covered. Your host is also a quick text away for RV-specific questions like how to reset the inverter. And RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside number and save your host's contact in your phone before pulling out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Dover, PA?
Dover sits in a sweet spot for an RV road trip, with multiple iconic routes within easy reach. Head about 28 miles southwest to Gettysburg National Military Park for Civil War history and battlefield auto-tours. Drive roughly 35 miles north to Hersheypark and Hershey Gardens for family-friendly thrills. Cruise about 40 miles east through Lancaster's Amish Country and overnight at a Dutch-country campground. For a longer loop, the Pocono Mountains are about 2.5 hours northeast, and Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is roughly 3 hours south via I-81. Cross-border travel into Maryland and West Virginia is fully allowed; Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: the Susquehanna River drive along PA-74 south is a gorgeous, underrated scenic alternative to the interstate.
nps.gov/gett/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Dover?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on any Dover RV trip, but it's predictable once you know the numbers. Travel trailers towed by a half-ton truck average 10 to 13 mpg, Class C motorhomes get around 8 to 10 mpg, and larger Class A diesel pushers run 7 to 9 mpg. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes. For a 3-day, 300-mile loop through Gettysburg and Hershey in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $160 in fuel at current prices. Check the EIA weekly fuel report for up-to-date numbers before you go. Pro tip: fill up in Maryland just south on I-83 where gas often runs noticeably cheaper.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Dover?
For the best campgrounds near Dover, aim to book 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays, and 2 to 4 weeks ahead for shoulder-season trips. Pennsylvania State Parks (including Gifford Pinchot and Codorus) use the official ReserveAmerica-powered Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system and open bookings up to 11 months in advance, which is when peak July and August sites get snapped up. Private parks like Gettysburg Farm RV Resort and Indian Rock Campground book directly through their websites. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday night, book two separate parks (Friday at one, Saturday at another), it's a small inconvenience for keeping your York County RV trip alive during peak weekends.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhat are driving conditions like around Dover, PA?
Driving conditions around Dover are some of the most beginner-friendly in the Mid-Atlantic. The terrain is gently rolling farmland with no mountain passes, and the main routes (US-30, PA-74, I-83) are well-maintained with generous shoulders. Avoid taking larger Class A motorhomes through downtown York's narrow one-way streets, stick to the bypass on I-83 or US-30 instead. Watch for Amish horse-drawn buggies if you venture east toward Lancaster County, especially on PA-462. Winter (December to February) can bring icy patches and occasional snow, which is why most RV rentals run April through October. Pro tip: check PennDOT's free 511PA traffic site before you pull out, it shows real-time construction and incidents on every major Pennsylvania route.
511pa.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Dover offer for RVs?
Campgrounds near Dover are well-equipped for modern RVs. Most private parks like Gettysburg Farm RV Resort, Cedar Lake Campground, and Indian Rock Campground offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), free Wi-Fi, pools, laundry, and dump stations on-site. Pennsylvania State Parks at Gifford Pinchot and Codorus offer electric hookups and shared water spigots, with centralized dump stations near the campground exit. Potable water fill-ups are available at every dump station, and propane refills can be done at Cedar Lake or at nearby Tractor Supply locations in Dover and Dillsburg. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 90-degree sewer elbow, two cheap items that make hookups at any York County campground far easier.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat's included inside a typical RV rental from Dover?
Dover RV rentals come ready for the road. Most listings include a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, freezer, stovetop, microwave, often an oven), a bathroom with shower and toilet, a queen or king sleeping setup, plus convertible dinettes and couches that often sleep 4 to 8 total. Expect a roof-mounted air conditioner, propane furnace, hot water tank, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts also include linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, a hose, and leveling blocks as standard. TVs and Wi-Fi hotspots are common in newer rigs, and generators are standard in Class A and most Class C motorhomes. Pro tip: scroll the listing's amenities section carefully and message your host if you need anything specific like a Pack 'n Play or extra propane tank.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options are common with Dover RV rentals?
Dover hosts offer some genuinely useful add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), full kitchen kits, generator use (often $3 to $5 per hour), outdoor grills, bike racks, kayaks, fire pits, and pet packages. Delivery is a popular add-on, priced per mile from the host's location to campgrounds like Gettysburg Farm or your driveway. Pickup is typically a 60 to 90 minute orientation appointment in Dover or nearby York. Mileage policies vary by host (look for unlimited-mileage listings if you're planning a long loop), and generator hours are often included for the first few hours then metered after. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and linens for a true zero-effort campervan rental Dover experience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your Dover RV rental is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. Your total includes the nightly rate, host's fees, RVezy service fee, taxes, and your chosen renter protection plan. A refundable security deposit is held (not charged) on your card a few days before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig, and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back clean, undamaged, and on time. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, it's the single best way to avoid any deposit disputes and keep your family RV trip Dover memories stress-free.
