Campgrounds near Forest City, Pennsylvania
Forest City sits in northeastern Pennsylvania at the northern edge of the Lackawanna Valley, near the meeting point of Susquehanna, Wayne, and Lackawanna counties. The surrounding area combines wooded ridges, small lakes, and rural two-lane roads, with the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail and multiple state game lands within a short drive. Scranton lies roughly 25 miles to the south, giving RV travelers access to groceries, fuel, and services on the way in.
RV travelers have a mix of private resort campgrounds and state park camping nearby. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort in Waymart is a long-running lakeside resort with full hookup sites, and Ponderosa Pines Campground sits in the northern Pocono region. Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday, Shady Rest Campground, and Valley View Farm and Campground round out the closer private options.
Lackawanna State Park, about a 30 minute drive south of Forest City, provides the region's main public campground with electric and non-electric sites, camping cottages, and yurts on the 198 acre Lackawanna Lake.
Things to do near Forest City
Water recreation drives the trip for most families. Lackawanna Lake supports boating, fishing, and swimming, with multi-use trails winding through forest around the shoreline. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort offers on-site swimming and boating on its private lake for registered guests.
On land, Lackawanna State Park has forested multi-use trails for hiking and mountain biking, plus a seasonal swimming pool. Archbald Pothole State Park, a short drive south, features the world's largest glacial pothole, roughly 38 feet deep, viewable from a fenced platform along a short loop trail.
Off-park attractions include Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum, and rail-trail sections of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail suitable for cycling with kids.

Peak camping season in the Forest City area runs from late May through mid-October. Summer brings warm days ideal for swimming and paddling, but weekends at private lakefront parks like Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort book up well in advance, and holiday weekends sell out earliest. The Lackawanna State Park campground opens the second Friday in April and closes in mid-October, and most private campgrounds in the region follow a similar April through October window.
Spring can be wet and muddy at unpaved sites, with wildflowers along park trails and migratory birds returning by May. Fall is a strong shoulder season: foliage typically peaks in early to mid-October, temperatures are cool and comfortable, and reservation pressure eases after Labor Day.
Winter is cold and snowy. Lackawanna State Park itself is open year-round for day use, but the campground is closed, and most private campgrounds also close for the season with pools and camp stores shut down. RV travelers visiting between November and March should plan for dry camping and confirm which sites remain accessible.
How to book campgrounds near Forest City
Lackawanna State Park reservations are handled through the Pennsylvania state parks reservation system, either online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance and must be reserved at least three days ahead of arrival. A phased shower house renovation project is scheduled at the park campground, so some sites are blocked from booking while work is completed in stages.
Private campgrounds including Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort, Ponderosa Pines Campground, Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday, Shady Rest Campground, and Valley View Farm and Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and the KOA property also lists availability through the KOA reservation platform.
For summer weekends and any stay tied to Independence Day, Labor Day, or peak foliage, book several months out. Weeknight and shoulder-season stays are typically easier to secure with shorter notice.
What to expect at Forest City campgrounds
Expect wooded, hilly terrain with two-lane rural roads leading into most campgrounds. Large rigs should confirm site length and turning access before booking, particularly at older parks where interior roads can be tight. Cell service is unreliable in and around Pennsylvania state parks, so it helps to download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival.
Most private campgrounds in the area offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer at full hookup sites, plus a dump station for partial-hookup guests. Lackawanna State Park has electric sites, a sanitary dump station near the campground entrance, flush toilets, and warm showers, but no individual sewer hookups.
Black bears live throughout the region, so food and trash should stay secured. Mosquitoes and ticks are common from late spring through early fall. Several parks, including Lackawanna State Park's Fox Run and Maple Lane loops, allow pets at designated sites.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Forest City, PA?
RV rental in Forest City is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Pocono Mountains and Endless Mountains region. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $75 to $150 per night, campervans run $100 to $200, and larger Class A and Class C motorhomes range from $200 to $400 per night. Pricing peaks during summer weekends and fall foliage season (mid-September through October). For a cheap RV rental in Forest City, book midweek or in early June, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: filter for travel trailers with delivery included and you will often save on both the nightly rate and fuel since the host drops it off for you.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Forest%20City%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Forest City, PA?
Great news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Forest City, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and trailers listed on RVezy. Renters generally need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there is no extra paperwork to track down. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. Most renters are approved quickly, often within minutes, so you can focus on planning your route through the Endless Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included?
Yes, and that is one of the best parts about booking through RVezy. Every RV rental in Forest City comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you are covered from the moment you pull away. You choose your protection level during checkout (not the host), and roadside assistance is bundled in with every plan. That means if a stone chips the windshield on Route 6 or you ding a mirror at a tight campground in the Poconos, you have backup. Pro tip: pick a higher coverage tier for your first trip; the small extra cost is worth the confidence on winding mountain roads.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Forest City RV rental?
You can book with confidence: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts). Your refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and the full policy is published in the RVezy Help Center, so review it before you book. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund. Pro tip: book early for fall foliage season in the Endless Mountains so you have plenty of flexibility if your plans shift, and you lock in the rig you actually want.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Forest City, PA?
Absolutely, and Forest City is a wonderful dog-friendly basecamp. Many hosts list pet-friendly RV rentals in Forest City on RVezy, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching. Once you're here, your pup will love Lackawanna State Park (about 25 minutes south), which welcomes leashed dogs on most trails and at the campground, and the D&H Rail Trail that runs right through Forest City offers miles of flat, shaded walking right out the RV door. Salt Springs State Park is another easy day trip with dog-friendly hiking. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size limits, and bring a long lead so your dog can relax outside the rig at camp.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LackawannaStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Forest City?
Yes, RV delivery in Forest City is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campsite at places like Keen Lake Camping & Cottage Resort, Lackawanna State Park, or Pine Cove Beach Club, then level it, hook up water, sewer, and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing stress, no backing into a tight site, and no figuring out the propane on your own. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, and check their delivery radius and fee. Pro tip: ask for delivery to a full-hookup site so you can settle in and start enjoying the Endless Mountains right away.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LackawannaStatePark/Pages/default.aspxHow far can I drive on my Forest City RV trip?
Forest City is perfectly placed for a road trip, sitting at the gateway to both the Poconos and the Catskills. From here you can reach Scranton in about 35 minutes, Lake Wallenpaupack in under an hour, the Delaware Water Gap in roughly 90 minutes, Cooperstown, NY in about 2.5 hours, and New York City in about 2 hours 45 minutes. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, with some offering unlimited mileage and others including a generous daily allowance plus a small per-mile fee after that. For a longer RV road trip from Forest City out to the Finger Lakes or Niagara Falls, filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: map your route in advance and message the host so they can recommend the best mileage package.
penndot.pa.gov/Pages/default.aspxWhat are the best campgrounds near Forest City, PA?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Forest City include Keen Lake Camping & Cottage Resort in Waymart (about 15 minutes away, with a private lake, full hookups, and a sandy beach), Lackawanna State Park near Dalton (about 25 minutes, with electric sites and great hiking), Pine Cove Beach Club & RV Resort on Lake Wallenpaupack (about 45 minutes, lakefront sites with full hookups), Wilsonia Mountain RV Park, and Promised Land State Park in the Poconos (about an hour away, beautiful wooded sites). Pro tip: state park sites in PA can be reserved up to 11 months ahead through the DCNR reservation system, and private resorts like Keen Lake fill fast for summer weekends, so book your campsite the same day you book your rig.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Forest City, PA?
Forest City sits in the cool northeastern corner of Pennsylvania, so the sweet spot for RV camping in Forest City runs from late May through mid-October. Summer days average 75-82°F with cool 55-60°F nights, perfect for campfires. The real showstopper is fall foliage, typically peaking from late September through mid-October, when the Endless Mountains explode in red and gold. Spring (April-May) is quieter and great for trout fishing, while winter (December-March) brings snow and temperatures often in the teens and 20s°F, but some hosts offer winter-ready rigs for snowmobilers heading to nearby trails. Pro tip: book a foliage trip 3-4 months ahead because RVs and campsites both sell out fast across northeastern PA in October.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and Forest City is actually an ideal place for a first time renting an RV. The roads around town (US-6, PA-171, and I-81 to the south) are well-maintained and far less congested than urban highways. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and dumping tanks, so you're never guessing. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. You can also message the host with questions before you book. Pro tip: for your first trip, pick a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer and head to Lackawanna State Park, just 25 minutes away, so your first drive is short and stress-free.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on US-6, the battery dies at a trailhead, or a slide-out will not retract at Keen Lake, you call one number and help is dispatched to your location. Your host is also just a message away inside the RVezy app and usually knows the rig's quirks better than anyone, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: take a quick photo of the RV's tire pressures and fluid levels during your walkthrough; it helps you and roadside troubleshoot faster if anything pops up while you are exploring the Endless Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Forest City RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is normal from Forest City and one of the best parts of the location. You are minutes from the New York state line, so popular routes include the Catskills (about 90 minutes), the Finger Lakes (about 3 hours), and Niagara Falls (about 4.5 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host's preferences and the protection plan, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: if you are crossing into Canada, ask the host for the vehicle registration and a written travel authorization letter, and bring your passport so you breeze through the border at Thousand Islands or Niagara.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my Forest City RV trip?
Fuel is easy to plan for. Travel trailers don't burn extra gas themselves; your tow vehicle does, typically getting 10-14 MPG. Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes run 6-10 MPG. Gas prices in northeastern Pennsylvania typically run a bit above the national average, with stations along I-81 in Scranton and Carbondale offering some of the better rates near Forest City. For a 4-day trip with about 300 miles of driving in a Class C, budget roughly $120-$180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Carbondale or Honesdale before heading deep into the Poconos or up to the Catskills, since rural stations often charge more.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Forest City?
For the best sites, book early. Pennsylvania state parks like Lackawanna and Promised Land open reservations 11 months in advance through the PA DCNR reservation system, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often fill within days of opening. Private resorts like Keen Lake and Pine Cove Beach Club take reservations on their own websites and frequently sell out 2-3 months ahead for July and August. For fall foliage weekends in late September and early October, aim to book 3-4 months out. Pro tip: if you're flexible on dates, midweek sites (Sunday through Thursday) are easier to grab and quieter, perfect for a relaxed RV trip in Forest City surrounded by the Endless Mountains.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhat are local driving conditions like around Forest City?
Driving an RV around Forest City is genuinely pleasant. Traffic is light, most roads are two-lane country highways like US-6 and PA-171, and the terrain rolls through scenic Endless Mountains valleys with manageable grades. Watch for a few things: deer are common at dawn and dusk, especially along forested stretches; some older bridges in the region have lower weight or height limits (most are signed well in advance); and winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so winter trips need extra caution. I-81 to the south is your main highway connector to Scranton and beyond. Pro tip: avoid downtown Scranton during weekday rush hour (4-6 PM) when heading south, and stick to US-6 east for the most scenic route to the Poconos.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat hookups and dump stations are available at Forest City area campgrounds?
You'll find great infrastructure here. Most private campgrounds near Forest City, including Keen Lake Camping & Cottage Resort and Pine Cove Beach Club, offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer) at the majority of sites. State parks like Lackawanna and Promised Land typically offer electric and water hookups with a centralized dump station and potable water fill on site. For a quick dump and fill between trips, most Flying J and Pilot truck stops along I-81 near Scranton offer dump services. Pro tip: ask your host to demonstrate dumping and filling during your walkthrough, and pack a pair of disposable gloves and a clear sewer elbow so you can see when the tank is fully rinsed. It's the cleanest part of the trip when you do it right.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/PromisedLandStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities come with a typical motorhome rental in Forest City?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Forest City comes fully equipped: a real bed (often a queen, plus convertible dinette and bunks in larger Class C rigs), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, heating, air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts also include a generator, outdoor awning, propane fire pit, leveling blocks, and bedding/towels. WiFi and TVs vary by listing, so check the amenities tab. Campervan rental Forest City options are more compact but still include sleeping, cooking, and often a portable toilet. Pro tip: filter for the exact sleeps count you need on RVezy and message the host to confirm what's included so you don't double-pack kitchen gear.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/RecreationalActivities/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts make it really easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linen and kitchen packages ($25-$75), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($10-$25), generators and extra propane ($25-$50/day), bikes, kayaks, and even Starlink WiFi on some rigs. Mileage policies vary: some hosts include 100-150 free miles per day with a small per-mile fee beyond, while others offer unlimited mileage, ideal for an RV road trip from Forest City to the Finger Lakes or down to the Delaware Water Gap. Pickup is usually at the host's location in or near Forest City, but delivery to your campground is widely available. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during booking rather than adding them last-minute; hosts often discount packages when you book everything together.
visitnepa.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, so no cash changes hands with the host. A separate refundable security deposit is also held (the amount varies by rig and protection plan) and is released back to your card after the trip, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any issues, do a detailed walkthrough at both pickup and drop-off, take date-stamped photos and short videos inside and out, and return the RV with fuel and tanks per the host's instructions. Pro tip: keep all gas and propane receipts so any disputes are easy to resolve quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Forest City during winter for snow trips?
Yes, and winter is a hidden gem here. Forest City sits in PA's snowbelt and is minutes from some of the best snowmobiling trails in the state, including the State Game Lands and the D&H Rail Trail corridor. Elk Mountain Ski Resort is just 20 minutes north, making this a fantastic ski-and-stay basecamp. Look for hosts whose listings mention four-season use, heated and enclosed tanks, and 30/50-amp shore power; these features are essential when temperatures drop into the teens. Many winter-friendly campgrounds close, but Keen Lake offers limited winter access and some private RV sites stay open year-round. Pro tip: book a rig with a built-in furnace plus an electric space heater, and stay at a full-hookup site so your water lines stay flowing all weekend.
