Campgrounds and RV parks near Gap, PA

The Strasburg Rail Road, billed as America's oldest continuously operating railroad, runs steam excursions through Amish farmland and hosts seasonal events including Day Out With Thomas, wine and cheese rides, and Christmas trains. Directly across the road, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania holds a large collection of restored locomotives and rail cars. Families with younger kids often build a day around Dutch Wonderland amusement park on Route 30, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, and Sight & Sound Theatres in Ronks. Kitchen Kettle Village in Intercourse and the Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market are good stops for Pennsylvania Dutch food, buggy rides, and local crafts. Many Amish-owned businesses close on Sundays, so plan shopping and dining accordingly.

Peak RV season in the Gap area runs from Memorial Day through mid-October. Summer brings warm, humid weather and the fullest event calendar at the Strasburg Rail Road, Dutch Wonderland, and area farms. Weekends around July 4, the Rough and Tumble Thresherman's Reunion in Kinzers, and back-to-school weekends fill up first, so book several weeks ahead. Spring and fall are the most comfortable travel windows. May through June and mid-August through mid-October are widely considered the best times to visit Lancaster County, with lower humidity, harvest activity, and fall foliage on the countryside drives. Christmas trains and holiday light events extend the shoulder season into December. Winter is quiet. Some private parks close or limit services from November through March, though The Loose Caboose Campground lists year-round operation. Snow is possible from December through March, and overnight lows regularly fall below freezing, so travelers running water hookups in winter should plan for cold-weather protection.

Expect rolling farmland, narrow rural roads, and horse-and-buggy traffic. Slow down on Route 340, Route 741, and the back roads between Gap, Intercourse, and Strasburg, especially near dawn, dusk, and on Sundays when Amish families are traveling to and from church. Sites at parks like The Loose Caboose Campground tend to be spacious and wooded, while resort-style properties such as Spring Gulch RV Campground offer pools, planned activities, and cabin rentals alongside RV hookups. Cell coverage is generally solid along Route 30 but can weaken on side roads. Grocery runs, propane, and RV supplies are easy to find in nearby Gap, Paradise, and New Holland. Cash is useful at roadside farm stands, some of which run on the honor system.
