Campgrounds and RV parks near Gilberton, PA

Water and trails dominate the local activity list. At Locust Lake State Park, a small sand beach permits swimming, the lake receives seasonal trout stocking, and multiple hiking trails connect to neighboring Tuscarora State Park, with a paved lake loop that serves both pedestrians and cyclists. Visitors can bring their own boats, with electric motors permitted subject to restrictions, and swimming is only allowed at the designated swimming beach. Private campgrounds add pool-and-playground amenities that travel well with kids. Rosemount Camping Resort provides full hookups, laundry, a swimming pool, grills, picnic tables, a playground, and pet-friendly sites, and Camp-A-While has RV and tent sites with a stocked catch-and-release pond, on-site events every weekend, volleyball, basketball, horseshoes, a nature trail, and a pool open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Off-site, Pottsville, Jim Thorpe, and the Appalachian Trail are all within easy driving range for day trips.

The camping window here is tightly seasonal. The Locust Lake State Park campground opens in early April and closes in mid-October, and private parks in the area follow a similar rhythm, with Rosemount Camping Resort operating from April through October and Camp-A-While running a similar April-to-October season. Winter camping options are limited, and most amenities, including camp stores and boat rentals, run only during the warm months. Late spring and early summer bring the wettest conditions of the year, with thunderstorms common from May through August. July and August are warm, humid, and busy, especially on weekends and around the July 4 holiday. Weekday reservations are easier to secure than Friday and Saturday nights. Early fall is the sweet spot for many RV renters. Days cool off, humidity drops, and foliage color builds through late September and October. Fires are only permitted in grills and fire rings, and complete fire bans are possible during dry periods, so check park alerts before travel.

Sites are wooded and rustic in character. At Locust Lake, all campsites are in a wooded area and include a parking pad, picnic table, fire ring, and cleared area for camping equipment, with pets permitted at designated sites for a fee. Campground conveniences include modern restrooms and shower houses, a sanitary dump station on the south side of the lake, and three play areas within the campground. The Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks manages the campground, which accommodates RVs up to 50 feet with full hookups available on select sites. Parking and connectivity are the two most common surprises. Parking is limited throughout Locust Lake State Park, dropping off passengers at the beach is prohibited, all day-use visitors must park at the entrance, and visitors should be prepared to walk up to one-half of a mile with their belongings. Cell service is limited or nonexistent in many areas, so download park maps and directions before arrival.
