Campgrounds near Gratz, Pennsylvania
Gratz is a small borough in northern Dauphin County, tucked into the ridge-and-valley landscape between the Mahantango and Berry mountains. It sits north of Harrisburg and Hershey, which puts most trip-worthy campgrounds within a 30 to 45 minute drive. The area mixes private RV resorts, faith-based retreats, and small family parks, with Pennsylvania state game lands and the Appalachian Trail corridor nearby for hiking and day trips.
Twin Grove RV Resort and Cottages, in Pine Grove, is the largest full-service option within a reasonable radius and sits adjacent to Swatara State Park. Camp Hebron, in Halifax, is a Christian camp and conference center on 340 wooded acres north of Harrisburg, with a campground for RVs and tents. Jonestown / Hershey NE KOA Journey provides a familiar chain-standard stop close to Hershey attractions, while Lake Heron Retreat and Penn Avon Campground round out the smaller, locally run options.
Most travelers use Gratz as a base for visiting Hershey, exploring the Susquehanna River valley, or reaching Amish Country in Lancaster County within about an hour's drive.
Things to do near Gratz
Outdoor activity centers on the ridges and waterways around the borough. The Appalachian Trail crosses nearby Peters Mountain, and state game lands north and east of Gratz offer hiking, birding, and fall foliage drives. Powell's Creek and the Susquehanna River give paddlers and anglers easy access to flatwater and smallmouth bass fishing.
Families traveling with kids typically pair a campground stay with Hersheypark, ZooAmerica, and Hershey's Chocolate World, all roughly 30 minutes south. Twin Grove RV Resort and Cottages runs its own small amusement section with a carousel, Ferris wheel, and trackless train, plus a challenging 18-hole disc golf course recognized as one of the best in the area. Camp Hebron adds a seasonal swimming pool, sand volleyball, basketball, and playground within its property.
Gratz itself hosts the annual Gratz Fair each September, a long-running community event with rides, livestock exhibits, and food.

The camping season in this part of central Pennsylvania runs roughly from mid-April through mid-October at most seasonal parks. Camp Hebron, for example, is open from mid-April to mid-October, with a spring season from mid-April until Memorial Day weekend, a summer season through Labor Day weekend, and a fall season after Labor Day through mid-October. Twin Grove operates year-round and is a good stopping point for snowbird migrations, though its rides, pools, and food service run on reduced hours outside peak summer.
Summer weekends, especially those tied to Hersheypark visits, book out fastest. Fall brings cool nights, foliage color across the ridges, and the Gratz Fair in September. Winter camping is limited: most private parks close or operate only limited hookup sites, and nighttime lows often drop below freezing.
Spring and early summer can be wet, with May typically the rainiest month by number of rain days, so travelers should plan for muddy sites and pack rain gear for hikes on the Appalachian Trail.

How to book campgrounds in the Gratz area
Private campgrounds around Gratz each use their own systems. Twin Grove RV Resort and Cottages, Lake Heron Retreat, and Penn Avon Campground take reservations directly through their websites or by phone, with peak summer weekends often filling weeks in advance. Jonestown / Hershey NE KOA Journey uses the standard KOA reservation platform. Camp Hebron requires a minimum two-night stay and allows a maximum of ten consecutive nights, and its campground is pet and alcohol free.
For public land alternatives, most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival. A two-night stay is required on weekend reservations during summer, and there is a 14-night stay maximum, with a 21-day maximum for the rest of the year.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the area range from full-hookup pull-throughs at destination resorts to primitive, wooded tent pads. Twin Grove features spacious, level RV sites, many big-rig friendly, with water, sewer, and 20/30/50 amp electric service. Expect a busy, family-focused atmosphere on summer weekends, with organized activities and weekend entertainment.
Camp Hebron is quieter, with 38 wooded campsites near Mountain View Lake and Powell's Creek. Eleven sites have full RV hookups, 13 have electricity, and 14 are primitive tent sites, with a heated bathhouse and a dump station on site. Sites sit close together with minimal separation, and the campground regularly hosts large youth groups arriving by bus during peak times, so travelers seeking solitude may prefer weekday stays outside peak season.
Cell service can be spotty in the ridges north of Gratz. Grocery runs are easiest in Halifax, Elizabethville, or Lykens, and larger stores are in the Harrisburg suburbs to the south.

Canada trips may be allowed but require host approval and possible insurance adjustments, so message the host before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches run 6 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves, but towing drops your truck's mileage by 30 to 40 percent. Pennsylvania gas prices typically sit slightly above the national average (around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon in 2025), with cheaper stations along Route 209 in Millersburg and I-81 near Harrisburg. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: GasBuddy reliably finds the cheapest pumps in Dauphin and Schuylkill counties.

Pennsylvania state parks like Memorial Lake and Tuscarora open reservations 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and summer weekends genuinely sell out within days of opening, especially around July 4th and Labor Day. Private parks like Twin Grove RV Resort and Hidden Springs typically take bookings 6 to 12 months out. For shoulder-season trips (April, May, late September, October), 3 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: midweek stays are far easier to grab last-minute, and Sunday-to-Thursday rates are often 20 percent lower than weekend pricing.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Gratz, PA?
Driving an RV around Gratz is refreshingly relaxed compared to big-city RV travel. The main routes (PA-25, PA-209, and US-22/322) are well-paved, two-lane country roads with gentle ridges through the Mahantongo and Lykens Valleys. Watch for low-clearance bridges in older boroughs like Millersburg (some under 11 feet), so know your RV's height before you go. Winter brings snow and ice from December to March, so most renters stick to April through November. Deer are common at dawn and dusk along Route 25, so cruise easy and use high beams when you can. Pro tip: avoid Hersheypark traffic on summer Saturdays by routing through Halifax and Dauphin instead of I-81.

Private parks like Twin Grove RV Resort and Hidden Springs Campground offer full hookups (water, electric 30/50-amp, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, camp stores, and dump stations. State park campgrounds such as Memorial Lake typically offer electric-only sites with a central potable water fill and dump station near the entrance. If you're boondocking in Weiser State Forest, plan to arrive with full fresh water and empty holding tanks. Pro tip: the Flying J in Frackville (40 minutes east via I-81) has a public dump station and propane refill, making it a handy mid-trip pit stop on any Susquehanna Valley loop.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat features and amenities can I expect inside the RV?
RVs on RVezy come surprisingly well-stocked for your Gratz adventure. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stovetop, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size, air conditioning, propane furnace, and a dinette that often converts to extra sleeping space. Many listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and an awning, and a growing number of hosts offer generators or solar setups for off-grid stays in Weiser State Forest. Seatbelted seating for travel varies by RV, so confirm the count if your group needs to travel together. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and amenities to narrow down quickly to the right campervan rental Gratz fit.
nps.gov/subjects/camping/rv-camping.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
RVezy hosts in Gratz, PA make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons include camping chairs and tables ($10 to $25 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, generators ($25 to $50 per day), bikes, kayaks, and outdoor grills. Pickup is typically at the host's home or a nearby meeting spot in Gratz, Lykens, or Elizabethville, and dropoff usually mirrors pickup unless you've arranged delivery. One-way trips are occasionally possible but require host approval, so message first if you're dreaming of a Gratz-to-Poconos drop. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a generator turns a family RV trip Gratz into a true turnkey experience, with zero towing or setup required.
visitpa.com/things-to-do/outdoor-adventuresHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Gratz RV rental?
Payment for your RV rental in Gratz, PA is processed securely through RVezy, never in cash to the host. The booking total is charged through the platform, and the host's security deposit is handled separately as a hold on your card before pickup and released after dropoff once the host confirms the RV came back in the same condition. Add-ons, extra mileage, or refueling shortfalls can be deducted from the deposit. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos inside and out at pickup and dropoff, do a careful walkthrough with your host, and refill propane and fuel before returning to keep your deposit refund moving fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Gratz during the winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Gratz, PA are possible, though the selection is smaller since many hosts pause listings December through February. If you're up for the adventure, look for four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces, and confirm with the host that the unit is winterized for sub-freezing nights (Gratz routinely hits 15 to 25°F in January). Pair it with a campground that offers winter shore power such as a few sites at Twin Grove RV Resort. Pro tip: snowy weekends near Roundtop Mountain Resort (1 hour south) or the Pocono ski areas (2 hours east) make for an unforgettable cold-weather RV camping Gratz trip the whole family will remember.
