Camping near Hegins, Pennsylvania
Hegins sits in western Schuylkill County in Pennsylvania's Ridge-and-Valley region, at the base of the mountains that separate the Mahantango and Mahanoy valleys. The village is agricultural and small, with easy access from Interstate 81 and Route 25 running through the valley floor. Pottsville, the county seat, is under twenty miles east.
RV travelers use Hegins as a quiet, wooded base for exploring central Pennsylvania coal country, state parks, and the Appalachian Trail corridor. Private options within a short drive include Camp-A-While in Hegins itself, Echo Valley Campground in nearby Tremont, and Twin Grove RV Resort and Cottages to the south. Camp Swatara and the Jonestown / Hershey NE KOA Journey extend the search into Lebanon County for travelers heading toward Hershey.
Terrain around Hegins involves steep grades and narrow interior roads at some campgrounds, so larger rigs should plan the approach carefully and drive slowly on the mountain sections.
Things to do near Hegins
Two state parks anchor the outdoor options. Locust Lake State Park wraps a 52-acre lake with wooded camping loops, a swim beach, and a boat launch, while adjacent Tuscarora State Park adds hiking trails, yurts, and camping cottages on Locust Mountain. Both parks share a visitor center and lie within a short drive of Hegins.
The Appalachian National Scenic Trail crosses the ridge system south and east of town, and Weiser State Forest offers thousands of acres of state forest land across several counties for day hikes and dispersed exploration. Rausch Creek Off-Road Park draws OHV users to a large local trail system.
Families staying at Camp-A-While or Twin Grove RV Resort and Cottages typically use on-site pools, playgrounds, and weekend events; Hershey and its attractions are roughly an hour south.

The main RV camping season in this part of Pennsylvania runs from early April through mid-October. Locust Lake State Park's campground opens in early April and closes in mid-October, and Tuscarora State Park's six camping cottages and four yurts operate from April through mid-October. Private parks like Camp-A-While run weekend activities across the full warm-weather season.
Summer is the busiest window. Weekends fill early at both state and private campgrounds, especially around July 4 and Labor Day, and Tuscarora's yurts and deluxe cottages typically require a longer minimum stay during peak summer. Spring and fall offer easier availability, cooler nights, and strong fall foliage across the ridges in October.
Winter operations are limited. Most private campgrounds close or reduce services after October, though state park day-use areas remain open sunrise to sunset year round. Expect snow, ice, and freezing overnight temperatures from December through February.

How to book campgrounds near Hegins
Pennsylvania state park sites at Locust Lake and Tuscarora are reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica, or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Reservations can be made up to eleven months in advance to noon on the day of arrival, and Tuscarora requires booking at least three days ahead of arrival. Peak-summer stays for yurts and deluxe cottages typically require a longer minimum-night reservation.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Camp-A-While, Echo Valley Campground, Twin Grove RV Resort and Cottages, Camp Swatara, and the Jonestown / Hershey NE KOA Journey, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Calling ahead is recommended for full-hookup RV sites and cabin rentals, particularly on holiday weekends when seasonal campers occupy much of the inventory.

Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for recreational vehicles operated for personal use, so your standard Class C license covers the entire RVezy fleet. penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Hegins to park my RV?
The best campgrounds near Hegins are surprisingly close and well-equipped for RV camping Hegins style. Camp-A-While Campground (1921 East Main Street) is the local favorite with 136 full-hookup RV sites, a pool, stocked fishing pond, and weekend events from mid-April through October. Swatara State Park, 20 minutes south, offers quieter, more rustic camping along the Swatara Creek. Locust Lake State Park (about 30 minutes east) has 282 sites tucked into a hardwood forest with a swimming beach. Splash Magic RV Resort and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort are also within easy reach for family-friendly fun. Pro tip: book Camp-A-While weekends 6 to 8 weeks ahead during summer because they fill up fast.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LocustLakeStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year for a Hegins RV trip?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Hegins, PA, with the absolute peak being September and early October when the Schuylkill County hardwoods explode in red, orange, and gold. Summer highs sit in the low 80s Fahrenheit (around 27 to 29 C), and nights cool down to the 60s, perfect for campfires. Spring brings wildflowers and trout-stocked streams but can be muddy, while winters drop into the 20s and 30s with regular snow, so most campgrounds (including Camp-A-While) close by October 31. Insider tip: the Schuylkill County Wine Festival at Hegins Park every September is a fantastic reason to time your trip just right.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Hegins?
You'll do great, and Hegins is honestly one of the friendlier places in Pennsylvania for first time renting an RV. Country roads, light traffic, and forgiving campgrounds make this a low-stress training ground. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the propane, water, slide-outs, generator, and waste system before you drive off, and they're a text message away during your trip. The Hegins Valley is mostly flat with gentle grades on PA-25, so you won't be white-knuckling mountain passes. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick driveway practice loop, and watch a few RVezy YouTube walk-through videos the night before. Confidence builds fast.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on PA-25 or a dead battery at the trailhead is just a phone call away from being solved. The roadside team can dispatch help for towing, jump-starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fluid delivery anywhere in the U.S. Your host is also a great first call for quick RV-specific questions like resetting a GFCI outlet or relighting the water heater. Pro tip: save the RVezy support line and your host's number in your phone before you leave so help is one tap away on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hegins RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is the whole point of an RV road trip from Hegins, and most RVezy hosts happily allow trips into New York, New Jersey, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and beyond. With I-81 right at Exit 112, you're about 3 hours from NYC, 2.5 hours from Philadelphia, and 3 hours from Washington, D.C. Cross-border trips into Canada are sometimes allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a popular 7-day loop from Hegins runs through the Pocono Mountains, Catskills, and Finger Lakes, and it's stunning in early October.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Hegins RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger line items, but easy to plan for. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon, with diesel a bit higher, and Hegins sits along a corridor of competitively priced stations off I-81 (Pilot in Pine Grove and Sheetz in Tremont are local favorites). Expect 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A or Class C motorhome, 12 to 18 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer, and 18 to 22 MPG for a campervan rental Hegins. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop you're looking at roughly $130 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: GasBuddy and the Sheetz app help you find the cheapest fill-ups along PA-25 and PA-209.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Hegins?
For summer weekends and fall foliage season, lock in your campsite 2 to 4 months ahead, especially at Camp-A-While Campground and any Pennsylvania state park. Pennsylvania State Parks (Swatara, Locust Lake, Tuscarora) open reservations 11 months in advance through the official PA State Parks reservation system, and prime sites on holiday weekends disappear within hours. Private parks like Camp-A-While and Yogi Bear's Jellystone take bookings directly on their websites and usually need 6 to 8 weeks for peak dates. Mid-week stays are far easier; you can often grab a site a few days out. Pro tip: book your RV first on RVezy, then your campsite, so you know exact length and hookup needs.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhat are the driving conditions like around Hegins?
Driving around Hegins is genuinely relaxed, which is great news for an RV. PA-25 (East Main Street) is a wide, gentle two-lane that runs straight through the valley, and Interstate 81 at Exit 112 gives you quick highway access without urban congestion. The biggest things to watch for are deer at dawn and dusk (Schuylkill County has plenty), occasional Amish horse-and-buggy traffic on backroads, and winter snow squalls between November and March that can reduce visibility on I-81. Summer thunderstorms can pop up fast in the afternoons, so check the radar before you tow. Pro tip: PennDOT's 511PA traffic app gives real-time road conditions and camera views along your entire route, which is gold for RV drivers.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hegins?
Local campgrounds are well set up for a smooth RV camping Hegins experience. Camp-A-While offers full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer) at most of its 136 sites, plus an on-site dump station, fresh water fill, laundry, hot showers, a camp store, and a heated pool. Pennsylvania state parks like Locust Lake and Tuscarora provide electric hookups, modern restrooms, dump stations, and potable water fills, though most state park sites don't have individual sewer. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the mountains, so download maps and shows ahead. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground because finding a public fill spot mid-trip in rural Schuylkill County can take a detour.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Hegins?
Even the most budget-friendly cheap RV rental Hegins listings come surprisingly well-equipped. Expect a full kitchen with a propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink; a bathroom with toilet and shower; queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and bunks (most rigs sleep 4 to 8); roof-mounted air conditioning; propane furnace; and seatbelts for travel. Many travel trailers and Class C motorhomes on RVezy in the Hegins area also include outdoor speakers, awnings, TVs, and some have onboard generators or solar for off-grid weekends. Wi-Fi hotspots and bike racks are common add-ons. Pro tip: scroll the amenities list on each listing carefully so you know exactly what's included before your family RV trip Hegins.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rvsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Hegins offer a great menu of add-ons that make life on the road easier. Popular extras include linen and towel packages ($25 to $60), camp chairs and tables ($15 to $30), generators ($25 to $50 per day), bike racks, kayaks, and full kitchen kits with pots, pans, and coffee makers. Pickup is usually at the host's home address near Hegins, Valley View, or Tremont, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Most hosts allow flexible pickup windows between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mileage is set per listing and clearly visible on the booking page. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus setup plus a linen package on your first trip; the small upcharge buys huge convenience.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Hegins on RVezy, you'll pay the nightly rate, service fee, and chosen protection package by credit or debit card directly through the platform, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, not charged outright, and is released back to you after a clean, damage-free return. To avoid any issues, do a quick walk-around photo check at pickup and drop-off with your host. Pro tip: refill the fuel tank to the level shown at pickup and dump waste tanks before returning to skip refueling and cleaning fees.
