Camping near Hershey, Pennsylvania
Hershey sits in Dauphin County in south-central Pennsylvania, about fifteen miles east of Harrisburg and within a short drive of Lancaster County. The area draws RV travelers primarily because of Hersheypark, Hershey's Chocolate World, ZooAmerica, and the Hershey Gardens complex, but it also functions as a practical base for exploring the Susquehanna River corridor, Amish country to the east, and Gettysburg to the south.
Campground options cluster tightly around the theme park and along the US-322 and I-81 corridors. Hersheypark Camping Resort is the closest to the park entrance and operates as an official on-property resort. Hershey Road Campground and Hershey RV and Camping Resort sit within a short drive, while the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday and Harrisburg East Campground add capacity on either side of the city for travelers who want a slightly quieter base with easy highway access.
Most private campgrounds in the area accommodate large Class A rigs and travel trailers, and full hookups are widely available at the resort-style properties.
Things to do near Hershey
Hersheypark anchors most itineraries, with roller coasters, a water park, and ZooAmerica bundled into a single admission. Hershey's Chocolate World, adjacent to the park, is free to enter and runs the factory tour ride, a trolley tour of the town, and a create-your-own-candy-bar station. Families with younger children often split time between the theme park and Hershey Gardens or the Hershey Story Museum on Chocolate Avenue.
Outside town, Gifford Pinchot State Park offers a lake for swimming, fishing, and paddling, plus miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails. Day trips to Gettysburg National Military Park, the Amish farmlands around Lancaster and Strasburg, and the Appalachian Trail crossings near Duncannon are all within an hour's drive.

Hersheypark opens for spring weekends in early April and shifts to daily operations from late May through Labor Day. The Boardwalk water park runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Late May through August is peak family travel, and campgrounds within a few miles of the park fill quickly on weekends, especially around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and the first weeks of August. Booking two to three months out is common for full-hookup sites in summer.
Spring and fall are noticeably quieter. April and May bring mild temperatures and wildflowers, though rainy stretches are common. September and October pair comfortable daytime temperatures with fall foliage across the surrounding ridges, and Hersheypark shifts into Halloween-themed weekend operations.
Winter is the shoulder season. Hersheypark Camping Resort operates year-round and runs holiday-themed packages tied to the Christmas Candylane event that begins in mid-November. Nearby state park campgrounds, including Gifford Pinchot, typically close from late October through mid-April.

How to book a campsite near Hershey
Private campgrounds around Hershey take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Hersheypark Camping Resort books through the Hersheypark reservations system and often bundles theme park tickets, shuttle service, and early park access into resort packages. KOA properties, including the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday, use the KOA.com reservation platform.
Pennsylvania state parks in the region, such as Gifford Pinchot, use the state's reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. Most sites can be booked up to eleven months in advance to noon of the day of arrival, and popular summer weekends often sell out within days of opening. A nonrefundable transaction fee applies to each state park reservation.
For peak-summer visits, holiday weekends, and the Christmas Candylane period, reserving well in advance is recommended. Cancellation policies vary by property, so review terms before booking.
What to expect on the ground
The Hershey area is developed suburban terrain, not backcountry. Roads into the campgrounds are paved and handle large RVs without difficulty, and grocery stores, dump stations, propane, and RV service are all available within a short drive. Traffic on Hersheypark Drive and Route 39 can back up during park opening and closing hours in summer, so timing arrivals outside those windows helps.
Sites at the resort-style campgrounds tend to be closer together than at state parks, with paved or gravel pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. Shade varies by loop. Cell service is reliable across the region, and most campgrounds offer Wi-Fi, though speeds slow when the campground is full.
Insects, ticks, and occasional black bear activity are typical for central Pennsylvania. Standard food storage and repellent precautions apply.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Hershey, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hershey, PA?
Great news: an RV rental in Hershey, PA can fit almost any vacation budget. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs hover around $250 to $400 per night. Hosts set their own pricing, so you'll see the all-in nightly rate before you book. To find a cheap RV rental in Hershey, travel midweek, aim for shoulder months like late April or September, and use the price filter to sort listings. Pro tip: booking a travel trailer with delivery to Hersheypark Camping Resort often costs less than a drivable motorhome and saves you the towing learning curve.
visithersheyharrisburg.org/hotels/campgrounds/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Hershey?
Good news: a regular Class C Pennsylvania driver's license (or the equivalent from your home state or country) is all you need for almost every RV on RVezy. Pennsylvania only requires a Non-Commercial Class B license if a single RV has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, which excludes essentially all rentals on the platform. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking process. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) before your trip. Most first-time renters in Hershey choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer and are pleasantly surprised how straightforward the paperwork is.
pa.gov/agencies/dmv/driver-services.htmlIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Hershey, PA booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real peace of mind that a handshake rental can't match. You choose your level of coverage at checkout (RVezy offers multiple tiers), so you can pick what fits your comfort level. If a tire blows on Route 322 or the fridge stops cooling at Hersheypark Camping Resort, one call to RVezy roadside gets help dispatched. Pro tip: review the protection options carefully at booking and consider a higher tier for your first Hershey RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Hershey RV rental?
Booking is lower-risk than you'd think. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and refund amounts depend on how far before your trip you cancel, so the earlier you decide, the more flexibility you keep. If your plans change due to weather, a Hersheypark closure, or another disruption in central Pennsylvania, contact RVezy support through the Help Center right away to review your options. Pro tip: read the cancellation policy in the RVezy Help Center before you book so you know exactly what to expect.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Hershey RV trip?
Absolutely. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Hershey are available on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and trailers whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Hosts set their own pet rules and may charge a small pet fee, which is shown upfront. Hershey is a great dog town: Hersheypark Camping Resort welcomes leashed pets at most sites, and nearby Gifford Pinchot State Park allows pets at designated campsites with lake trails to explore. ZooAmerica doesn't allow pets, but Hershey Gardens has dog-friendly outdoor paths on select days. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm your dog's size and breed are a fit, and ask which off-leash areas they recommend.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/GiffordPinchotStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Hershey?
Yes, RV delivery in Hershey is one of the most popular options on RVezy and a great choice for first-time renters. Many hosts will drive the RV to Hersheypark Camping Resort, Hershey Road Campground in Elizabethtown, or Thousand Trails Hershey in Lebanon, level it, hook up water and power, and give you a full walkthrough before leaving. Use the Delivery filter to see which listings offer it; fees are set by each host and shown upfront, often as a per-mile rate or flat fee within a set radius. That means no driving a 30-foot rig through Hershey's roundabouts on Hersheypark Drive. Pro tip: ask your host to deliver near the campground's shuttle stop so you can walk to the park gates.
hersheypark.com/stay-and-play/camping-resort/How far can I drive on an RV trip from Hershey?
You can roam widely on a Hershey RV trip thanks to its central Mid-Atlantic location. Popular RV road trip routes from Hershey include Gettysburg National Military Park (about 55 miles southwest), Lancaster's Amish Country (about 35 miles south), the Pocono Mountains (around 90 miles northeast), Washington D.C. (roughly 130 miles south), and Niagara Falls (about 320 miles northwest). Each host sets a mileage policy: many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles billed around $0.30 to $0.45. Some listings even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for longer loops. Pro tip: filter by unlimited mileage if you're chaining Gettysburg, Hershey, and Lancaster into one Pennsylvania Dutch Country circuit.
nps.gov/gett/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Hershey for an RV?
The best campgrounds near Hershey cover every style of camper. Hersheypark Camping Resort sits about a mile from the park gates with full hookups and seasonal shuttle service; it's the top pick for families visiting the park. Hershey Road Campground in Elizabethtown is a family and pet-friendly park with a pool and modern amenities. Thousand Trails Hershey in Lebanon offers spacious sites on farmland a short drive from Chocolate World. For state-park vibes, Gifford Pinchot State Park (about 30 miles southwest) offers lakeside sites and a swimming beach. Pro tip: Hersheypark Camping Resort books up fast for July weekends, so reserve as soon as you confirm your RV camping Hershey dates.
hersheypark.com/stay-and-play/camping-resort/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Hershey?
The sweet spots for an RV rental in Hershey, PA are late April through mid-June and mid-August through mid-October. Spring brings mild 60 to 75°F days, blooming gardens, and easier campground availability. Summer (late June through mid-August) is peak Hersheypark season with highs around 84 to 87°F, humid afternoons, and the water park in full swing, though crowds and rates run higher. Fall is the local insider favorite: crisp 55 to 70°F days, the AACA Fall Meet in October at the Giant Center, and gorgeous foliage drives through Lancaster County. Winters get cold (lows around 22°F with snow), but the Hershey Sweet Lights drive-through holiday display is worth booking a winter-ready rig for.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Hershey?
You'll be fine, and Hershey is honestly one of the easiest places in the Northeast to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the dump valves, so you're never left guessing. First-time renting an RV? Pick a Class C motorhome or a travel trailer under 25 feet, then book a host who offers delivery so your only job is to relax. Hershey's main routes (US-422, US-322, and PA-743) are wide, well-paved, and largely flat. Avoid the narrow downtown loop around Chocolate Avenue at rush hour. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot practice loop at the Hershey Park & Ride before heading out.
penndot.pa.gov/Pages/default.aspxWhat if something breaks down during my Hershey RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the PA Turnpike, a dead battery at Pinch Pond Family Campground, or a propane issue at Hersheypark Camping Resort is one phone call away from help. Roadside can dispatch help for mechanical issues, towing, lockouts, jump-starts, and tire changes. For appliance hiccups (fridge, AC, water pump), message your host first; most have quick fixes they can walk you through. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip via the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you pull out of the host's driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hershey RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, multi-state RV road trips from Hershey are a blast. Most hosts welcome travel throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast: think Maryland (Assateague Island is about 200 miles away), West Virginia, New York's Finger Lakes, and the New Jersey shore. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and your protection plan, so confirm in a pre-booking message. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a classic loop from Hershey runs through Gettysburg, then Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (about 200 miles southwest), and back via Harpers Ferry on interstate-quality routes the whole way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Hershey RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's predictable. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves, but tow vehicles average 10 to 13 MPG; Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG; Class A rigs get 6 to 9 MPG. Pennsylvania gasoline averages roughly $3.30 to $3.70 per gallon (diesel slightly higher), and you'll find plenty of RV-friendly stations along US-322 in Hershey, US-422 toward Reading, and at the Highspire Travel Plaza on the PA Turnpike. For a 4-day, 300-mile loop in a Class C, budget around $120 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: use GasBuddy or the Hershey Sheetz near Hersheypark for some of the cheapest fill-ups in town.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hershey?
For peak season, sooner is better. Pennsylvania state parks like Gifford Pinchot and Memorial Lake allow reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and popular weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day) fill within days. Hersheypark Camping Resort opens bookings months ahead and sells out for summer Saturdays by spring. For shoulder season (April, May, September, October), 4 to 8 weeks out is usually plenty. Walk-up sites do exist at some private parks midweek. Pro tip: if your dates are locked, book the campground first, then the RV; some hosts will adjust pickup timing once they see your reservation confirmation.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat are local driving conditions like around Hershey?
Driving in and around Hershey is mostly easy going, even for newer RV drivers. The main arteries (US-322, US-422, I-83, and the PA Turnpike I-76) are flat, four-lane, and well-maintained. The Hersheypark Drive roundabout can feel busy on summer Saturdays, so aim for morning or evening transit. Watch height clearances on older bridges around downtown Hershey (most are 12 feet or higher, but a tall Class A should stick to designated truck routes). Winter brings snow and occasional black ice from December through February, so cold-month renters should ask hosts about snow tires. Pro tip: avoid the Hershey-Hummelstown area at 4 to 5 p.m. on park days when Chocolate World traffic peaks.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at Hershey-area campgrounds?
Hershey-area campgrounds are well equipped for a smooth RV stay. Hersheypark Camping Resort, Hershey Road Campground, and Thousand Trails Hershey all offer full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, sewer), dump stations, hot showers, laundry, camp stores, and Wi-Fi at most sites. Potable water fill stations are at every entrance. Gifford Pinchot State Park has modern restrooms, electric sites, and a dump station near the campground exit. Pennsylvania prohibits bringing outside firewood to prevent insect spread, so plan to buy local bundles at the camp store on arrival. Pro tip: dump your tanks the morning you leave (lines are shortest before 9 a.m.) and top up fresh water at the same time so you arrive home ready to clean up.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat's included inside the RV itself?
Hershey RV rentals come surprisingly well-stocked. Expect a real bed (often a queen plus convertible dinette/bunks sleeping 4 to 8), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink, and basic cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; air conditioning and furnace; seatbelts for travel passengers; and usually a TV. Many motorhome rental Hershey listings also include a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, and outdoor griddle. Wi-Fi varies, but cell coverage is strong throughout the Hershey/Harrisburg region so a hotspot works well. Hosts list exact inventory on each listing, and most provide linens and kitchen kits as either included or low-cost add-ons. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count and check the photo gallery to confirm bed layout matches your group.
visithersheyharrisburg.org/hotels/campgrounds/What add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
Hershey hosts offer a generous menu of add-ons that make life easier. Common options include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, bike racks, camping chairs, generators, propane refills, portable grills, and Hersheypark ticket bundles. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the Hershey, Hummelstown, Palmyra, or Harrisburg area, with a 30- to 60-minute walkthrough included. Drop-off is the reverse, and Instant Book listings let you skip the back-and-forth approval step. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night up to unlimited, and generator hours are often capped (typically 3 to 5 free hours/day). Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a kitchen kit; the total often beats packing it all yourself by plane or rental car.
visithersheyharrisburg.org/hotels/campgrounds/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is simple and fully online: you pay through the secure platform when you book, not in cash to the host. Each host sets a refundable security deposit (often a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on RV size and value), which is placed as a hold on your card before the trip and released after drop-off, assuming no damage or excess cleaning. The renter protection plan you choose covers most accidental damage, so the deposit is really just a small backstop. To avoid issues: do the walkthrough together at pickup, return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted on the contract, and empty the tanks at a dump station. Pro tip: take a quick 60-second video of the interior and exterior at pickup and drop-off; it's the easiest way to ensure your deposit comes back fast.
