Camping near Hokendauqua, Pennsylvania
Hokendauqua is a small community in Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, sitting along the Lehigh River just north of Allentown. RV renters use it as a practical base for the Lehigh Valley: Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton are all within a short drive, and the Pocono Mountains, Jim Thorpe, and the Delaware Water Gap sit less than an hour to the north and east.
The camping mix reflects that suburban-to-rural transition. Family-run parks like Moyers Lake and Campground and Evergreen Lake Campground offer lake sites within the valley, while Allentown KOA Journey in New Tripoli includes cabins plus full-hookup and water-and-electric RV sites and is positioned for day trips to New York City, Philadelphia, Amish Country, and the Poconos. Don Laine Campground near Palmerton pushes closer to the mountains, and Quaker Woods Campground extends the range south toward Bucks County.
The area sits at elevations ranging from roughly 250 to 1,000 feet above sea level, with humid summers and moderately cold winters that shape both the camping season and what to pack.
Things to do around Hokendauqua
Outdoor days center on the Lehigh River corridor and the ridges to the north. The D&L Trail runs along the river for rail-trail biking and running, and the Appalachian Trail crosses Blue Mountain a short drive north. Allentown KOA Journey has an on-site nature trail, with longer hikes on the Appalachian Trail nearby. State-park day trips to Beltzville, Jacobsburg, and Hickory Run add swimming, fishing, and waterfall hikes.
Family attractions concentrate in the valley. Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom brings roller coasters and wave pools, and other nearby options include the Crayola Experience in Easton, Cabela's in Hamburg, and the Lehigh Valley Zoo. Historic Bethlehem, Jim Thorpe's Victorian downtown, and whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River round out rainy-day and rest-day plans. Anglers can fish stocked trout streams throughout Lehigh and Carbon counties.

The private campgrounds around Hokendauqua run a standard Northeast season. Most facilities in the region operate seasonally, typically opening from April through October or early November, while a handful of state park campgrounds elsewhere in Pennsylvania stay open year-round. Shoulder-season trips in April and late October mean cooler nights and quieter loops, but some amenities such as pools may not be open yet or may already be closed for the year.
Summer is peak. School-vacation weekends, the July 4th holiday, and Labor Day fill fast at family parks like Allentown KOA Journey and Quaker Woods Campground. Weekday arrivals are noticeably easier to book than Friday-to-Sunday stays.
Fall is the sweet spot for many RV renters. October is peak foliage season in Pennsylvania's mountains, and campgrounds in the Poconos and Laurel Highlands fill up for every October weekend. Winter camping options are limited in the immediate area, so cold-weather travelers should confirm dates and hookups before booking.

Great weekend getaway!
Kami A. - Nov 2024
Great vehicle and friendly owners. This compact camper has a lot of creature comforts while allowing one to maneuver and park in regular parking lots. The van is really easy to drive and handles really nice. The beds were comfortable and IMO accommodate 2 adults (top bed) and 1 adult or 2 kids in the lower bed. We were able to use the bike rack, too, and that worked great for a road bike and mountain bike (I think 2 mountain bikes might not fit unless the handle bars were turned on 1 of them). We didn't use the, generator, heater, hot water, shower, sink, microwave or toilet so I can't comment on them but I wish we rented it longer so we could've taken advantage of all this van has to offer. We would absolutely rent again.

How to book campgrounds near Hokendauqua
Private parks in this corridor, including Moyers Lake and Campground, Evergreen Lake Campground, Allentown KOA Journey, Don Laine Campground, and Quaker Woods Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA reservations are handled through the KOA site or app; at Allentown KOA Journey, RV and tent site check-in is 2:00 pm with checkout at noon, and cabin check-in is 3:00 pm with checkout at 11:00 am. Book summer weekends and any holiday weekend well in advance.
For nearby state parks such as Hickory Run, Beltzville, and Jacobsburg, use the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, opening at noon Eastern Time, so a campsite for July 15 opens on August 15 of the previous year. A two-night minimum applies to weekend reservations in summer, and the maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of wooded family campgrounds and open-field RV parks rather than remote wilderness. Roads are paved and RV-friendly, and grocery, propane, dump stations, and RV service are easy to find in the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton corridor. Cell coverage is generally strong close to Hokendauqua and weaker as sites move toward the ridges north of the valley.
Site types vary. Most established private campgrounds offer full hookups with electric, water, and sewer, while state parks typically have more limited amenities. Some sites at Allentown KOA Journey are water and electric only with no sewer, so travelers who need sewer should filter for full-hookup sites at booking.
Summer thunderstorms are common in the afternoon, biting insects pick up from late spring through summer, and quiet hours are enforced at most family parks. Alcohol policies vary by operator, so check the campground rules when booking.
