Camping near Leesport, Pennsylvania
Leesport is a small borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, sitting along the Schuylkill River just north of Reading. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring Pennsylvania Dutch Country, the Blue Mountain ridge, and the Appalachian Trail corridor to the north.
Campground options within a short drive range from full-hookup family resorts to wooded, rustic sites. Closest to town, Sacony Park Campgrounds and Blue Rocks Family Campground sit near Kutztown and Lenhartsville, while Mountain Springs Camping Rsrt, Appalachian RV Campground, and Pennsylvania Dutch Campsite spread across the surrounding Berks and Schuylkill county farmland. Blue Rocks Family Campground occupies over 100 acres of forested land divided by mountain streams, with the distinctive boulder field on-site that gives the campground its name.
Day-use recreation clusters at Blue Marsh Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project northwest of Reading built around a 1,150-acre lake. Overnight camping is not offered at Blue Marsh itself, so RV travelers stay at the private campgrounds listed above and use the lake for boating, swimming, and trails.
Things to do around Leesport
Water recreation anchors most trips. Blue Marsh Lake supports boating, water-skiing, swimming, and fishing, with three boat launches and a swim beach at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area. A multi-use trail system of roughly 36 miles rings the lake and is open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
Hikers can pick up the Appalachian Trail on Blue Mountain just north of Leesport, with popular overlook hikes to the Pinnacle and Pulpit Rock. The Blue Rocks boulder field, a glacial talus formation on the grounds of Blue Rocks Family Campground, sits very near the Pinnacle, the highest lookout point on the AT in Pennsylvania.
Off-site, families visit the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Reading, the Berks County Heritage Center, and Pennsylvania Dutch country stops toward Kutztown and Lancaster.

37° / 23°F 75 mmCold with snow; most private campgrounds closed.
The regional camping season is short and clearly defined. Most private campgrounds in the area operate seasonally from April through October, with only a few remaining open year-round. Sacony Park Campgrounds, Blue Rocks Family Campground, Mountain Springs Camping Rsrt, Appalachian RV Campground, and Pennsylvania Dutch Campsite generally follow this pattern, so shoulder-season trips in late March or early November require calling ahead to confirm the park is open and that water lines are still on.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm, humid weather and the highest booking pressure at family resorts, especially over Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends. Spring can be wet, and afternoon thunderstorms are common through the warm months, so bring gear that handles rain and soft ground.
Fall brings cooler nights, changing foliage across the ridges, and easier reservations. Winter camping is limited: most private parks close, and Blue Marsh Lake operates as a day-use facility only, with camping and fires prohibited on the project.

How to book campgrounds near Leesport
Private campgrounds near Leesport, including Sacony Park Campgrounds, Blue Rocks Family Campground, Mountain Springs Camping Rsrt, Appalachian RV Campground, and Pennsylvania Dutch Campsite, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends and full-hookup pull-through sites often book out months ahead, so lock in dates as soon as the trip is planned.
Blue Marsh Lake itself does not offer overnight camping. Group picnic shelters at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area, including Lakeview, Hillside, and Vista, are reservable in advance through the Blue Marsh Lake Project Office, and general day-use access is open during posted hours.
For state-park camping, the nearest option with hookups is French Creek State Park, roughly 20 miles from the Blue Marsh area, which takes reservations through the Pennsylvania state parks reservation system.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Leesport is rolling farmland cut by the Schuylkill River, with the wooded ridge of Blue Mountain rising to the north. Most private campgrounds sit on partially wooded, gently sloped land with a mix of gravel and grass pads; some Blue Rocks sites climb the hillside and can be tight or steep, so confirm site dimensions when booking a larger rig. Expect a mix of 30-amp and 50-amp sites at the larger resorts, along with dump stations, laundry, and pools.
Cell service is generally reliable on the valley floor and along US-222 and I-78 but can weaken in the wooded coves close to Blue Mountain. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent and check for ticks after hikes.
Stores, fuel, propane, and groceries are easy to find in Leesport, Hamburg, and Reading, all within a short drive.
