Campgrounds near Marion, Pennsylvania
Marion sits in Franklin County in south-central Pennsylvania, along the US 11 corridor between Chambersburg and Greencastle. The community is a practical base for RV travellers exploring the South Mountain region, with Gettysburg, the Michaux State Forest, and the Maryland line all within a short drive.
Camping options within roughly a half-hour of Marion range from full-hookup private parks to state-park loops. Twin Bridge Meadow Family Campground and Saunderosa Park Inc offer family-oriented private sites, while Chinquapin Hill at Caledonia State Park and Area B at Cowans Gap State Park provide public campsites inside forested state parks. The Hagerstown / Antietam Battlefield KOA Holiday sits just across the state line in Maryland and is a common choice for RVers touring the region's Civil War sites.
Most visitors use Marion as a hub for day trips to Gettysburg National Military Park, Antietam National Battlefield, and the Appalachian Trail, all reachable within about an hour.
Things to do around Marion
Caledonia State Park anchors the outdoor scene to the east. The 1,125-acre park has a swimming pool with a water slide, an 18-hole public golf course, miles of trails, and an Appalachian Trail crossing. Streams inside the park are stocked with trout.
Cowans Gap State Park, to the northwest in Allens Valley, centres on a 42-acre lake with a swimming beach, boat rentals, and trails that connect into the surrounding Buchanan State Forest. Only electric motors are permitted on the lake, and rowboats and paddle boats can be rented from the day-use concession.
History-focused day trips include Gettysburg National Military Park to the east and Antietam National Battlefield to the south. Families staying at the Hagerstown / Antietam Battlefield KOA Holiday can reach Antietam in minutes.

The public state-park camping calendar drives most trip planning. At Caledonia State Park, the camping season opens the day before Pennsylvania trout season and closes at the end of deer season in December, giving a long window that stretches from early April into mid-December. Cowans Gap State Park's camping areas and cabins open in early April, with Area B, part of Area A, and the organized group tenting area closing in mid-October, while the remaining sites and cabins stay open later into the fall.
July and August are the busiest months. Summer weekends at Chinquapin Hill fill quickly, and Cowans Gap's lakefront and beach draw heavy weekend traffic. Booking well in advance is essential for holiday weekends.
Spring and fall offer cooler weather, thinner crowds, and strong fishing. Winter camping is limited: private parks near Marion often close or reduce services, and most state-park loops shut down for the coldest months. Snow and freezing temperatures are common from December through February.

How to book a campsite near Marion
Pennsylvania state-park sites at Caledonia and Cowans Gap are reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757). Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance and are available the same day, though certain site types require booking at least three days ahead of arrival.
Private parks such as Twin Bridge Meadow Family Campground, Saunderosa Park Inc, and the Hagerstown / Antietam Battlefield KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA members can also book through the KOA app and platform.
For summer weekends and holidays, plan to book several months out. Cancellations do free up sites, so checking again close to travel dates can turn up last-minute openings.
What to expect on the ground
At Caledonia State Park, Chinquapin Hill Campground sits on the side of South Mountain among shade trees near the swimming pool and amphitheatre, with non-electric, electric, and 18 full-hookup sites. Sites can sit close together with limited screening, and some pitches are sloped, which matters for RV levelling. Pets are not permitted at Chinquapin Hill, but are allowed at the nearby Hosack Run campground.
Cowans Gap has 201 campsites across two areas, accommodating everything from small tents to large motor homes. Both parks offer modern restrooms, warm showers, and sanitary dump stations. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania state parks, so download park maps before arriving.
Alcohol is prohibited in most Pennsylvania state park areas, including standard campsites. Quiet hours run 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Travel trailers and pop-ups sit at the low end, while Class C motorhomes and fifth wheels run higher. Because Marion sits just off Interstate 81 between Chambersburg and Greencastle, you'll find a healthy mix of rigs at competitive prices. Pro tip: filtering by Instant Book often surfaces hosts who price competitively to stay busy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marion,%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Marion, PA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Marion. Pennsylvania does not require a commercial driver's license or any special endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, regardless of size. To book on RVezy, approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised by how simple this part is, leaving you free to focus on planning the fun stuff like Gettysburg battlefield tours or a Caledonia State Park hike.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road around Marion with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), so you can match it to your comfort. If you get a flat on Interstate 81 or need a jump at Caledonia State Park, one phone call gets help dispatched any hour, day or night. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully at booking, especially if it's your first time renting an RV.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Marion, PA RV rental?
Booking is lower-risk than you might think. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and there's a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that, what you're eligible for depends on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start. Because policies aren't host-specific, you don't have to compare fine print between listings. If a host cancels on you, RVezy provides a refund or travel credit so your plans aren't left in limbo. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Marion rigs for peak Gettysburg events, knowing the grace period gives you breathing room to confirm your plans.

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Marion is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers from local hosts who welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Many hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which you'll see clearly before booking. Once you're on the road, your pup has great options nearby: Caledonia State Park allows leashed pets on most trails, and the Appalachian Trail crossing at Pine Grove Furnace is a fantastic leg-stretcher. Pro tip: message the host through the listing before booking to confirm any size or breed details, then plan a stop at a Chambersburg dog park about 15 minutes north for a good run.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/CaledoniaStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Marion?

Popular delivery destinations include Caledonia State Park, Gettysburg Campground, and Granite Hill Camping Resort, all within 30 to 45 minutes of Marion. Delivery fees usually depend on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message a couple of hosts with your campsite address to compare quotes and book the one that fits your budget.

dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Marion, PA in an RV?
Late April through mid-October is the sweet spot for a Marion, PA RV trip, and each season has its own charm. Spring brings 55 to 70 degree days and blooming dogwoods at Caledonia State Park. Summers run warm and humid, with highs in the mid-80s and great swimming weather at Cowans Gap Lake. Fall is hands-down the local favorite: September and October deliver crisp 60-degree days, fiery foliage along Route 30, and smaller crowds. Winters dip to the 20s and 30s with occasional snow, but several hardy hosts rent year-round for Gettysburg's quieter off-season. Pro tip: aim for the second week of October to catch peak foliage in the South Mountain area.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never rented an RV before. How does the pickup work?
First time renting an RV? You're in good hands. Every Marion host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water and waste systems, propane, and driving tips for your specific rig. Most walkthroughs run 30 to 60 minutes, and hosts are happy to answer texts during your trip if questions come up. If you're nervous about towing or driving a Class C, ask about delivery, which removes the highway-driving part entirely. Pro tip: arrive at pickup with a notebook (or record video on your phone) so you can review hookup steps later at Caledonia or Cowans Gap. Most first-timers feel confident within the first evening.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
Don't worry, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on I-81, a dead battery in a Gettysburg parking lot, or a propane issue at Caledonia State Park, help is one phone call away any time of day or night. For non-emergency issues like a finicky awning or a confusing control panel, your host is usually a quick text away and can troubleshoot remotely. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before leaving Marion, and snap a photo of your rig's VIN plate just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Marion, PA RV rental to other states or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed on most Marion rentals, which makes sense given how central this part of Pennsylvania is. From Marion you can easily reach Maryland (10 minutes south on I-81), West Virginia (45 minutes), Virginia, DC, New York, and New Jersey within a single day's drive. Many hosts also allow trips into Canada, but you'll want to confirm cross-border permission directly with the host before booking since insurance paperwork is required. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a classic week-long loop from Marion hits Gettysburg, Harpers Ferry, Shenandoah National Park, and back, all under 300 total miles.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat's the realistic fuel budget for an RV trip from Marion?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's manageable with a little planning. Most Class C motorhomes around Marion get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG when towing), and campervans can hit 16 to 20 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices have been hovering around $3.30 to $3.70 per gallon, slightly higher than neighboring West Virginia and Maryland (worth a fill-up just over the state line). For a 300-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: the Sheetz on Route 11 in Greencastle is a popular local fill-up spot with diesel and easy RV access.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I reserve a campground near Marion?
For Pennsylvania state parks like Caledonia and Cowans Gap, book as soon as you can: reservations open 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania state parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends fill within days. Private campgrounds like Granite Hill or Gettysburg Campground typically take reservations 6 to 12 months out and are essential to lock down for Memorial Day, July 4th, and the Gettysburg reenactment weekends in late June and early July. Midweek and shoulder-season trips are far more forgiving, often bookable a week or two ahead. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, search Tuesday-to-Thursday windows on the Pennsylvania DCNR site for last-minute openings even in summer.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhat are the driving conditions like around Marion, PA?
Driving an RV around Marion is refreshingly straightforward. Interstate 81 runs right past town with wide lanes and gentle grades, and Route 11 and Route 16 are flat, easy local routes. The main thing to watch is the South Mountain area east toward Caledonia, where Route 30 has a few longer climbs and descents (use lower gears on the way down). In winter, occasional snow and ice can hit between December and February, so check PennDOT's 511PA traveler info before heading out. Summer afternoons can bring quick thunderstorms. Pro tip: avoid I-81 northbound on Friday afternoons when DC-area weekenders pour into the corridor, and aim for a morning departure instead.
511pa.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Marion typically offer?
You'll find a great mix of options. Most private RV parks near Marion (Granite Hill, Drummer Boy, Gettysburg Campground) offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, laundry, and camp stores. State parks like Caledonia and Pine Grove Furnace offer electric-only sites with shared water spigots and a central dump station, plus hot showers and flush toilets. For dumping and fresh water on the road, Caledonia State Park has a public dump station, and most Sheetz and Flying J locations along I-81 offer fuel and water access. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving Caledonia, since the next reliable fill-up heading west toward Cowans Gap is at the park itself.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/CaledoniaStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhat's actually inside a typical Marion RV rental?
More than you'd expect. Most motorhome rentals in Marion come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a propane grill. Campervan rental in Marion tends to be more compact but still includes a bed, kitchenette, and often a portable toilet. Generators are common on Class C rigs for off-grid power, and some hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots as an option. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities checklist and message the host if you need something specific like a coffee maker or kids' booster seats.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Marion?
Hosts in Marion offer a flexible menu of add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include linen and kitchen kits, generator use, propane refills, bike racks, kayaks, outdoor mats, fire pits, and Wi-Fi hotspots, each with prices listed clearly on the booking page. Pickup is usually at the host's home or storage lot near Marion, Greencastle, or Chambersburg, and dropoff is at the same location unless you arrange one-way delivery (message the host through the listing to ask). Mileage policies vary by host: some offer unlimited, others 100 to 150 miles per day with a small overage fee. Pro tip: bundle add-ons upfront, it's almost always cheaper than buying gear last-minute at the campground store.
visitpa.com/things-to-do/outdoor-adventures/camping-and-rvingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple, secure, and handled entirely through RVezy, so there's no awkward cash exchange at pickup. You pay with a credit or debit card when you book, and the funds are held safely until your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is placed on your card separately before pickup, with the amount set by the host based on the RV's class and value. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition it left, the deposit is released after your trip. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround video with the host at pickup AND dropoff in Marion, this documents the rig's condition and makes deposit returns smooth and fast.
