Campgrounds near Mayfield, Pennsylvania
Mayfield is a small borough in Lackawanna County, roughly 14 miles northeast of Scranton and adjacent to Carbondale in the northern anthracite region. Its position near the intersection of Interstate 81, Interstate 84, and U.S. Route 6 makes it a practical staging point for RV travelers exploring northeastern Pennsylvania and the western Poconos.
Camping options within a short drive cover both public and private ground. Lackawanna State Park sits ten miles north of Scranton and centers on the 198-acre Lackawanna Lake, with campground loops, cottages, and yurts inside a 1,445-acre park managed by DCNR. Private resorts add fuller hookups and family programming, including Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort on a 90-acre spring-fed lake in nearby Waymart, plus Valley View Farm and Campground, Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Inc., and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park.
The surrounding landscape is forested and hilly, with lakes, trout streams, and rail-trail corridors within easy driving range. Cell service can be spotty inside parks, so downloading maps ahead of arrival is worth doing.
Things to do near Mayfield
Water recreation drives most trip plans in this area. At Lackawanna State Park, boating, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming are the core activities, and the 198-acre lake is surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort adds lake and pool swimming, rowboat, kayak, and paddleboard rentals, plus a pet beach and an organized activity calendar aimed at families.
On land, hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers share about 15 miles of multi-use trails at Lackawanna State Park, with an additional three miles of hiking-only paths. Scranton is a short drive south for rainy-day options. Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Inc. and Valley View Farm and Campground give quieter bases for exploring the surrounding countryside.

Public camping around Mayfield runs on a spring-to-fall calendar. At Lackawanna State Park, the campground opens the second Friday in April and closes the third Sunday in October. The park itself is open year round from sunrise to sunset for day use, but overnight facilities, the pool, and the group tenting areas run on shorter seasons.
Summer weekends and holidays fill first at both the state park and private resorts, so booking early is important for July and August. Late spring and early fall bring cooler nights, lighter crowds, and good conditions for hiking and fishing, and Keen Lake continues weekend events into the late season with autumn foliage in the surrounding Pocono hills.
Winter is cold and snowy, with regular snowfall from November into April. Most private RV parks in the area close for the season, and the Lackawanna State Park campground is closed, though the day-use park remains open for activities such as ice fishing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
How to book campgrounds near Mayfield
Lackawanna State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made three days ahead of arrival and can be booked up to eleven months in advance, and visitors can also call 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757) from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The maximum camping period is 14 consecutive days in the summer season and 21 consecutive days in the off-season.
A phased shower house renovation is underway at the Lackawanna State Park campground, with impacted sites blocked in the reservation system while other loops stay open. Private campgrounds such as Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort, Valley View Farm and Campground, and Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Inc. book directly through their own websites or by phone, with peak summer weekends filling well in advance.
What to expect
Sites in this area range from wooded, electric-only state park loops to full-hookup private resort sites. At Lackawanna State Park, the campground includes forested full-hookup, electric, non-electric, and walk-to tent sites, plus three camping cottages and two yurts in the Carpenter Town loop. A sanitary dump station sits near the campground entrance, and shower houses provide warm showers and flush toilets.
Pets are only permitted at designated sites in the Fox Run and Maple Lane loops at Lackawanna, and quiet hours run 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. Bringing firewood into Pennsylvania is prohibited due to spotted lanternfly restrictions, so plan to buy local firewood and burn it before leaving. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in Pennsylvania state parks.

eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Mayfield?
Earlier is better, but you have flexibility. Pennsylvania state parks like Lackawanna and Promised Land open reservations 11 months in advance through the PA State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends and fall foliage dates (late September through mid-October) often fill within the first weeks they open. Private campgrounds like Keen Lake Resort and KOA Wilkes-Barre/Scranton typically book 2 to 4 months ahead for peak season, but midweek and shoulder-season sites are usually available with just a week or two of notice. Pro tip: if your dream weekend at Lackawanna State Park is taken, check back on Sunday evenings, cancellations often free up sites you can grab in real time.
pa.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Mayfield?
Driving an RV around Mayfield is very manageable, this is small-town PA, not Manhattan. I-81 runs just minutes away and is your main artery for trips north to Binghamton or south to Scranton. Route 6, the historic highway through northeastern PA, is scenic but has some winding stretches and steep grades through the Moosic Mountains, so take it easy in larger motorhomes. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Lackawanna County has a high deer population), and be aware that winter brings snow and lake-effect flurries from November through March. Pro tip: avoid the narrow streets in downtown Carbondale with anything over 25 feet, stick to Main Street in Mayfield and the wider state routes for an easy drive.

Most campgrounds near Mayfield offer solid amenities, though hookup levels vary. Lackawanna State Park has electric (20/30/50 amp) sites with a central dump station and potable water fill-up, plus modern restrooms and showers. Promised Land State Park is more rustic with electric-only and some non-electric sites. All four have dump stations and freshwater fill points included with your reservation. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before you leave the host's location if you're heading to a non-hookup site, water spigots at state parks sometimes have a wait during peak weekends.

Expect a real bed (or two), a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower (in Class B, C, and A motorhomes and most trailers), heating and air conditioning, and dining/living space that converts to extra sleeping. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and a generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi is rare onboard but easy with a phone hotspot. Seatbelts are provided for all riding passengers, and the listing page shows exactly how many. Pro tip: each Mayfield listing has a detailed amenities list and photos, check for outdoor add-ons like camp chairs, a grill, or bikes, which many local hosts throw in free.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Mayfield RV rental?
Hosts in Mayfield offer plenty of ways to customize your motorhome rental. Common add-ons include linens and bedding packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and utensils ($25 to $50), outdoor gear like camp chairs, awning lights, and grills, bike racks, generators (often included free), and sometimes kayaks or paddleboards for Lackawanna Lake. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, with fees typically based on mileage. Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host"s location in or near Mayfield, with set time windows. Mileage policies vary by host, with 100 to 150 miles per day being typical. Pro tip: bundle linens, a kitchen kit, and delivery to skip packing entirely, perfect for a fly-in family RV trip in Mayfield.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mayfield%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Mayfield RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card during booking, never directly to the host in cash. Your rental total covers the nightly rate, the RVezy service fee, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons or delivery you select. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is placed as a hold on your card separately from the booking payment and released after a successful return. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup, take date-stamped photos and videos inside and out, and return the RV with the same fuel level and clean condition. Pro tip: keep gas and dump-station receipts from your Mayfield trip in case any questions come up later.
