Campgrounds near McSherrystown
McSherrystown sits in Adams County, Pennsylvania, a short drive from Hanover and Gettysburg. The location puts RV travelers within easy reach of both Civil War history and rolling farm-country recreation, with a mix of state park camping and private RV resorts inside a fifteen to twenty mile radius.
The closest public option is Codorus State Park, which surrounds Lake Marburg in southern York County. Private options include Gettysburg Farm RV Campground west of town, Campground Island, Drummer Boy Camping Resort just minutes from downtown Gettysburg, and Cedar Lake Resort. Together they cover full-hookup RV sites, cabins, cottages, and tent-friendly loops.
Most travelers use McSherrystown as a base for the Gettysburg National Military Park, the Eisenhower National Historic Site, and lake-based recreation at Lake Marburg. Downtown Hanover and the region's snack-food factories are also close, which makes the area a practical stop for families combining sightseeing with outdoor time.
Things to do near McSherrystown
The main regional draw is Gettysburg National Military Park, with self-guided auto tours, licensed battlefield guides, and the museum and visitor center. Drummer Boy Camping Resort sits close to the battlefield and is a common base for battlefield tours and downtown ghost walks.
Water-based activities center on Lake Marburg inside Codorus State Park. The 1,275-acre lake has 26 miles of shoreline and supports boating, warmwater fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, along with a swimming pool, disc golf, hiking trails, and picnic pavilions. Swimming is not permitted in the lake itself, but the park operates a seasonal public pool.
Families also use Gettysburg Farm RV Campground for farm-animal interaction, and private resorts like Drummer Boy add pools, mini golf, arcades, and golf-cart rentals for younger travelers.

The Codorus State Park campground operates on a defined season, roughly the second Friday in April through November 1. Outside that window, the park itself remains open sunrise to sunset, but overnight camping at the state park is not available. Private parks in the Gettysburg area, including Drummer Boy Camping Resort, typically run a spring-through-fall season with pool and waterslide amenities offered only in warm months.
Summer is peak demand. July weekends around Independence Day and the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg see sites fill months ahead, and Codorus State Park enforces a 14-night maximum consecutive stay between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Spring and fall offer cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and good conditions for battlefield touring and hiking. October is popular for Halloween-themed events at private resorts, so weekend inventory tightens. Winter is quiet, with most RV parks closed or on limited operations.

Robert was extremely helpful, kind, knowledgeable, and patient with us. He was always available to help on the way and responded as soon he saw or heard. As first time RV renters, he gave us the best possible experience we could of had. We highly recommend.

I recommend this RV, driving this rig was simple and comfortable. The layout and design of the interior space was perfect and roomy. The dining set makes into a very nice long bed. I will rent this one again.

This RV was as advertised. It was setup at our campsite when we arrived at Camp Swatara. I would say Daniel is a great host.

How to book
Codorus State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Sites can be booked online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reservations open up to 11 months in advance and must be made at least three days ahead of arrival. Glamping at Codorus is handled separately through Timberline Glamping.
Private campgrounds book directly. Drummer Boy Camping Resort, part of the Thousand Trails network, takes reservations through its own site or by phone, and offers over 400 seasonal and short-term sites plus cabins, cottages, and lofts across roughly 95 wooded acres. Gettysburg Farm RV Campground, Campground Island, and Cedar Lake Resort also handle bookings directly.
For summer weekends, reserve as far ahead as possible. Cancellations do occur, so last-minute checks can pay off.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the area range from full-hookup pull-throughs at private resorts to wooded, mixed-use loops at Codorus State Park. Codorus offers a range of options from basic tent sites to full-hookup sites for RVs, with showers, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station on site. Site spacing varies, and open-field sites feel hotter in midsummer than interior wooded sites.
Private resorts near Gettysburg trend toward family-focused amenities: pools, waterslides, arcades, mini golf, playgrounds, and organized activities. Seasonal campers occupy a large share of sites at Drummer Boy Camping Resort, which can make the property feel busy on summer weekends.
Cell service is unpredictable in and around Pennsylvania state parks, so downloading maps in advance is recommended. Only designated areas at Codorus are pet-friendly, and pet reservations must be selected at booking.
