Camping near Middletown, Pennsylvania
Middletown sits along the Susquehanna River in Dauphin County, roughly ten minutes from downtown Harrisburg and about fifteen minutes from Hershey. The location puts RV travelers within easy reach of Hersheypark, Lancaster County's Amish farmland, and Gettysburg, with I-83, I-283, PA 283, and US 322 all converging nearby.
RV options cluster in two directions. Harrisburg East Campground sits just east of the city off PA 283 and operates year round, with full-hookup sites suited to bigger rigs. Hersheypark Camping Resort, a year-round facility that has welcomed guests since 1963, offers more than 300 open and shaded sites, including cabins, tiny homes, full hook-up sites, partial sites with electric, water and cable, and no hook-up tent sites. South and east toward Lancaster County, Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday, Hershey Road Campground, and Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground round out the choices for families splitting time between the theme park and Amish Country.
Most sites in the area are private commercial parks rather than state or federal campgrounds, so reservations are handled directly with each property rather than through Recreation.gov.
Things to do near Middletown
Hersheypark is the anchor attraction, paired with Hershey's Chocolate World, ZooAmerica, Hershey Gardens, and the Giant Center for concerts and hockey. Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday runs a free summer Hersheypark shuttle, and Hersheypark Camping Resort offers its own on-site shuttle to the park gate.
Beyond Hershey, day trips are short. Lancaster's Amish Country, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, and Gettysburg National Military Park all sit inside an hour's drive. Downtown Harrisburg offers the State Capitol, the Farm Show Complex, and riverfront trails along the Susquehanna.
Closer in, Middletown itself is the boarding point for the Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad, which runs an 11-mile round-trip excursion along the Swatara Creek and Union Canal from an 1891 freight station, and nearby state game lands and rail-trails give families flat, easy options for biking and walking between park visits.

The core RV season runs from mid-April through late October. Seasonal parks in the area follow that pattern closely: the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday is open April 17 to Nov. 1, timed to align with Hersheypark's operating calendar and the annual Hershey RV Show in September.
Summer is peak. Hersheypark runs its daily season roughly from late May through Labor Day, and campgrounds near the park fill weeks ahead for weekends, the July 4 holiday, and the Hershey RV Show week in mid-September. Book early if the trip is tied to a specific park date. Fall brings cooler nights, Halloween events at Hersheypark, and lighter midweek availability.
Winter camping is limited. Harrisburg East Campground and Hersheypark Camping Resort stay open year round, but once temperatures drop below 30°F over the course of three days, water is shut off immediately through April 1, with the Historic Landis Barn bathhouse and the 2-Bedroom Deluxe Cabins retaining water year round, so full-hookup RV use is effectively seasonal even at year-round sites.

How to book an RV site
Reservations for the Middletown area are made directly with each private campground rather than through a federal system. Hersheypark Camping Resort books through its own website and pairs cleanly with park ticket packages. Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday suggests reservations especially during summer months, accepts walk-ins as sites are available, and provides a night registration desk for after office hours.
Harrisburg East Campground handles bookings directly by phone or through its own site and is a practical choice for one-night stops given its quick access to PA 283 and I-83. For summer weekends, Hersheypark event dates, and the mid-September Hershey RV Show, plan to book six to eight weeks out. Confirm rig length limits when reserving, since some standard seasonal sites are capped for larger motorhomes and fifth wheels.
What to expect on arrival
Most parks in the area are full-service commercial campgrounds with 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, dump stations, laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi. Harrisburg East Campground offers mostly level pull-through sites and a seasonal outdoor pool. Hersheypark Camping Resort provides more than 300 open and shaded sites, including 50 cabins with heat and air conditioning, two tiny homes, full hook-up sites, partial sites, and no hook-up tent sites.
Expect some highway background noise at parks close to PA 283 and US 322, and expect Hershey-area campgrounds to be busy and family-oriented in summer, with kids' activities, pools, and shuttle buses running. Check-out at the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA is by 11:30 a.m. and requires guests to leave the campsite and property. Pets are permitted at Hersheypark Camping Resort but are not allowed in any buildings or inside tents.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Middletown, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Middletown, PA?
Good news: RV rental in Middletown, PA is one of the most affordable ways to explore Hershey, Lancaster, and Gettysburg country. On RVezy, towable trailers average around $120 per night, while motorhomes typically run about $200 per night, with most hosts offering 10 to 20 percent off for weekly or monthly bookings. You can dial in your budget using the price filter, and many cheap RV rental Middletown options pop up midweek and in shoulder season. Pro tip: book a Sunday-through-Thursday stay in late April or early October and you'll often score lower nightly rates while still catching beautiful weather across the Susquehanna Valley.
visitpa.com/region/dutch-country-roadsDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Middletown, PA?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Middletown, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers commonly listed on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. With that sorted, you're free to drive anything from a cozy campervan to a Class C headed for Hersheypark.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Middletown?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RVezy reservation in Middletown includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on Route 322 toward Hershey or I-83 toward Gettysburg with real peace of mind. Protection plans help cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully before confirming, especially if you're planning a longer Pennsylvania Dutch Country loop with lots of miles.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Middletown RV rental?
You can book with confidence. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and there is a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. After that, refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. The same policy applies across the platform, so you won't see different cancellation rules on each listing. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will help with a refund or rebooking credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in your Hersheypark or Gettysburg dates, then use the grace period to firm up plans without stress.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Middletown RV trip?
Absolutely, dogs are welcome on plenty of trips. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Middletown that fits your crew, and message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size or breed notes. Once you're rolling, Gifford Pinchot State Park (about 20 miles southwest) allows leashed pets at designated campsites, Hersheypark Camping Resort offers pet-friendly sites, and Hoffer Park in Middletown is a fun leashed-dog stop. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, it gets humid here in July.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/GiffordPinchotStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Middletown?
Yes, and it's a game changer for first-time renters. Many hosts offer RV delivery in Middletown and the surrounding Harrisburg area, meaning they'll drop the motorhome or travel trailer right at Hersheypark Camping Resort, Harrisburg East Campground, Gifford Pinchot State Park, or even your own driveway, then level it, hook up utilities, and walk you through every system. Just toggle the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination to see hosts who serve your spot and their delivery fees. Pro tip: delivery is perfect if you're flying into Harrisburg International Airport (MDT), just a few miles from Middletown, so you can skip towing entirely.
flyhia.com/How far can I drive on a Middletown RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got plenty of range to explore. Each host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy, with included miles per night clearly listed on every Middletown listing, and some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for bigger loops. To give you a sense of distances from Middletown: Hersheypark is about 10 miles, Lancaster Amish Country roughly 30 miles, Gettysburg National Military Park around 50 miles, Philadelphia about 100 miles, and Washington, D.C. around 130 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a Middletown RV trip that includes the Pocono Mountains or Niagara Falls, filter for unlimited mileage listings to keep your fuel-plus-mileage math simple.
nps.gov/gett/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Middletown, PA?
You'll find a mix of state parks and family resorts within easy reach. Top picks for RV camping Middletown include Hersheypark Camping Resort (about 8 miles, full hookups and shuttle access to the park), Harrisburg East Campground (around 5 miles, super convenient for first-timers), Gifford Pinchot State Park Campground (about 20 miles with 339 sites around a lake), Elizabethtown/Hershey KOA (about 12 miles, family-friendly with a pool), and Thousand Trails Hershey for resort-style amenities. All offer RV-friendly sites with electric and water. Pro tip: Pennsylvania state parks like Gifford Pinchot release reservations on a rolling 11-month window, so book early for summer weekends.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Middletown?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot. May and June bring lush green countryside and average highs in the 70s to low 80s, July and August are warm and humid with highs in the mid-80s (peak Hersheypark season), and September through late October is the local favorite, with crisp 60 to 75 degree days and brilliant fall foliage across the Susquehanna Valley. Winters are cold with average January highs in the upper 30s and occasional snow, so most campgrounds run April through October. Pro tip: aim for the last two weeks of October to catch peak leaf color along the Swatara Creek and on drives toward Lancaster County.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I get help figuring it out?
You'll be set up for success from day one. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water and waste tanks, propane, awning, and driving tips specific to that rig. You can also message hosts before booking with any first time renting an RV questions, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. For Middletown trips, hosts often recommend starting with a flat, easy route like Route 230 toward Elizabethtown before tackling I-83 hills. Pro tip: ask your host to record a quick walkthrough video on your phone so you can rewatch it at the campground.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat if something goes wrong on the road near Middletown?
Help is one phone call away, 24/7. Every RVezy booking includes round-the-clock roadside assistance with the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and towing. Middletown sits at the crossroads of I-83, I-283, and Route 322, so service trucks reach most local breakdown spots quickly, and major repair facilities are clustered in nearby Harrisburg. Your host is also a direct message away for quick questions about the RV's quirks. Pro tip: snap a photo of your campsite address and the nearest mile marker when you arrive, it'll save time if you ever need to call in roadside support along Pennsylvania's rural backroads.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Middletown RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, road-tripping across state lines is one of the best perks of renting an RV in Middletown. Most hosts welcome interstate travel through Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware, all within an easy day's drive. Popular RV road trips from Middletown include Washington, D.C. (about 130 miles), the Outer Banks of North Carolina (around 400 miles), Niagara Falls (about 330 miles), and the Pocono Mountains (roughly 130 miles). Travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts with advance approval, just message them through the listing first. Important: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy bookings because insurance coverage doesn't extend there.
cbp.gov/travelWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is straightforward once you know the basics. Class C motorhomes around Middletown typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans 14 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually 10 to 14 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices tend to sit a bit above the national average, so check GasBuddy along your route. For a 200-mile weekend loop to Lancaster and back, expect roughly $60 to $90 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top off at the Pilot or Love's near I-81 in Harrisburg before heading into Amish Country, where rural stations can charge a premium.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Middletown?
The earlier the better, especially for summer. Pennsylvania state parks like Gifford Pinchot and Codorus open reservations on a rolling 11-month window through the DCNR reservation system, and prime weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day) often fill within days. Private parks like Hersheypark Camping Resort and Elizabethtown/Hershey KOA book up 2 to 4 months out for peak summer, while shoulder-season sites are often available a few weeks ahead. Pro tip: if your Middletown RV trip falls during a Hershey concert weekend or AACA Fall Meet in Hershey (early October), reserve the moment your dates are confirmed, this town fills up fast.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Middletown?
Driving here is very RV-friendly once you know the routes. Middletown sits along flat river-valley terrain with easy access to I-283, I-83, I-81, and Route 322, all wide, well-maintained highways. The biggest things to watch are: low clearances on a few older downtown bridges (stick to numbered highways with your RV), rolling hills heading north toward the Poconos, and quick-moving summer thunderstorms that can reduce visibility. Pennsylvania winters bring snow and ice from December through February, so most renters stick to April-October trips. Pro tip: check 511PA.com before you roll out, it gives real-time traffic, construction, and weather alerts statewide and is a lifesaver around Harrisburg rush hour.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Middletown?
You'll be well taken care of. Most campgrounds near Middletown offer 30/50 amp electric, fresh water hookups, sewer or a centralized dump station, free hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi (variable in rural spots), and camp stores. Hersheypark Camping Resort and Elizabethtown/Hershey KOA add pools, playgrounds, and shuttle service, while Gifford Pinchot State Park offers a lake for swimming and boating but more rustic facilities. Public dump stations are also available at the Pennsylvania Turnpike service plazas and several Flying J locations near Harrisburg. Pro tip: fill your freshwater tank before leaving the host or campground entrance, water spigots can be a hike from some back-in sites.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat features and amenities come with a typical Middletown RV rental?
You'll feel right at home. Most motorhome rentals in Middletown on RVezy include a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette or bunks, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with AC and furnace, a TV, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a generator for boondocking, an outdoor awning, camp chairs, and basic kitchenware. Campervan rentals in Middletown offer a more compact layout, perfect for couples. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities tab and message the host to confirm linens, bedding, and a starter kit of toilet paper and dish soap, many hosts include these free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Middletown%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Middletown, PA?
You can fully customize your trip. Common add-ons on Middletown listings include delivery and setup, generator hours, propane refills, linen and kitchen packages, outdoor grills, bike racks, kayak racks, and even pet kits. Hosts set their own pickup and dropoff windows, usually mid-morning to early afternoon, and many will meet you at Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) or your campground for an extra fee. Mileage policies are listed clearly on each RV page. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package on your first family RV trip in Middletown, the all-in convenience is worth every dollar.
flyhia.com/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple, secure, and all done online. When you book an RV rental in Pennsylvania on RVezy, you'll pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before the trip starts, and it's released within a few days of return assuming there's no damage, missing items, or policy violations like smoking. The exact deposit amount shows on each listing before you confirm. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walk-around video at both pickup and dropoff, it's the easiest way to ensure a smooth security deposit return after your Middletown RV adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or boondock an RV in and around Middletown?
You've got more options than you might think. The simplest answer for where to park an RV in Middletown is at one of the developed campgrounds nearby, Harrisburg East, Hersheypark Camping Resort, or Gifford Pinchot State Park, where overnight stays are fully legal and hookups are available. Some Walmart, Cracker Barrel, and Cabela's locations in the Harrisburg area allow free overnight RV parking with manager permission. On-street overnight RV parking is restricted in Middletown borough and most surrounding townships, so plan to be in a campground or approved lot by nightfall. Pro tip: the Pennsylvania Turnpike service plazas also permit short rest stops, handy for breaking up a long travel day.
