Campgrounds near Mount Joy
Mount Joy sits in northern Lancaster County, roughly midway between Harrisburg and Reading in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The area is a practical base for RV travelers: it puts Hersheypark, Lancaster city, Amish farmland, and the Susquehanna River within a short drive, and most private campgrounds cluster within about a fifteen-mile radius of town.
Pinch Pond Family Campground is located in northern Lancaster County, midway between Harrisburg and Reading, just 3 miles from Exit 266 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76). Sites accommodate everything from the smallest tent to the largest RV, and RV sites include water, electric, sewer, and cable TV hookups. PA Dutch Country RV Resort in Manheim is a Thousand Trails property with wooded sites, full hookups, and easy access to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire grounds.
Hershey Road Campground, Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground, and the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday round out the local options. The KOA sits on a 50-acre tree-filled property with a stocked catch-and-release fishing pond, two swimming pools, mini-golf, sand volleyball, basketball, a bike track, and a recreation hall, with pull-through and back-in sites accommodating rigs up to 100 feet.
Things to do near Mount Joy
Hersheypark is the region's headline attraction, with more than a dozen roller coasters, water rides, and ZooAmerica next door. Hershey's Chocolate World offers a free ride tour and factory-style tasting stops. Families with younger kids often pair Hersheypark with Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster.
Amish Country day trips out of Mount Joy typically include buggy rides, farm tours, and stops in Strasburg for the Strasburg Rail Road, a heritage steam train ride through farmland. The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire at Mount Hope Estate in Manheim runs weekends from late summer into fall, with jousting, live stages, and food vendors on a village-style site.
For outdoor time, the Park at Governor Dick in nearby Mount Gretna offers wooded hiking and biking with an observation tower on the summit. Chickies Rock County Park and the Northwest River Trail along the Susquehanna add more hiking and biking without a long drive.

The Mount Joy camping season at most private parks runs from mid-April through late October. The Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday, for example, is scheduled to be open from mid-April to late October, and pools at most local campgrounds open around Memorial Day weekend and close in early September.
Summer is peak. Hersheypark runs full daily schedules from June through August, humidity is high, and popular campgrounds fill weeks in advance for July and holiday weekends. Late summer and early fall bring the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire crowd to Manheim, and campgrounds near the faire grounds book heavily on faire Saturdays. The Hershey RV Show in mid-September is another spike, with sites near Hershey often reserved months out.
Spring and early fall offer cooler temperatures, lighter crowds, and easier reservations, though pools may not be open and some activity programming winds down after Labor Day. Winter camping is limited: most private parks close, and Pennsylvania state park campgrounds in the region shift to reduced or rustic operation.

How to book near Mount Joy
Private campgrounds around Mount Joy take direct reservations through their own websites, by phone, or through booking platforms. The Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday accepts reservations online, by phone, or using the KOA App. Pinch Pond Family Campground and Hershey Road Campground book directly through their own websites. PA Dutch Country RV Resort operates on the Thousand Trails membership model, with member reservations and limited non-member availability through Encore's booking system.
For a state park alternative, most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival through the DCNR reservation system, and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources charges a $6.50 non-refundable transaction fee on all reservations. During the summer season, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, campsites can be reserved for a minimum stay of one night Sunday through Friday, and two nights if reserving a Saturday.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Mount Joy is rolling farmland with wooded pockets, so most private campgrounds sit on gently sloped, partly shaded sites with a mix of grass and gravel pads. Full hookups are common at the larger RV parks, and big-rig access is straightforward from the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) and US 30.
Road noise is worth planning around. Pinch Pond sits close to the turnpike, and reviewers note persistent highway noise day and night with no real sound buffer, plus a nearby shooting range that produces frequent target-practice noise. Sites at the back of the property are quieter but less shaded.
Family amenities are the norm at the local parks: swimming pools, playgrounds, stocked fishing ponds, mini-golf, wagon rides, and camp stores. Cell service is reliable across the area, and grocery, fuel, and dump-station access are all within a short drive of any of the listed campgrounds.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mount Joy. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal motorhomes or trailers used recreationally, so your standard non-commercial license works for everything on RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. No DMV trips, no extra paperwork, just pick up your rig and head toward Hershey or Amish Country.

Booking is low risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy at the platform level, not the host. There is a grace period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and after that, refunds depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. Because the policy is handled by RVezy, you won't see it displayed on individual listings. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your plans stay protected. If life changes, just reach out to RVezy support and they will walk you through your options.

Bring a tie-out, a collapsible bowl, and waste bags, and your pup will love the farmland walks as much as you do.
lancastercountyparks.org/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Mount Joy?
Yes, RV delivery Mount Joy is one of the most popular options, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will drive the rig directly to your campsite at places like Hershey RV & Camping Resort, Old Mill Stream Campground, or Country Acres Campground in Gordonville, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero highway driving on your part if you don't want it. Just use the "Delivery" filter when searching, and check each host's delivery radius and fee (often a flat rate plus mileage). It's the easiest way to turn a campervan rental Mount Joy into a worry-free vacation.

koa.com/campgrounds/hershey/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Mount Joy?

Summer highs run mid-80s with humidity, perfect for campground pools but plan for AC. Winters are cold (20s to 40s) with occasional snow, but several hosts keep winterized rigs available for Hersheypark Christmas Candylane or quiet off-season getaways. Pro tip for locals-in-the-know: book a September trip and catch the Mount Joy Fourth Friday street festival downtown.
weather.gov/ctp/I have never driven an RV before. Is renting in Mount Joy a good idea for first-timers?
Mount Joy is one of the friendliest places in the Northeast for first time renting an RV. The roads around town (Route 230, Route 283, and rural Lancaster County backroads) are flat, wide, and low-traffic compared to a big metro area, which makes the learning curve much gentler. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, holding tanks, and propane, and they are a text away during your trip. If you would rather not drive at all, choose a host who delivers and sets up the rig at your campsite. Start with a short trip to Hershey or Elizabethtown to build confidence on your first RV rental in Mount Joy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180414-Renting-an-RVWhat if something breaks down during my Mount Joy RV trip?

Mount Joy is minutes from Lancaster, Hershey, and Harrisburg, so service centers and parts are never far. Your host is also your first text-message lifeline for quick questions like why the water pump isn't priming, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. You don't need to be a mechanic to rent an RV in Mount Joy, you just need to know who to call.

Yes, interstate travel is standard, and Mount Joy is perfectly placed for a multi-state RV road trip from Mount Joy. Popular routes include the New Jersey shore (2.5 hours east), the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia (5 hours south), Niagara Falls (5 hours north), and the Maine coast (8 hours northeast). Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and their insurance, so message them through the listing before booking if that's your plan. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Domestically, you're free to roam, just confirm the host's mileage policy if you're heading far.
cbp.gov/travelHow much should I budget for fuel on a Mount Joy RV trip?
Plan on roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 for a Class A, and 12 to 15 for a tow-behind travel trailer pulled by a truck. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average (often $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon recently), and you'll find the cheapest fill-ups at Costco in Lancaster, Sam's Club in East Lampeter, or the Sheetz stations along Route 283. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile loop through Lancaster County and Hershey, budget around $120 to $180 in fuel. Class B campervan rental Mount Joy options stretch a tank much further if budget is top of mind.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Mount Joy?
For best results, book 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends, Hersheypark events, and the famous Pennsylvania State Farm Show in January. Private parks like Hershey RV & Camping Resort and Elizabethtown/Hershey KOA take direct online reservations. For Pennsylvania state parks (Gifford Pinchot, French Creek, and Pine Grove Furnace are all within 90 minutes), reservations open 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania DCNR system at PennsylvaniaStateParks.reserveamerica.com. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have availability even in peak season, and rates are often 20 to 30 percent lower than Friday-Saturday nights.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Pages/default.aspxWhat are the driving conditions like around Mount Joy?
Driving conditions are very RV-friendly: Mount Joy sits in gently rolling farmland with mostly flat, well-maintained roads. Routes 283, 30, and 230 are the main arteries and handle big rigs easily. Watch for two local quirks: horse-and-buggy traffic on smaller roads through Amish areas (slow down, pass only when fully clear), and a few low covered bridges in Lancaster County (most rentals won't fit, so use your GPS in RV mode). Avoid driving into downtown Lancaster or Philadelphia in a large motorhome during rush hour. For peace of mind, ask your host to send their preferred route, locals know which back roads keep you out of tight spots.

Hershey RV & Camping Resort has heated pools and a Hersheypark shuttle, Elizabethtown/Hershey KOA has cabins and a pool, and Pinch Pond features a fishing lake. Potable water fill stations and dump stations are easy to find at most parks (often free for guests, $10 to $20 for non-guests). If you're boondocking or staying somewhere primitive, the dump at Old Mill Stream Campground is one of the most accessible in the region.

Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and outdoor speakers. Wi-Fi and generators are common on Class A and Class C rigs, and travel trailers usually come with leveling blocks and chocks. Most Mount Joy hosts also include a starter kit (linens, kitchenware, toilet paper, fresh water hose, sewer hose). Confirm specifics on the listing's amenity list before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mount%20Joy%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Mount Joy RV rental?
Popular add-ons make your RV rental in Mount Joy experience smoother: delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location), generator use for boondocking ($5 to $15 per hour or a flat daily fee), bike racks, camp chairs and outdoor mats, propane refills, kitchen kits, and bedding/towel packages. Some hosts offer kayaks or coolers for Susquehanna River trips. Pickup and dropoff are usually flexible (typical windows are 1 to 4 PM pickup, 11 AM dropoff), and many hosts will adjust if you ask politely. Always review the listing's mileage policy and add-on prices before booking so there are no surprises.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mount%20Joy%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) as an authorization hold, so the funds are not withdrawn unless there is an issue at return such as damage, missing items, or an unemptied tank. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup (take photos and videos), follow the dump and refuel instructions, and return the RV on time. The hold is released within a few business days after a smooth dropoff.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in Mount Joy if I'm not at a campground?
You have solid overnight options beyond campgrounds. Many travelers use the Cabela's in Hamburg (about 40 minutes north) and Walmart locations in Elizabethtown and Lancaster, which generally allow one-night RV parking with manager permission, always call ahead. Cracker Barrel in Lancaster also welcomes RVers. Harvest Hosts members can stay overnight at local wineries like Grandview Vineyard right in Mount Joy, a true local insider experience. Street parking and most municipal lots in downtown Mount Joy don't allow overnight RV stays, so plan ahead. For a longer stay, the private parks around Hershey and Elizabethtown are your best bet and only minutes from anywhere you would want to be.
