Campgrounds and RV parks near New Salem, PA

Day trips from New Salem cover a wide range of interests. Gettysburg National Military Park lies roughly 30 miles west, with auto-tour routes, ranger programs, and the Museum and Visitor Center at the heart of the battlefield. Historic downtown York, the Central Market, and the York County History Center are all within a short drive. Outdoor options include Gifford Pinchot State Park to the north for swimming, boating, and hiking, and Codorus State Park to the south for its large lake and mountain-bike trails. The Heritage Rail Trail County Park runs through York County and is popular with cyclists and walkers. For families, Hersheypark is roughly an hour north, and Lancaster County's Amish farms, buggy rides, and farmers' markets add another easy day trip east of New Salem.

Peak RV season in York County runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, when private parks are fully open, pool and splash-pad amenities operate, and campground event calendars fill with themed weekends. Summer is warm and humid, with July highs commonly in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and afternoon thunderstorms possible. Booking two to three months ahead is realistic for summer weekends, and holiday weekends can require reservations further out. Spring and fall offer milder temperatures and lighter crowds. September in particular tends to be one of the drier, clearer months in the region, and it aligns with harvest festivals across York and Lancaster counties. October brings foliage across the ridges of the Appalachian foothills. Winter operations are limited. Many private campgrounds in the area close from late October through late March or April, and Pennsylvania state park campgrounds run reduced or fully closed schedules. Travellers planning off-season trips should confirm each park's dates directly before booking.

Campgrounds in the New Salem area sit in gently rolling terrain, mostly on former or working farmland, with a mix of shaded and open sites. Full hookups with water, electric, and sewer are common at private parks, and many offer a pool, playground, camp store, and weekend activities aimed at families. Cell coverage from major carriers is generally reliable across York County, and grocery stores, propane, and RV supply shops are easy to reach in York, Hanover, or Red Lion. Roads in the immediate area include some narrow, winding rural sections, so larger rigs should plan routes toward US 30 or I-83 where possible. Expect biting insects in summer, especially near ponds and wooded sections. Fire rings are standard, but firewood transport rules apply: buy locally to help slow the spread of invasive pests such as spotted lanternfly and emerald ash borer.
