Campgrounds and RV parks near Newville, PA

Hiking is the dominant draw. Colonel Denning State Park sits at the base of the Flat Rock Trail, a climb up Blue Mountain to a rocky overlook, and the park surrounds a 3.5-acre lake for swimming and non-powered boating. Pine Grove Furnace State Park offers the Pole Steeple overlook, two mountain lakes at Laurel and Fuller, and the Appalachian Trail Museum at the trail's traditional halfway point. Anglers can fish Big Spring Creek in Newville or the Yellow Breeches trout stream near Carlisle. Cyclists ride the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail, a crushed-limestone rail-to-trail route running roughly 13 miles between Newville and Shippensburg. Gettysburg battlefields, Hersheypark, and downtown Carlisle are each within about an hour by car.

The state park campgrounds run on a defined season. Colonel Denning opens on the opening day of Pennsylvania trout season in early spring and closes the day after rifle deer season in December, with 49 tent and trailer sites available during that window. Pine Grove Furnace State Park offers 70 tent and trailer sites from late March to mid-December, with electric hookups at most sites and no water hookups at individual pads. Summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the busiest, especially at the state parks and at family-oriented private parks like Dogwood Acres Campground, Inc. and Paradise Stream Family Campground. Fall brings cool nights, foliage along the ridges, and lighter crowds after Labor Day, though hunting seasons overlap with late-fall camping in state forest areas. Winter is quiet. Western Village RV Park Inc caters to RVers passing through on I-81, while the state park campgrounds are closed and private parks scale back amenities such as pools and stores. Travelers should verify current status at Colonel Denning, as bridge rehabilitation work has affected campground availability in recent seasons.

Sites near Newville skew toward wooded, level pads with picnic tables and fire rings. State park sites at Colonel Denning and Pine Grove Furnace include modern restrooms with warm showers and a sanitary dump station, though hookups are limited to electric at select sites, with no water or sewer at individual pads. Cell service is generally not available inside Michaux State Forest, including Pine Grove Furnace, and Wi-Fi is offered seasonally at the General Store. Private parks offer more infrastructure. Dogwood Acres Campground, Inc. and Western Village RV Park Inc have full-hookup sites and accommodate larger rigs. Pets are permitted on designated sites at the state parks and are welcome at the private parks, typically on leash. Firewood is sold on site at both state parks; do not bring outside firewood.
