Camping near Northumberland, Pennsylvania
Northumberland sits at the confluence of the West Branch and North Branch of the Susquehanna River in central Pennsylvania, giving RV travelers direct river access and a compact base for exploring the Susquehanna River Valley. The borough is a short drive from Sunbury, Selinsgrove, Lewisburg, and Danville, and puts several full-service campgrounds within a few miles of town.
Fantasy Island Campground is located on Packer Island along the Susquehanna River between Northumberland and Sunbury, opens April 15, and closes October 15 each year. Splash Magic RV Resort sits at 213 Aspen Lane just off US-11, along the Susquehanna River near Shikellamy State Park and a short drive from Riverside, Winfield, Sunbury, and Selinsgrove.
Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort and the Jellystone Park at Milton add family-focused options within the region, while Steel Steeds Motorcycle Campground serves riders touring the ridge-and-valley roads. Together these properties cover full-hookup RV camping, cabins, and tent sites suitable for weekend and long-weekend trips.
Things to do around Northumberland
Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg is the area's marquee day trip. It is America's largest free-admission amusement park, runs award-winning wooden coasters including the Phoenix and the Twister and a large pool complex, typically operates from late April through October, and sits about a 20-minute drive from Northumberland.
Shikellamy State Park Overlook, about 15 miles away in Sunbury, provides panoramic views of the Susquehanna River confluence and is a solid picnic stop. The park's marina, across the river from town, offers boat and paddle access on the West Branch. Ricketts Glen State Park is about an hour north, where 22 named waterfalls along the Falls Trail make one of the most scenic hikes in Pennsylvania; plan a half-day minimum as the trail is moderate to strenuous with stone steps and creek crossings.

The camping season in the Susquehanna Valley is essentially mid-April through mid-October, matching the operating windows of most local parks. Fantasy Island Campground opens on April 15 and closes on October 15 each year. Splash Magic operates its water park attractions during the warm months and shifts to a quieter, long-term-friendly mode in the shoulder season.
Summer is peak. Daytime highs sit in the upper 70s to mid-80s with warm evenings, Knoebels runs its full ride schedule, and weekend sites book quickly, especially around holidays, so reserve several weeks ahead. Independence Day and Labor Day weekends typically fill first.
Fall brings foliage along the river ridges from late September into mid-October and cooler nights well suited to campfires. Winter camping is limited in the immediate area; most private campgrounds close, and travelers looking to stay through the cold months should confirm off-season availability directly with the property.

How to book an RV site near Northumberland
Private campgrounds in the Northumberland area take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Fantasy Island Campground, Splash Magic RV Resort, and the two Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort locations all publish live availability online, and weekend inventory in July and August moves fastest. Fantasy Island enforces a two-night minimum on weekends and a three-night minimum on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
For summer holiday weekends, book several weeks out for a specific site type, longer if a pull-through 50-amp site or riverside spot is required. Steel Steeds Motorcycle Campground is event-driven; check the schedule before planning a stay, since rally weekends sell out.
Pennsylvania state parks in the region (Shikellamy is day-use only) use the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation system for parks that offer camping, with most sites reservable up to 11 months in advance, released at noon Eastern.
What to expect on the ground
Fantasy Island has approximately 100 sites, all with water, electric, and sewer hookups, a poured concrete patio at each site, 30- or 50-amp service, plus cable TV. Splash Magic offers full-hookup RV sites in both pull-through and back-in configurations, tent sites, and 41 fully furnished cabins.
Amenity levels lean family: Splash Magic is built around a water park with two water slides, a splash park, a family swimming pool, an adult-only pool, and an in-ground hot tub, plus miniature golf, bumper boats, paddle boats, a large playground, a game room, and a restaurant and snack bar.
Cell coverage along the river corridor is generally reliable on major carriers. Grocery, fuel, and RV supply runs are handled in Sunbury, Selinsgrove, or Lewisburg, all within a 15- to 20-minute drive.

dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/RickettsGlenStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Northumberland, PA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to where to park an RV in Northumberland. Top picks include Splash Magic Campground at 213 Aspen Lane, right in Northumberland along the Susquehanna with a water park, full hookups, and riverfront sites; Knoebels Campground in Elysburg (20 minutes) for amusement park access; Williamsport South / Nittany Mountain KOA in New Columbia for clean, full-hookup sites; and Hidden Valley Campground in Mifflinville (30 minutes) for a quieter wooded vibe. Shikellamy State Park is great for day use and river views. All four campgrounds welcome motorhomes and travel trailers. Book early for July and August, those weekends fill up fast along the river.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time to plan an RV trip from Northumberland, PA?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time for a Northumberland RV trip. May brings blooming dogwoods and highs around 70°F, June through August averages 80 to 85°F (perfect for swimming in the Susquehanna), and September to mid-October offers stunning fall foliage with crisp 60 to 70°F days, this is the local insider favorite. Winters get cold (lows in the 20s with occasional snow), but adventurous renters can still find winterized RVs for hunting season or holiday trips. Shoulder seasons (May and September) typically have lower rates and fewer crowds at popular spots like Knoebels and Ricketts Glen. Pro tip: book a fall foliage week in early October for jaw-dropping color along Route 147.
weather.gov/ctp/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in Northumberland, PA?
You'll be in great shape. Northumberland is one of the easier places in Pennsylvania for first time renting an RV: the main routes (US-11, US-15, and PA-147) are wide, flat, and follow the Susquehanna River with gentle curves rather than steep mountain grades. Every RVezy host gives a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, slide-outs, leveling, tanks, and driving tips, so you won't leave until you feel ready. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup at your campground, which removes driving from the equation entirely. Start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Northumberland if you're nervous. Within an hour of driving, most first-timers feel completely comfortable.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Northumberland trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every motorhome rental in Northumberland booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on I-80, near Knoebels, or deep in Ricketts Glen State Park. Roadside service handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. The RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip to coordinate repairs and communicate with your host. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave and snap a quick photo of the VIN at pickup so you can get rolling again fast if anything happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Northumberland RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is allowed and popular from Northumberland. You're within easy reach of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and West Virginia. Many guests do classic loops like Northumberland to the Finger Lakes (around 180 miles) or down to Assateague Island (around 240 miles). Cross-border trips to Canada (think Niagara Falls or Toronto) may be allowed depending on the host's insurance coverage, so message the host directly from the listing page before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. Bring your passport for any Canada-bound trip and share your full itinerary with the host upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat is the fuel budget for an RV trip from Northumberland, PA?
Plan smart and fuel won't break the bank. Pennsylvania gas prices typically hover around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches run 6 to 10 MPG. For a 300-mile weekend loop (say, Northumberland to Ricketts Glen and back), budget $100 to $150 for fuel in a Class C. Travel trailers towed by your own truck stretch your dollar further. Pro tip: fill up at Sheetz or Rutter's in Sunbury or Selinsgrove before heading north into the mountains, prices climb in smaller towns like Benton and Dushore.
energy.gov/eere/vehicles/fuel-economyHow far in advance should I book a campground near Northumberland?
For peak summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book Pennsylvania campgrounds 2 to 4 weeks ahead, and 2 to 3 months out for holiday weekends like July 4th. Pennsylvania State Parks like Shikellamy and Ricketts Glen take reservations through the official DCNR system up to 11 months in advance. Private parks like Splash Magic Campground and Knoebels Campground book directly through their own websites. Off-season (October through April) you can often roll in same-day, especially on weekdays. Pro tip: lock in your campground first, then book your RV rental in Northumberland so you can match the RV size to the site length and hookup type.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhat are the driving conditions like around Northumberland, PA?
Driving an RV around Northumberland is refreshingly chill compared to most of the Northeast. US-11 and US-15 are four-lane highways that hug the Susquehanna River with gentle curves, no steep mountain passes near town. PA-147 north toward Williamsport is two-lane but smooth and RV-friendly. I-80 is just 15 minutes away for east-west travel. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (especially November rut season), occasional flooding on river-adjacent roads in spring, and snow squalls from December to February. Avoid narrow Route 642 east through Montandon if you're in a Class A. Pro tip: download offline maps before heading into the Endless Mountains, cell service drops off north of Danville.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Northumberland, PA?
Campgrounds near Northumberland punch well above their weight. Splash Magic offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric), a water park, laundry, camp store, and Wi-Fi. Knoebels Campground has water and electric sites with a dump station on-site and walking access to free amusement park rides. For dump stations and fresh water on the road, Shikellamy State Park Marina and most Sheetz locations along US-11 have RV-friendly options. Most sites in the region run 30-amp, but 50-amp pull-throughs are widely available at private parks. Pro tip: confirm hookup amperage before booking so your AC has the juice it needs in July.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/ShikellamyStatePark/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat features and amenities come with an RV rental in Northumberland, PA?
Most RVs on RVezy in Northumberland are loaded with comforts of home: a real bed (often a queen), full kitchen with stove, fridge, and microwave, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace heat, and dinette seating. Larger Class C and Class A motorhomes typically include a TV, sometimes Wi-Fi or a cell booster, and a generator for off-grid trips to spots like Ricketts Glen. Seatbelts for travel are listed on every page, important for family RV trip Northumberland planning. Check the listing's amenities section for specifics like outdoor speakers, bike racks, or solar panels. Pro tip: message your host if you need a specific feature like a CPAP outlet or kid-friendly bunk setup.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available when I rent an RV in Northumberland, PA?
RVezy hosts in Northumberland offer plenty of helpful add-ons to customize your trip: linen and bedding packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor mats, bike racks, generators, kayaks, and even pre-stocked propane tanks. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Northumberland, Sunbury, Shamokin Dam, or Lewisburg, with delivery available to most campgrounds within 30 to 60 miles. Mileage policies vary, common setups include 100 free miles per night or unlimited mileage on weekly bookings. All add-ons, mileage caps, and delivery fees show up clearly during checkout before you pay. Pro tip: add the linen package on your first rental, well worth it.
visitpa.com/things-to-do/outdoor-recreation/rv-campingHow do payment and the security deposit work for RV rentals in Northumberland?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card when you book, no cash is handed to the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from your booking payment a few days before pickup and released after a smooth return. The deposit covers issues like missing items or excessive cleaning, not normal wear and tear. To keep things easy, take time-stamped photos and a short video of the RV inside and out at both pickup and drop-off, top off fuel and propane before returning, and empty the tanks at a dump station. Easy in, easy out, and your deposit comes right back.
