Camping near Oakland, Pennsylvania
Oakland is a small borough in Susquehanna County in northeastern Pennsylvania, sitting near the New York border in the Endless Mountains region. The area is rural and heavily wooded, with rolling hills, creeks, and a network of small lakes that shape most of the local camping options. RV travelers use it as a quiet base between Binghamton, NY and Scranton, PA.
Private campgrounds dominate the immediate area. Pine Crest Campground, Lakeside Campground, Guestward Ho Family Campground, Shady Rest Campground, and Kellystone Park Campsite are the closest options and cover the range from full-hookup RV sites to more rustic tent and cabin setups. Most operate as seasonal parks tied to the warm-weather months.
For public land, the 405-acre Salt Springs State Park sits roughly seven miles north of Montrose in Susquehanna County, with old-growth hemlocks estimated to be over 300 years old and a rocky gorge cut by Fall Brook with three waterfalls. It is the main state-park anchor within easy driving distance of Oakland.
Things to do around Oakland
Water is the main draw. The Susquehanna River runs through the area for paddling and smallmouth bass fishing, and the surrounding lakes and ponds support swimming, kayaking, and shoreline fishing from most private campgrounds.
Hiking is centered on Salt Springs State Park, where trails lead through meadows and marshes, in and out of a gorge, into an old-growth hemlock forest, and up and down the hills. The gorge waterfalls on Fall Brook are the signature short hike and work well for families.
Off-site, day trips reach Elk Mountain for skiing and mountain biking, the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, and Binghamton for zoos, museums, and restaurants. Fall foliage drives on the back roads of Susquehanna County are a common weekend activity.

The camping season in this part of Pennsylvania is shaped by a cold, snowy winter and a short, humid summer. Montrose, the closest weather-reporting town, has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, and average temperatures range from the upper 30s in winter to the lower 80s in summer. Most private campgrounds open in mid to late spring and close by mid to late October.
Summer, especially July and early August, is the peak booking window. Weekends at family-oriented parks such as Pine Crest Campground, Lakeside Campground, and Guestward Ho Family Campground fill weeks in advance around July 4 and Labor Day. Weekday sites are usually easier to secure.
Spring and fall are quieter but wetter and colder. Snowfall usually begins in late October or early November and continues into April or May, and Montrose averages about 79 inches of snow per year. Winter RV camping is limited; most local parks are closed and roads to remote sites can be icy.
How to book near Oakland
Private campgrounds near Oakland handle their own reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Pine Crest Campground, Lakeside Campground, Guestward Ho Family Campground, Shady Rest Campground, and Kellystone Park Campsite typically open reservations for the coming season in late winter or early spring, and holiday weekends should be booked as early as possible.
For state-run camping, the systems differ. Salt Springs State Park has 14 rustic campsites, some walk-in and others drive-up, plus three rustic cabins with electricity but no heat or running water. Reservations for overnight accommodations at Salt Springs may be made in advance by calling the Friends of Salt Springs Park at 570-967-7275, and are confirmed when full payment is received. Larger Pennsylvania state park campgrounds elsewhere in the region use the state's online reservation system and open bookings up to eleven months in advance.
What to expect near Oakland
Expect a rural, quiet setting. Cell coverage is patchy in the hills and hollows of Susquehanna County, and the Pennsylvania DCNR itself notes that cell service is unpredictable in and around many state parks and asks visitors to download the park map before arrival. Download maps and directions before leaving the highway.
Site types vary widely. Private parks near Oakland typically offer a mix of full-hookup RV sites, water-and-electric sites, and tent areas, with playgrounds, pools, and camp stores at the larger ones. State-park camping at Salt Springs is rustic, with no hookups and grassy sites accessed on foot or by short drive-up.
Bring layers even in summer, as nights in the Endless Mountains cool off quickly. Insect repellent is useful from late May through August, and bear-aware food storage is standard practice throughout the area.

Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the nightly rate on an RV rental Pennsylvania trip, so plan smart. Expect 8 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, 18 to 22 mpg for Class B campervans, and 12 to 16 mpg for trucks pulling travel trailers. Pennsylvania has some of the highest gas taxes in the country, so gas around Oakland typically runs higher than the national average. A useful rule of thumb: budget 1.5 to 2 times your daily driving miles divided by your mpg, times current price per gallon. Pro tip: fill up just across the border in New York where fuel is often cheaper, especially diesel.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oakland, PA?

For shoulder season (May or late September), 2 to 3 weeks is usually plenty. Midweek arrivals (Sunday through Thursday) are easier to book and often discounted. Reserve the RV first on RVezy, then the campsite, so you know the rig length you are working with.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are road and driving conditions like around Oakland, PA?

You've got easy access to I-81 (the main north-south artery) and US Route 11, both wide, well-maintained, and RV-comfortable. Winter brings real snow and ice from November through March, so most renters stick to the April-October window. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, especially in fall (rut season). Avoid narrow township roads if you're in a larger Class A, GPS routes built for cars sometimes pick them. Stick to numbered state routes.
