Camping near Olyphant, Pennsylvania
Olyphant sits in the Lackawanna Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania, a short drive from Scranton and within reach of the Endless Mountains and the western edge of the Pocono region. RV renters use the town as a practical base: Interstate 81 runs just west of the borough, and most nearby campgrounds sit within a 30-minute drive off exits 194, 199, or 211.
The closest full-service public option is Lackawanna State Park, a 1,445-acre park in northeastern Pennsylvania ten miles north of Scranton, built around the 198-acre Lackawanna Lake. Private options in the surrounding townships include Highland Campgrounds, Shady Rest Campground, and Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort. Benton Hills Mobile Home Park serves longer-term stays.
Most sites in the area are wooded and rolling rather than flat. Renters bringing larger rigs should confirm site length and levelness before booking, particularly at private parks in the hills east and north of town.
Things to do around Olyphant
Lackawanna Lake anchors most day plans. The 198-acre lake is surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest, and boating, camping, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming are popular activities at Lackawanna State Park.
Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort adds a private lake with paddle sports, a swimming beach, and a scheduled activity program through summer. Shady Rest Campground sits near Elk Mountain Ski Resort, which extends the season into winter for families who want to combine camping with skiing.
In Scranton itself, Steamtown National Historic Site preserves the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western rail yards with restored locomotives and seasonal excursion rides, an easy rainy-day option.

Camping season in the Olyphant area is short. Most campgrounds in the Scranton area operate from mid-April through mid-October, with limited winter options. The season at Lackawanna State Park runs from the second Friday in April through the third Sunday in October, though the day-use park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset. Highland Campgrounds runs a similar late-spring through mid-October season.
July and August are the peak booking months. Booking ahead is recommended, especially during peak season from Memorial Day to Labor Day, rather than relying on walk-up availability. September brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and generally settled weather; early October adds fall color across the Endless Mountains before parks close for the season.
Winter camping is possible at a few private operators. Shady Rest Campground offers year-round sites and markets itself as a base for skiers heading to Elk Mountain, but state-park loops are closed and services around them are limited.
How to book Olyphant campgrounds
Lackawanna State Park is reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks system operated by DCNR. Reservations for day use and overnight facilities can be made online or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Pennsylvania opens reservations 11 months in advance at 12:00 PM Eastern Time, which is an unusual noon release time among state park systems, and popular summer weekends clear out at the front of that window.
Private parks each use their own systems. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort books through its own website; Highland Campgrounds and Shady Rest Campground take reservations directly by phone or website. For any RV rental, confirm rig length, hookup amperage, and pet policy at time of booking, since site specs vary widely between loops.
What to expect on site
Sites in this part of Pennsylvania are typically wooded and sloped. At Lackawanna State Park, some sites are noted by campers as not perfectly level, and the main camping loops offer varying degrees of privacy between neighbors. Modern restrooms with showers and flush toilets are provided, and a sanitary dump station sits near the campground entrance.
Quiet hours are typically from 9 PM to 8 AM, alcoholic beverages are prohibited, and pets are allowed in designated areas but must be kept on a leash and supervised.
Bringing firewood into Pennsylvania is prohibited and could result in a citation due to spotted lanternfly and other pest quarantines. Buy firewood locally, and burn any remaining wood before departure. Beginning in 2027, the campground at Lackawanna State Park is undergoing a major shower house renovation project, during which portions of the campground will be temporarily closed in phases and impacted sites are blocked for reservations.

How much does an RV rental in Olyphant cost, and how can I save?
An RV rental in Olyphant is one of the more budget-friendly ways to explore northeastern Pennsylvania. Travel trailers near Scranton typically run around $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250, and larger Class A rigs land between $225 and $400. To find a cheap RV rental in Olyphant, aim for midweek pickups, book early for fall foliage season (mid-September through October), and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Filtering by Instant Book and pet-friendly options can also surface flexible listings. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Olyphant,%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Olyphant, PA?
Good news: a regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Olyphant for nearly every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Pennsylvania only requires a non-commercial Class B license if the single vehicle exceeds 26,001 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and a non-commercial Class A if you're towing a trailer over 10,000 pounds, situations that almost never apply to standard rentals. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license. Most first-time renters in Scranton are surprised how straightforward the licensing is.
pa.gov/agencies/dmv/driver-services/licenses-and-photo-ids/license-types-restrictionsWhat protection is included with my Olyphant RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Olyphant comes with an RVezy renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one phone call away whether you're parked at Lackawanna State Park or driving the Pocono Mountains. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle during your trip, providing real financial peace of mind (note: it's a protection plan, not traditional insurance). During booking, you choose the level of coverage that fits your trip, hosts don't set this for you. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around photo tour with your host at pickup so any prior dings are documented before you roll out.

Booking is low-risk. Refund eligibility depends on factors like how far out from your trip start date you cancel. Hosts don't set their own cancellation rules, RVezy handles this directly. Pro tip: book early for Pocono fall foliage weekends since they sell out fast, and you'll still have your grace period to finalize plans.

Just use the Delivery filter when searching and enter your destination address to see delivery-ready listings. Delivery fees usually depend on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: if it's your first time renting an RV, choosing delivery to a hookup site at Lackawanna State Park means you skip the driving learning curve and start your trip relaxed.

pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-park/stayWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Olyphant?

September and early October bring world-class fall foliage across the Lackawanna and Pocono region, plus crisp 60 to 70 degree days that are perfect for hiking. Spring (April to early May) is quieter and great for fishing, though nights can still dip near freezing. Winters get cold (lows in the 20s with regular snow), and Lackawanna State Park's campground closes mid-October. Pro tip: book a foliage-season RV rental in Pennsylvania at least two months ahead, the leaf-peeping weekends are the most coveted of the year.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-parkI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Olyphant?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV is something many Olyphant-area guests do every year, and every RVezy host gives you a thorough walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, propane, and dumping tanks. Olyphant's roads are calm and the local highways (I-81, I-84, I-380) are wide, well-marked, and easy to navigate compared to bigger metros. Start with a Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Olyphant for the easiest driving experience, both handle like an oversized van. Pro tip: many hosts offer delivery so your very first miles behind the wheel are after your trip starts, not on day one.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never alone out there. Every Olyphant RV rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, covering flats, jump-starts, lockouts, and towing if needed, whether you're on I-81 outside Scranton or deep in the Poconos. RVezy's customer support team is also reachable before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Your host is typically just a message away too and can troubleshoot quirks specific to their RV (like a sticky awning or finicky water pump). Pro tip: save the RVezy roadside number in your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN plate so you have it handy if you ever need to call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trip routes from Olyphant?
Olyphant is a launchpad for some incredible drives. Top RV road trip from Olyphant ideas include: the Pocono Mountains loop (45 minutes south, lakes, waterfalls, and ski-town vibes), the Finger Lakes in New York (about 3 hours northwest for wineries and lakeside camping), the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (1 hour south for riverside campgrounds), Niagara Falls (4.5 hours west via I-81), and Hudson Valley adventures (about 2.5 hours east). Cross-border trips into New York State are fine on RVezy rentals, but travel into Canada depends on host approval and travel into Mexico is not permitted. Pro tip: ask your host about one-way options if you're dreaming of a Scranton-to-Adirondacks itinerary.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what's gas like in Pennsylvania?
Budgeting fuel is easier than you think. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 7 to 10 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices typically sit a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes. There's a Sheetz, Wawa, and several truck stops with diesel just off I-81 near Olyphant for easy fill-ups. Pro tip: for a 3-night RV camping Olyphant getaway to Lackawanna State Park (about 30 miles round trip), even a thirsty Class A will only burn around $30 to $40 in fuel.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Olyphant?
Plan ahead and you'll get your pick of the best spots. pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around Olyphant?
Olyphant is one of the friendlier places in the Northeast to drive an RV. The town sits in the Lackawanna Valley with easy access to I-81, I-84, and I-380, all wide interstates with manageable grades and clear signage. You'll encounter rolling Appalachian terrain (expect some downhill grades coming out of the Poconos, so use lower gears) and occasional winter snow from November through March. Avoid narrow downtown Scranton streets in larger rigs and watch height clearances on older bridges along Route 6. Summer thunderstorms can be sudden, so check the National Weather Service Binghamton office forecast before you roll. Pro tip: fuel up before climbing into the Poconos, fewer big-rig-friendly stations exist once you're up on the plateau.

Most Pennsylvania state parks have fire rings, picnic tables, and pet-friendly loops at designated sites. Quiet hours are 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot water hose and both a 30-amp and 50-amp adapter so you're ready for any site, your host can usually loan these if you ask.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-park/stayWhat's included inside the RV itself?
You'll feel right at home. Most Olyphant RV rentals come fully equipped with sleeping for 4 to 8 (queen beds, bunks, convertible dinettes), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (air conditioning and furnace), and seatbelted travel seating. Many motorhome rental Olyphant listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and onboard generator for boondocking, and some campervan rental Olyphant options add solar panels and Wi-Fi hotspots. Linens and kitchen kits are often available as add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host if you need something specific like a coffee maker, high chair, or outdoor grill, most hosts are happy to include extras.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for an Olyphant RV rental?
Customizing your trip is easy. Popular add-ons from Olyphant hosts include linen and towel kits ($25 to $75), kitchen packages, outdoor camp chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees if you're traveling with a furry friend. Pickup is typically at the host's home in the Scranton/Olyphant area between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., with dropoff in the morning, the listing shows exact times. Mileage policies vary, with daily allowances usually 100 to 150 free miles and unlimited options available on select listings. Pro tip: bundling delivery plus a linen kit when you rent an RV in Olyphant means you arrive at Lackawanna State Park to a fully made-up bed, just walk in and relax.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-parkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Olyphant on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV type) and released after your trip ends, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition it left. Add-on fees like extra mileage or late returns are charged separately if applicable. Pro tip: do a thorough photo walk-around with your host at both pickup and dropoff, this is the single best way to ensure your full deposit comes back quickly and avoids surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Olyphant during winter?
Yes, and a winter RV rental Pennsylvania trip can be magical. Many Olyphant hosts list winter-ready RVs with heated holding tanks, insulated underbellies, and propane furnaces designed for the region's cold (January lows average around 20°F with regular snow). Most Pennsylvania state park campgrounds, including Lackawanna, close in mid-October, but private parks like Keen Lake and full-hookup options near the Pocono ski areas (Camelback, Jack Frost, Big Boulder) stay open year-round and let you use shore power to keep things toasty. Filter for winterized listings and message the host to confirm cold-weather readiness. Pro tip: pair a winter RV rental with a Pocono ski weekend, you'll have a warm basecamp at the mountain for a fraction of a slopeside lodge.
